i was going to do this and then forgot so here are all the classes i took in high school ranked by how much i learned from them (least to most)

19 - marine science: um. it was a fun class! which meant we did absolutely nothing. like i did not learn anything about marine science. i did some projects that were loosely correlated to marine science! but i did not learn from them…also me and a friend of mine were always praised by the teachers (there were two teachers for some reason who were both very nice and cool but like i didn’t learn from them) because we did…the bare minimum? meaning we did the assignments? on time? idk man

18 - pe & health: well i feel like this is pretty self explanatory. woah i threw a ball! didn’t really learn from that. i also remember they squashed the sex ed and drugs units together in the same trimester, and america’s sex education already sucks and the substance education is worse so…

17 - advanced function analysis: this was just integrated math review basically. i improved the skills that i already accumulated so that’s something?

16 - drama: i guess i learned about random drama trivia and like…recited monologues. idk i feel like i learned more about acting by doing the actual productions. like even when i switched to tech, i feel like i learned more about what actors did from watching them in productions, rather than being in drama class? idk.

15 - spanish: i did learn some stuff! especially in spanish 6 which was surprisingly my favorite one! but then i forgot it all…so i guess learning was there but retention was not.

14 - biology: mitosis and meiosis, bitch! i also grew a plant with a mutation. fun stuff! forgot most of it.

13 - ap world history: ok i did learn some stuff but it was super broad knowledge and i wish that we got more into the specifics of the civilizations we learned about rather than just a broad picture. like why were we learning about two countries on the opposite side of the globe with completely different themes at the same time? i remember some broad concepts, but the only specific things i remember are champa rice, arabian camels, and filial piety. so yeah!

12 - honors english: i really do think i learned a lot from my english classes, i just don’t remember much about this specific one. i feel like it was a really good beginner english class though and i loved reading/writing memoirs and short stories and stuff!

11 - chemistry: i DID learn chemistry…i did NOT like it.

10 - honors humanities: this was a really fun class! i really loved seeing more of the arts in english, and i definitely plan on taking more classes with this similar vibe! i also feel like i became a better presenter and conversationalist because of this class, and those are super important skills!

9 - ceramics: i learned a completely new art form so yeah that’s a lot of learning. i also really enjoyed it! it was very therapeutic and i got to make cool stuff for myself and my loved ones for free and i will for sure be doing more in the future <3

8 - ap government and politics: i am the politics friend ™️ so i obviously love learning about politics and i did learn some cool facts and terms! but also because i am politics friend ™️, i will admit that i already knew the majority of the curriculum already, due to personal research or a different, more personally educational class (subtle foreshadowing). as a result, i did unfortunately catch myself repeatedly in class thinking “I KNOW THIS SHIT ALREADY,” which was a bit frustrating from a learning perspective! still had fun though :)

7 - integrated math: this was foundational math that i still use today. so like duh. i learned stuff.

6 - ap statistics: ok i ranked this higher than integrated BECAUSE i feel like it was more useful personally? again as politics friend ™️, i have and will continue to analyze patterns within human nature and politics! and this class was a good start for learning how to do that! also it has kinda cool terms sometimes.

5 - ap human geography: i learned a lot about human nature! and a lot of things were interesting to me and captured my attention, so it was easier to learn! i really liked the linguistics unit and also the political geography unit was super helpful and i am now prepared to not be a complete embarrassment if someone stops me on the street and asks me to test my geography skills (unlike most of america). that said, please do not stop me on the street and ask me to rest my geography skills, i would freak the fuck out!

4 - ap psychology: this was really helpful because it taught me a lot about why we do the things we do and allowed me and my friends to have very educated bits using psych terms <3 also learned a lot about mental health and how psychology is intertwined with politics!

3 - ap english language: like i said, i feel like i learned a lot from my english classes. i was debating on putting this one second, but decided third was better suited. anyway apel taught me a lot about writing structure! i still am a “fuck it, we ball” person when it comes to most of my writing, but apel taught me to “fuck it, we ball” in like…an eloquent manner! also the argumentative unit helped me a lot and will definitely help in the future with the field i plan on going into.

2 - ap english literature: ok i put this one above apel BECAUSE i feel like it gave me more worldly knowledge, if that makes sense? like. i definitely gained more global perspective as a whole, which is definitely because we were exposed to a DIVERSE collection of writers, and that definitely wasn’t the case in my previous english classes. i also feel like i was able to find my voice as a writer more in this class, and figure out what kind of literature i’m personally into! it’s definitely the english classes with the most impact on my character and that’s why i think it deserves the second place spot.

