we all know and love dog coded characters but what about their cousin, falcon coded characters. characters whose loyalty is fierce, but more distant, less physically affectionate, an unspoken but mutually understood bond. whose devotion to you is a language that only the two of you understand. whose fearsome appearance never lets you forget the privilege you hold in having earned that devotion. who require careful handling and patience to bond with, so you don't slip and cut yourself on their sharp edges. whose trust is given after you place yours in them, not before. whose dependence on you is less apparent but no less real. whose power is only equal to their fragility. who can easily leave your side, but will always return when you hold out your hand and call them home.

Sometimes the vibe on conversations about fandom discord servers seems to imply that fans think fandom discord servers are intended to be neutral spaces where any fandom conversation can occur? Which then does make it terribly unfair if they ban X or Y topic.

But in my own experience, most of them are slapped together by 1–3 people and then they get moderated in line with what those people find comfortable to discuss, even if their membership gets huge later. It feels more like a precarious group project than like big serious infrastructure for fandom conversations.

People are no longer used to spaces having specific owners who socially interact with you and who have personal tastes and boundaries that define the space.

We're used to moderators sucking, but in that corporate, Dear Facebook, please stop underpaying and traumatizing your content moderator staff way.

Discord servers are like LJ coms or mailing lists... but most fans don't remember those now.

It’s just like Reddit subs, it’s all down to the mods and admins to decide what discourse and viewpoints are accepted.

Even in the most “open-minded” subs or servers, there’s groupthink and certain viewpoints will be rejected.
