The First Step to Relocation
With the advent of the 21st century relocating has become a more accepted phenomenon than an exception. Globalization has disintegrated the walls of the world and technology and particularly the internet has empowered individuals to act globally. as thomas l friedman said in his book, the world is flat –‘flattening process is happening at warp speed and directly or indirectly touching a lot more people on the planet at once.’ with this fast pace come several challenges, one being that of relocation. For the people emerging from a western world moving to Asia particularly India, presents many daunting challenges that involve cultural changes, social acceptance, socio-economic issues and also the monumental task of shipping to India their belongings. For an individual moving to India, they may be faced with several issues but also the exciting prospect of experiencing a phenomenal country enriched with culture, art and amazing places and people to see meet and enjoy.
Many Indians residing in the United States have recently made the decision to move back to their country of origin, that is move back to India. These individuals also find the return to India a daunting task. They return to India with many doubts, fears and questions. Averaging a stay of 10-15 years in the United States, these individuals are grappling with the task of wanting to return to their roots but expecting the same amenities and facilities and lifestyle they received in the US.
The first issue that they face is that of shipping boxes and furniture to India. A world they have created and a home they have filled with precious memories and items have to be transported across seven seas to another world. It becomes imperative for them to hire the right shipping or relocating company that can assist them with relocation services. It gives an individual peace of mind knowing that the task of shipping boxes to India or even shipping pets to India is smooth and uneventful. They often choose to ship their belongings by sharing a container, shipping by sea or shipping by air. Several items to be shipped also pose concerns. Like shipping a piano or a pet or even an automobile. Making sure these are packed professionally and don’t break in transit or are cleared by customs is a daunting task by itself. It becomes important to hire a full-service professional relocation company that understands the customs and laws of India and can address all these issues easily. Once this is done, moving to India would be the first step to staging an exciting return to India.
In the global economies, investment has increased in technology, systems, processes and training and thus so must the entire process of mobilizing human resources. Shipping to India from USA whether it is an expat moving or an individual’s personal move becomes an integral part of the human resource function today. Hr must help employees deal with cultural challenges and educate them through out the entire process of the move. Several relocation companies are now working integrally with the hr in making this process seamless.

A new place is hard enough but for parents it adds an extra challenge of helping their children cope with the stress of moving. For kids, moving entails not only a change of home but also moving away from their school, their friends and their comfort zone. While there is excitement of being in a new place, the actual adjustment for them may be far more complex. Parents have to deal with many questions and challenges. What should we tell the kids about the move? How would they react? How do we explain the reasons for the move and why it would be good for them? What should they expect in terms of the schooling and making new friends etc?
Moving could affect children socially, mentally and emotionally and often times academically. If a child is older and has been in the same school for several years, the idea of moving can be revolting at first. They would miss their friends, their routine and their way of life. In a new place they would have to go through the regime of making new friends and adjust to the academic structure of a new school. This could create anxiety, emotional stress and trauma in the mind of the children. In such a scenario the role of the parents and the community becomes crucial.
Some of the things parents could do to help children cope with the relocation is:
Talk to the children as soon as the decision to move comes up. Be honest with them and give them enough time to think about the idea of moving and adjust to it. Answer their questions and encourage ideas and thoughts and their gauge their emotions regarding the subject.
Take the help of teachers and school counselors speak to the children. Involve their friends to find ways of keeping in touch. This helps children stay connected with their existing world.
Be positive about moving to a new country, as this not only generates excitement in their mind, it can also help them respect the new culture they are moving to. Identify places that would spark interest in the kids in the new place, like museums, parks or entertainment centers.
After identifying the new school, parents should share web sites or forums with them so they familiarize with the place and set up a positive expectation from it. Children may worry about how they would cope with the new curriculum and how they would perform academically in the new school. Ease their stress by telling them not to worry about that, as everyone will need an adjustment period.
If your kids are into sports or any other extra-curricular activities see if you could identify places where similar activities are available.
Get them involved. Kids are more vested in the move if they are involved in the major aspects and tasks around moving. Let them pack their special things in boxes and identify things they want to keep or give away. Also encourage them to set those things up in their own rooms in the new place.
Give kids ample space and time to say their good byes. Kids cope better if they are given the opportunity to say goodbye to their close friends and teachers. Help them exchange information via email or postal address or even give gifts to their close friends. Encourage a farewell party and invite your close network of friends and relatives so that there is an atmosphere of celebration as you embark on a new journey and not that of a loss.
All kids are different and they would react differently to a new place or a new environment. Being a good role model would help parents help their kids to cope. Patience, open communication and understanding are the key to a successful move. It could take as long as 1-2 years before children adjust or even earlier so parents need to show complete understanding and patience when relocating with kids.

