i’ve seen a couple of posts lately describing “how to learn a new language” in the general with general steps but it’s worth noting that the journey for learning each language is going to be different. for example, for a lot of languages the first thing you should learn is the writing system, but for japanese or chinese you can’t just learn every character before learning a bunch of vocab, grammar, etc. and i’m sure other languages have other quirks that don’t fit into a generalized study plan.  these plans are a good way to figure out where to start but don’t feel like you need to follow such a plan rigidly to learn the language you want to or you’ll probably get frustrated.  seeing how others have learned the language you’re studying is a good way to know where to start or what things to avoid(like multilingual resources like duolingo that are great for some languages but awful for others)

ちょっと詰まらなそうだが、聴力が超下手だからこの手順をしてみたい

もしかして、慣れるようにこの手順前にNHK Easyで動画をみる方がいいかも

A few days back, I asked for some recommendations on story podcasts to listen to in Japanese. I posted this question on both Tumblr and the subreddit r/LearnJapanese so now I’ll share my results.

A scary story podcast from JapanesePod101

Satori Reader (paid subscription, or limited free use)

A YouTube channel that includes stories (often folktales) for Japanese learners

Many people upload stories read aloud to YouTube, which can be found by searching up 朗読 

Let’s Talk in Japanese! A podcast done by a Japanese teacher, each episode is categorized with N#

Similarly, JLPT Stories is also categorized with N#

And lastly, the ever popular Nihongo Con Teppei

I just learnt about Ytalki, a site where you can get book recommendations in your target language, and they’re divided by proficiency levels! And if you know any good books (especially in languages other than, sigh, English) you can look them up and rate them by difficulty level, so that they’ll be added to the list.

今はほとんど読みながら知らない言葉をフラッシュカードにする勉強しています。そして、今年にはポッドキャスト聞きたり文法教科書よんだりしようとします。8年ぐらい勉強しているけど、五月雨式なのだからあまり上手ではありません。

i’m alive. i haven’t really studied since failing the N2 a couple of years ago, but i’m back trying to study

current plan:

-go through KKLC starting from the beginning since i forgot so many kanji.  for characters i recognize but couldn’t write off the top of my head i’m adding a bunch of vocab using it to an anki deck.  once i hit kanji i really don’t know i’ll take it more slowly adding new vocab and writing it out

-read more.  trying to read at least a couple of pages a day. my vocabulary has always been a weak point so i’m doing a lot of looking words up and adding them to a second anki deck but i think after a couple of books this should slow down.

-on top of reading books, trying to read at least one news story a day, or a few if it’s on easynews

-writing every kanji answer to my anki cards and redoing them if i get the kanji wrong

-grammar review first using tobira, then moving back to using shin kanzen and sou matome for n2

-write on langcorrect at least once or twice a week, about things that are actually on my mind and not random easy topics. add new vocab needed for entry to anki
