As both a psych major and a mentally ill person I cannot begin to tell you how many people I have met in my classes who make me concerned for the safety and health of mentally ill people everywhere, especially the young children who struggle.

My first psychology class was fucking wild. Put of around 35 of us only three (one being a close friend of mine) of us had any sort of mental illness. Intro Psych is mainly about brain development with only a small section at the end being about mental illness but Oh Fucking Boy did everyone’s weird ass stereotypes and fetishes jump out in the last chapter.

We were talking about schizophrenia and the one other girl with mental illness was a schizophrenic (it wasn’t known until this exact moment). We were talking about symptoms when someone just asked outloud, “Aren’t schizos like super likely to murder people though?”

I thought, okay, one guy still stuck in the fucking 80’s, whatever.

But Then A Bunch Of People Start Agreeing

And soon we were 20minutes into class and everyone had shared a case of a schizophrenic murdering, abusing, etc etc and They Saw Nothing Wrong With Thinking These Stereotypes Were A Standard

The prof finally stopped them and asked if anyone wanted to make one last statement and this poor girl just raises her hands and “I just thought you all should know that I’m schizophrenic and have never thought about murdering someone, nor have I ever hurt anyone apart from myself.”

And… no one apologized. They literally felt no guilt at all for bashing this girl.

The same exact thing happened when we talked about depression, anxiety, and ptsd.

“Ptsd is what soldiers get after war right?”

“Yeah sometimes, but anyone can suffer from it after a traumatic event”

“How would you know, are you the professor now?”

“No, but I have ptsd from a car crash that nearly killed me so…”

Like god damn I really fucking hate neurotypicals trying to satisfy some weird curiosity they have for “crazy” people or whatever it is like please stay like 3000ft away from anyone with a mental illness and never fucking talk to them dear god

Remember that movie in which Jack Black was a teacher and building a rock band and when a little black chubby girl asked to be a singer he only said “sure! let me hear you” and the moment she started using her beautiful voice his lit up like all of his dreams came true, PLUS the same little girl was scared that people would make fun of her because she was fat and he started listing awesome singers with some weight on and included himself and told her that people wouldn’t laugh because she is awesome at what she does and that is all that matters PLUS that it’s ok to enjoy food?

Also, when a little boy asked to be the band’s stylist he just said “sure, go ahead fancy pants” like, there wasn’t a single second of questioning it, he went into “ok, that will be your position then” right away

That fucking movie is an hour and a half of Jack Black teaching kids to love themselves disregarding all of the stereotypes

And don’t forget the Asian guy said he shouldn’t be in the band because he thought he wasn’t “cool enough”. Jack Black didn’t miss a beat by making up a secret handshake between he and the kid.and telling him he’s amazing at what he does playing the piano. After that the Asian kid even stood up for himself against a bully.

when Ellen came out, the backlash was so harsh that she didn’t work for three years. lesbians were man-hating dyke perverts, to be kept away from children and from the public eye, and she was treated like it. when she did get back into the industry, she struggled to come back as anything more than The Lesbian who had caused all that controversy. people hated her, and by proxy hated Oprah (and sent her racist threats and insults) for her role in Ellen’s coming out.

so it’s no wonder that when she got the chance Ellen took up a talk show that allowed her to build a reputation as a friendly, happy, and utterly harmless character. since coming out, she has steered almost explicitly away from politics, especially from focusing too much on being a lesbian. she is just a friendly, smiling, liberal-leaning and generous talk show host, almost apolitical and tiptoeing around controversy where her peers (Stephen Colbert, James Corden, Conan O’Brien, John Oliver, Trevor Noah, etc.) have been able to be explicitly political.

when the Ellen netflix special comes out, I think we’re gonna see Ellen be political, be controversial, be crass or snarky or daring in ways that break severely with what we think Ellen’s personality is. And frankly, I want us all to be so ready for it, because the woman has waited so long–has seen an entire generation come and go–just to be able to be an open, successful, controversial lesbian, and i want her to be loved for it