Breaking the Walls of the World
Having lived in the United States for over 11 years, the idea of returning to India was always in the back of my mind. I was born and brought up in Bombay where struggling fordaily survival was integral and time was money. I lived in a typical middle class household with big dreams and big opportunities and an environment where you were short-changed at every step. I rode in the fast trains across town dealing with stinky train compartments and roguish commuters. I shopped and bargained for everything -after all everything was negotiable. I stood in long lines like everyone else, dealt with quality issues, sanitary woes and never once gave it a second thought. Delays, filth, poverty, corruption were an integral part of where I grew up. Did not think twice before bribing a cop for parking in a no parking zone, after all they were not paid that well right? I paid for movie tickets in black in desperation and contributed for what was considered the norm. That was India for me. That was my home. I was part of this society, just fitting in - guilty as charged.
During the 90s, it became increasingly common for students or young brides to go abroad for further studies or simply to start a new life. I joined that bandwagon too, grudgingly, as I was very happy being on my own soil and in my happening career. I got married and moved to the United States with a great deal of skepticism and anxiety. There I was, in a new place, with new people and in a new culture and most importantly with a new husband. I found out soon enough that the best way to adjust in the United States was to either study, get a job, volunteer or join a group of desis. I decided to study further and get a taste of University life there. I enrolled for a business degree and became part of mainstream America.
I truly believe that people are same everywhere so I went with the notion that Americans are no different than any other people. For the most part I found this to be true. But I was bowled over by the professionalism of teachers, doctors, and waiters, even an employee at a grocery store. A student is evaluated based on how they approach a problem and not simply by the correct answer. A waiter greets you with a smile and is knowledgeable about the food and works hard for the tip you leave behind. A customer is treated like a king and they have a return policy for everything. The roads are always clean, there is never any garbage on the streets and greeting people including strangers with a ‘hi how are you doing’ is a cultural thing. Clean roads, clean stores, clean everything. I often wondered is this for real? My kids had a clean and safe park to go to. You drank water from your tap when even bottled water in India was questionable. There were community centers for organized classes, public library that gave access to free books or even the Internet. Exotic world foods or ingredients were available everywhere, organic foods had special stores and people with special needs actually had access to go anywhere. People were given space and individuality was part of this society. You could wear a pair of shorts or a skimpy shirt and no one would care. A sudden burst of freedom appeared in my life. Comparisons were drawn and I liked the new environment I was thrown into. The idea that I was an individual nurtured and age or gender was no longer a bar to achieve anything. I never faced gender bias or race issues and always felt that people genuinely wanted to learn more about my culture. I basked in this very desirable lifestyle for 11 years. But there was always something amiss. I missed my home, I missed my family and I missed my culture tremendously.
The idea that we would return was always present, dormant but very much there; but slowly it started taking shape in our minds. Going back to India became a topic of intense discussion in our desicircles. relocating back to India became a possibility. India was transforming into a booming economy. There were foreign investments and better opportunities especially for Indian software professionals. A good time to move back home we argued. With renewed confidence and the idea that we would share our experiences and changed attitudes with the new India, we made the decision to finally relocate to Bangalore, India.
With a job firmly secured with a US based company with corporate offices in Bangalore, we returned to India. The biggest fear and there were many, was how well would we fit in India 11 years later? Could we deal with the sanitary conditions, would our kids get the type of education they received in the US? Would we have to compromise on the standard of living? Would there be the same work ethics we saw in the United States here? Would we have to deal with social pressures and obligations we have been so far away from? Averaging a stay of 10-15 years in the United States, most of us are grappling with the task of wanting to return to our roots but expecting the same amenities and facilities and lifestyle we received in the US. We decided then and there that we have to go with the right attitude and a sense of humor to survive the new age India.
Returning to India has been the most rewarding experience for us with of course a few expected and unexpected hiccups. It is good to be home and I am happiest that my children have the opportunity of living in a culture that identifies with us. At the same time I feel they have the opportunity to be enriched by the wonderful ethics and integrity that the US culture taught us. We have returned to India with an open mind armed with an unfazed sense of humor and a lot to give and we look forward to be part of this globalization that has disintegrated the walls of the world.

