Both Metal and Araya's social anxieties come from being picked on and bullied by other kids. Metal for his looks and speech, and Araya for his fascination with puppets and his quiet nature. However, their anxieties also stem from the men they idolize. Metal has an intense need to be like Rock Lee and Might Guy, so he's afraid of scruing up in that sense, and Araya idolizes both Akasuna no Sasori, and Kankurou. So he is also afraid of screwing up, and bringing shame to the puppet master jutsu.
