I think being caught right in the middle of this huge anti culture fandom shift hurt me on a deep level that I am unable to fully comprehend even now.

Right now, I’m slowly but surely teaching myself that things have reached far far out of my control and that it’s time to get over it and truly move on. Because if I don’t, I’ll never be happy.

I was reading a bunch of heretage post and it was super funny at first, but then I got to some of the old fandom post and looking at the replies on the post suddenly got me super depressed.

Idk something about the current overall additude towards old fandom in general (superwholock, oncler, Hetalia etc.) puts me in a really dark place mentally.

There’s definitely many conversations to be had about the problematic aspects of the media and fandoms of those times, but they were still an important and cherished part of my childhood nonetheless. So to have these things constantly shit on, torn apart and made a joke of every single time I hear about them nowadays is just kinda depressing...

Participating in fandom on TikTok has radicalized me in ways I can’t really understand.

Like non of my views have really changed but watching anti rhetoric become mainstream and merge with content creativity has been catastrophic on my mental health.

Last week I saw someone call a joke about a fictional character with no confirmed age “literal cp” and I had to delete the app.

I’ll see if I come back in a month. I like TikTok for a lot of reasons, but if if comes at the price of being forced to confront this way of thinking that has been sooo traumatic and isolating for me, I don’t think I’ll be able to stay on the platform.

Y’all I hate hate hate when people say a fandom is toxic, but their reason for saying it’s toxic is because some people shipped a problematic ship or something.

Like you do realize these problematic ships are going to exist in literally any fandom no matter what? And you can’t magically make it disappear off the face of the earth, so why would you give it the attention it needs to grow? The more something is being talked about - good or bad - the more popular it becomes. That thing starts to be what the community is known for.

I am truly appalled and disgusted by how you can promote and actively encourage not seeking help for the many mentally ill people you know are in this community and read your words. Therapy and psychiatric medication stopped me from killing myself. Fluoxetine and CBT are the only reasons receiving my diagnoses didn't make me jump off a bridge, and believe me I wanted to. If I hadn't have sought help, if I'd have believed Tumblr's anti-recovery rhetoric and thought therapy was going to be a bunch of horseshit, I would not be here to listen to your mental health version of antivaxx misinformation today. You should consider the impact your words have on young neurodivergent people who need support and think about the consequences of spreading anti-recovery messages in a primarily nd space.