There are a number of companies that specialize in moving to India. Make your self comfortable with the Company, its policies and advise of any special requirements you might have and also give them a chance to ask any questions or advise you about the move.
Though price is a crucial determinant, don’t choose a mover only based on price, instead pick a mover that suits your requirements, circumstances and one that puts you at ease in terms of quality and service.

Show them around and make them aware of all items (including plants, piano, items that need ladders etc) to be moved.
If you are having various company representatives to come and visit make sure you are prepared. They will want to look every where, under the stairs, inside cupboards and even under your beds. Anything that needs to go with you must be put on your inventory form or shown to the company representatives. It you do call up and ask several removal companies to give you a quote it is very important that you ask them all the same questions and to do exactly the same things, if not then you will receive quotes that not only vary widely, but are for completely different jobs.
Carry or Dispose Its time to go through your stuff and decide what you would like to keep, throw away, sell or give away. Remember to point out to moving company representative what items you will not ship to India.

Import Regulations for Pets
Pets Can be Imported into India as Excess Baggage or As Unaccompanied Cargo / Manifested Cargo. However there are restrictions as indicated below
As Excess Baggage
A maximum of 2 pets per shipper can be imported to India, as excess baggage or accompanied cargo. The pet owner or caretaker must accompany the pet during the transport in order to fulfill the requirements for non-commercial transport. Pets can be imported into India as excess baggage through most major Indian airports.
If you are bringing your pet as excess baggage, you will need to have to apply for an No Objection Certificate (NOC)/ Import Permit from the Animal Quarantine Station. However this cannot be applied online and will require the assistance of an agent in India. The process to obtain NOC will take 2 to 3 working days. Hence all documents required for obtaining NOC should be sent 7 working days in advance to the pet moving company.
Procedural Formalities:
Obtain No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Quarantine Officer at the Animal Quarantine Station in India 5 days before your travel.
Provide a copy of the NOC to the airline in order to reconfirm booking of the pet.
Affix a duplicate copy of the NOC to the crate during the air travel.
Produce a copy of the NOC in India to get the pet released from the customs at the Airport in India.
On arrival in to India, immediately take the pet to the Quarantine Officer (prior appointment required) for examination and issue of a temporary Health Certificate.
After 30 days obtain a certificate of health from a local veterinarian and produce it to the Animal Quarantine Station and obtain a permanent quarantine certificate.
As Unaccompanied Cargo / Manifested Cargo.
Pets can be imported into India as unaccompanied cargo through New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata Airports only. If you are bringing your pet as unaccompanied cargo, in addition to the above pet moving companies will also require below documents

CHALLENGES OF MOVING A PET TO INDIA AND DEALING WITH THE PET MOVE
The below information is only given as a guide to enable you to understand the challenges of pet moving in India and how to prepare yourself adequately. Despite these challenges many pets are cleared every day through various airports in India.
Indian Airports do not have separate facility for holding pets. All pets are kept in common cargo-handling area, which can be very humid and hot. Please ensure there is adequate water for pets.
Till the pet is actually cleared through customs, a clearing agent might not have access to the pet, since pet will be kept in a bonded area. The ownership of pets during such time will be that of the port handling authority and airline.
Since there are no dedicated customs officers for handling pets, there could be delays of many hours before a pet is cleared. This can be understandably very tiring and frustrating for both pet and the owner. To avoid additional delays please complete documentation well in advance and avoid last minute rushes.
Most Airlines in India do not have adequately trained staff at airports to handle pets in India.
In the event of delays at customs clearance, please be patient and friendly with the concerned examining officers. Sharing a light word or two goes a long way in cutting delays.
Curious airport porters trying to play / tease the pets are unfortunately common in Indian Airports. In the event of this happening you can request them not to disturb the pet.
