Possibly my spiciest take is that it's actually good to have people you respect and like that have some dogshit takes.
I think part of what is making young people lonelier, in discussing why they're increasingly isolated, is that they're so afraid of meeting someone who doesn't hold their same beliefs, and instead of being just core beliefs it is kinda ancillary shit.
It's actually okay to disagree even on social topics! Even on some political ones! But I mean, online you can start with "i love this mutual but they have a really bad/uninformed opinion about x media"
I know this is IMMEDIATELY going to be taken in bad faith, and yes babygirl, you are so right, I DO want you to go make best friends with both the KKK grand wizard AND your nearest nazi leader.
But seriously, as someone who has spent two decades doing community organization: finding ways to connect with different people is so so so important. There are people i follow here who ate 80% smart and their brain falls out of their head 20% of the time and that is GOOD FOR MY MENTAL ECOSYSTEM AND GOOD FOR LEARNING HOW TO BE A PERSON
LET'S ALL GO PISS ON THE POOR
It’s also good to assume you probably are the friend whose brain falls out 20% of the time.
We all have blind spots, assumptions, and dogshit take from time to time. They can’t all be winners.
Remember its not just one person or friend, all of us have dog shit takes once awhile and its how we learn. People are so terrified of making mistakes theyre literally isolating the fuck out of themselves and being more miserable than if they just made the mistake once in awhile.
Also like.. having shit takes about something does not necessarily mean they can't have good takes on other things. I work at a cat rescue with a bunch of little old Catholic ladies and several of them are Trump supporters. They don't agree with a lot of what he says and does, but they are single issue voters. They vote against abortion. Period. End of information. And that is.... Not my opinion for sure! But they are not bad people because they have dogshit political takes.
They buy us presents for our birthdays and for Christmas (we are Jewish but it's still a nice gesture). They genuinely care about our lives (and our cat). They know full well we disagree politically and they really don't care. And they are so dedicated to cat rescue work! All of these old Catholic women with some of the worst political takes imaginable, have gone to insane lengths for cats. And they are legit the best rescue I have worked with. They care so much about all cats everywhere. They gave free cat blankets (that we were originally going to sell to raise money for the rescue) to another cat rescue because they had kittens coming and they needed them.
Their policies on adoption are truly some of the most kind and compassionate ones I have seen. Sometimes cats literally just hate something about a certain house, too much traffic, too many smells, whatever. Sometimes it just doesn't work for the cat and that is in no way the person's fault but SO MANY RESCUES punish you for giving a cat back and refuse to adopt to you ever again! The rule is in place for people who do this multiple times for no good reason, but the rescues often apply the policy regardless of circumstances. Our rescue lets you return a cat back to us and get another one and they use reasonable judgement to determine if the person is causing the issue.
Anyway, before this turns into a longer rant about cat rescues I have worked with, humans are complex and multifaceted and sometimes people are just going to believe utter garbage. But that does not mean you can't get something positive for yourself (and for the cat population of your local area) out of being their friend and spending time with them. Moral purity is impossible and everyone in the world is wrong about something. Go make friends with people who don't believe everything you believe.
Yeeessss love everything about this 👏💖
