bonus: super short drabble under the cut
“I got Zoro this,” Luffy says, pulling something from his pocket. “It was sharp and green and pointy and pretty—just like Zoro! It made me think of you, so I took it.”
“So you stole it.”
Luffy rolls his eyes. “Well, duh. We’re pirates, Zoro; that’s kinda what we do. Did you forget?”
Zoro snorts out a laugh, amused. “No, I didn’t forget, captain.”
Luffy’s holding a plant—something familiar Zoro hasn’t seen in years. It has lost some leaves along the way, having undoubtedly taken the brunt of whatever mayhem Luffy’s caused while they were marooned on the island he nabbed his gift from. The berries are a bit squished, too, but the plant is still recognisable. Zoro takes it from Luffy, his fingers brushing against the younger pirate’s. He smirks.
He pokes at the spikes on the leaves with his fingertip. “It’s sharp alright. Could slice someone’s throat with this.”
Luffy grins. “Zoro’s so dumb! That’s not a knife—look, it has berries! It’s a snack!”
Zoro shrugs, because, sure. Why not. He knows what that is though, and it isn’t food. And he also knows what you’re supposed to do when you have one.
“Hold this above our heads, okay?” he instructs his captain, lacing the fingers of their free hands together. “People on my home island used to hang these on doors sometimes for some reason.”
“Why?” Luffy’s nose scrunches the way it does when he’s curious or confused or hungry. Zoro’s not sure which one he is right now, but he’d wager it’s a mix of all three. He smiles, pulls Luffy closer.
The kiss is soft and loving and perfect. Luffy’s eyes close, and he laughs a little, content. Zoro watches him, and he falls in love with his king, all over again.
