koddiaa:
He imagined embracing her like they always did when one was upset, the other acting as a pillar to hold their twin up in a time of distress. They would hide away from the eyes of their master and the other workers, even the other slaves, and whisper to each other and gesture in a language indecipherable to other beings.
But they weren’t children hiding under blankets in the corner of the slave’s quarters of the ship anymore, holding onto the night before another day of being objects came around again. They were free people now and wishing away a day wasn’t something they did now, instead they wished for one more day.
One more day, Shocadi had to hold out another day, and another after that until a cure was found.
Koddi smiled ruefully at her. “Is anyone in there causing trouble? I know some of the people in there with you, they must be stirring things up. You know, Sho, I almost wish I was in there with you”
It was a joke, he didn’t mean it…
That pang of fear rushed through Shocadi. The thought of her brother getting sick and becoming trapped in here with her would would nearly break her. She wanted her brother to be far away from the infected-- away from all of this mess. Not right in the middle of it.
They couldn’t hold onto each other like they normally would. They had to talk to each other through this wall of glass. Shocadi wasn’t sleeping and she doubted that Koddia was either.
“No one is causing trouble. Everyone is too tired to do that. Even those in the Order are being relatively tame.” And they had the leaders of the Order in there with her. “I don’t,” Shocadi said softly. “I miss you, but I don’t want you to get sick too. I’ll be out of here soon enough. I know between all of you, something will come up and I’ll get out of here.”
