Medical residents don’t need ice cream and wellness weeks to survive grueling schedules and the deep trauma of patients and families. We need the wisdom of the Stoics.

There’s been plenty of good medblr discussion on this topic before but this article does a good job showing why ice cream and yoga aren’t going to fix resident mental health.

Excellent article. I think teaching us healthy coping strategies like compartmentalizing is probably better than this whole “wellness” push. I’m a strong advocate for taking care of yourself, but until residencies stop giving us 120 hours of work to do in 80 hours, we’re always going to feel behind, stressed, and lacking time for ourselves. Don’t send us to do yoga for an hour. Teach us how to deal with what we’re facing.

Read this article yesterday and have been debating it with lots of people. The range of reactions has been astounding, from confusion to agreement to anger to denial. That said, this piece resonated with me because I have had days like this, and I think most of us have. But when will medicine give its residents to not be okay, to give permission to seeking help without censure? If we can work on that first before giving out massages and ice cream, we will be actually addressing the core stressors and struggles that come with residency instead of trying to pretend that medicine is “just like any profession.” It’s not.

Today we learned that chequered flowers are a thing! This is Fritillaria meleagris from the lily family. It has several common names, including snake’s head, chess flower, and chequered lily. It was first described by herbalist John Gerard in the 16th century.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the star-nosed mole looks funny. Its distinctive star-shaped nose is a highly-sensitive organ, but the mole doesn’t just use it for finding its way through the underground tunnels it lives in. These moles can actually sniff underwater. By exhaling a bubble and then re-inspiring it, the moles collect scent particles that they can use to locate food. In experiments, both star-nosed moles and water shrews could use this technique to successfully follow a scent trail, demonstrating exploring and pausing behaviors similar to terrestrial sniffing as they did. Oh my gosh. I knew that all babies practice adult behaviors, but I’d never thought about baby peacocks practicing this behavior. I’m dead of cute.

Aw, this reminds me of our peacock Adam trying to impress the two peahens with his pathetic teenage display - they would stroll away, totally unimpressed, and he would run after them trying to get in their line of sight. It was hilarious, especially with the fluffy white butt feathers.

I once went to a game park where I got to see a teenage peacock trying his best to impress a couple of peahens. Not quite as cute as the wee babies, but still pretty funny.
