Okay here are my thoughts on the film, copy pasted from my WhatsApp chat with my friend (who has not read the book, for context), put in bulleted format:

Okay so I’m a big big fan of the score and the lighting in particular

The score was (for me) a primary factor in maintaining the almost melancholy vibe of the narrative (it’s a very hopeless situation and all) and I thought it did an astounding job of that. That’s one of the main things I care about with adaptations (themes and general vibe MUST be the same). Daniel Pemberton is my goat

Same goes for sound design. Very immersive. I enjoy the use of silence.

Lighting, cinematography, and VFX was wonderful for getting across the wonder of space (while I was reading the book, I found myself jealous of astronauts because they get to see the sun shining on the earth from up there. I imagine it would be so beautiful I would cry and throw up.) I am glad they replicated that feeling!!

Suspicious that NASA’s logo was all over everything.. I saw the US department of defense in the credits, that’s probably why. But that was an international mission, and the EVA suit was Russian, so NASA’s logo would NOT be on it lol

Pacing was much faster than the book, but that’s to be expected. It didn’t take too much away, but certain parts made more sense/were better explained in the book (everything is VERY well explained in the book btw. Very scientific)

Some minor plot differences, but themes and feelings were the same! I like it, fire movie

Dude you’ve gotta read the book, Stratt is hilarious in the book

Oh yeah also I feel like the general theme of connection/isolation were a bit more present in the book than in the film. Definitely kind of subtle but still an important part. But I think that’s also a matter of things moving so much faster in the film

At some point I want to line up the memories and the scenes they were adjacent to and see what I can find because there is ABSOLITELU a significant connection (but I read the book in two days and didn’t take notes so I will come back I guess)

I actually freak so heavy with Project Hail Mary though you have no idea

I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.

Eva Stratt does NOT need a redemption arc. Eva Stratt did EVERYTHING WRONG so that no-one else would have to. Her hands are permanently stained with blood so humanity gets to keep on living.
