The Avonlea girls were walking arm in arm towards the student cafƩ after class, laughing at a story Tilly Boulter was sharing about one of her suitors tripping and tumbling down a staircase, when Royal Gardner stopped them short.
āGood afternoon, ladies,ā he greeted, tipping his hat.
āGood afternoon,ā they replied in unison, eyes wide and sneaking glances at their flame-haired friend.
āHello Anne,ā smiled Roy with a sincere charm and endearing shyness.
Anne Shirley-Cuthbert felt the blood drain from her face. āHello,ā she gulped. āRoy.ā
āMay I speak with you?ā
āNow?ā Anne looked at her friends, hoping one of them could help her escape the current predicament. āI, um, Iāā
āWe regret to say she cannot indulge you at the moment, Mr. Gardner,ā Diana Barry interjected. āWeāre off to tea and we have some pressing matters to discuss.ā
One of them being how Anne should deal with Royal Gardner and his advances towards her, the girls thought to themselves silently.
āI see,ā the boy nodded. āWell, Iāll see you in English class, Anne. Good day, ladies.ā
āGood day,ā chirped the girls.
Once Roy Gardner was out of earshot, the girls looked at Anne with sly grins.
Anne gritted her teeth. āDo not say a single word about it until we are seated.ā
After Tilly finished recounting the staircase mishap, the girls did a spectacular job talking about the weather and class and Mr. Sanderson and everything but the elephant in the room.
They entered the cafƩ, Sirs that Serve, with a chime sounding their presence at the door. Charlie and Moody greeted them promptly.
āHello there, ladies,ā grinned Moody Spurgeon, donned in a brown cafĆ© apron. Sirs that Serve was a popular hangout spot for the Queenās students due to its progressive and modern air, with all-male servers and a wall-sized bulletin board covered with colourful pinned flyers of Charlottetownās various social events in which the townās young adults, specifically Queenās students, took careful notice. The most recent post was one announcing Queenās College Winter Ball at the end of the semester.