1 - ap us history: fork found in kitchen. this is my favorite class i’ve ever taken with my favorite teacher i’ve ever had and i learned my favorite fun facts and random skills (reciting all 47 presidencies and the succession line to the presidency) from this class. it was the perfect balance of educational, fun, collaborative, and impactful. it also helped me truly solidify the career path i wanted to take, so that’s for sure a lot of learning! in a weird way, it also helped me learn that i’m smart and can be a role model/tutor to my peers and it gave me the confidence to embrace my intellect! anyway yeah i love apush and i think i learned just as much about myself as i did about us history (cheesy i know, but let me have this)

the merry adventures of robin hood: this was fun! they kept saying the same words and doing the same things and i kept annotating “fork found in kitchen” on my copy but it was fun! well, until the end when it got really dark and my group was like “wait what? what happened to the merry jolly gay stout yeomen?” also will scarlet my goat

the lathe of heaven: banger. really cool. woahhh dreams! also i think i just really like ursula k le guin because her writing style is freaking awesome and her stories are super creative and yeah! i didn’t exactly understand the daoist connections, but it was still really good social commentary and i feel like dr haber was a really great villain! yeah!

the princess bride: I LOVE THIS BOOK! we just rewatched the movie as a group and it was great but the book is INCREDIBLE. hands down my favorite of the year because of how entertaining it is and also because of the really awesome meta narrative. also william goldman creating a fictional version of himself is so fucking funny. ALSO the characterization???? incredible. shoutout westley shoutout inigo shoutout fezzik shoutout the albino shoutout buttercup shoutout everyone (i was gonna purposely exempt vizzini because he’s annoying as hell but THAT ADDS TO THE CHARACTERIZATION THING). also this book has great social commentary too! fictional william goldman literally getting rid of parts of the story to better suit his goal? yellin being paid off by criminals? incredible book i loved every second yippee!

review of everything i read (long works specifically, because there were too many short stories and i don’t remember them very well) in ap lit tri 2

hamlet: woah! i read the most referenced work in literature history (according to my ap lit teacher, don’t @ me and be like “erm actually” because shut up)! i liked hamlet because of the cool plot points and how shakespeare kind of decided to go “fuck it, we ball” and write characters in a very unusual way for him, which made it super fun to read and watch! we read this while watching the kenneth branagh hamlet which was…an experience! why exactly was it set in czar russia? um. kate winslet was in it and that’s pretty cool, and also billy crystal! anyway back to hamlet. i liked reading it but i was also like “damn. this guy sucks i want to pray on his downfall” and then my prayers were answered!

jane eyre: ok so i went into this book thinking i would love it but i finished it with “wait what the fuck.” i think the main problem was that i didn’t really understand how mr rochester was supposed to be a nice guy…like…he kind of sucked? and then jane found her independence and i was like “yay! she isn’t grounding her happiness on a man!” but then she went back to him???? and i feel like that kind of undermined the narrative. but also maybe that was the point. but also brönte i’m confused on your purpose here. this book does have some really great quotes though! that’s nice! and my lit group created an entire inside joke around the character of bertha that i will not elaborate on because you guys are OUTSIDERS (haha).

things fall apart: wow! things really fell apart! i liked how this book was written because it was very straightforward and i also liked how achebe wrote it without explaining any lore because if the eastern hemisphere is supposed to automatically understand and prioritize western culture. then vice versa should be apparent as well. yeah i liked it, i think the only problem is that i feel like the shift from 0-100 was kind of out of nowhere but also that could be an intentional choice?

the picture of dorian gray: i LOVE this book. it’s so applicable and relevant to modern society, but also to pretty much the entirety of history! i LOVE oscar wilde’s writing and general style in this novel. i also found the book’s parallels to wilde’s own life pretty interesting, and yeah. LOVE!!!!

ok so @epistolarydiegesis did this and i thought it was cool so here’s a review of everything (excluding short stories because i don’t remember them very well) that i read in ap lit tri 1 (tri 2 & tri 3 incoming)

hard times: um. this was a book! i think i didn’t really enjoy it because charles dickens social commentary is equivalent to taylor swift feminism. like he called his work social commentary, but it didn’t really feel like he was saying much? it was more general commentary, like things that we all already agree one. taylor swift is like “women should have rights!” and charles dickens is like “poverty sucks!” and like…okay? we know that already? what are you, the wealthy and privileged person going to do about it? because you can do a lot! and also talk about more controversial things? but like both are scared to talk about more controversial things because they don’t want to lose their audience and i guess i understand but also damn. also i really hate how he wrote out the characters’ accents and speech impediments.

fleabag: i liked this play! it was extremely vulgar but i really liked how it didn’t try to present the main character as a great person because she sucked a lot of the time! i also think media in general hates to depict women as harsh and crass and boooo we should do that more. a feminist story isn’t supposed to be like “look at this woman, she’s awesome! that proves that all women are awesome and should have equal rights!” all the time, and i think it’s really cool that fleabag was like “damn she sucks. but she should have the ability and the right to make terrible, irrational decisions and be a sucky person, just like men do! and instead of justifying her sucky decisions like how we do with men, we (and the characters in the play and herself) call her out on it! and we should DO THE SAME FOR MEN!” anyway yeah i liked fleabag and the other girl at my table did and the guys at our table did not…this says a lot about society.

frankenstein: woah! i feel like with “classics” i always think i know a lot more about the plot than i actually do, so when i was reading this book i was like “oh shit! that happens?” anyway i really liked frankenstein, partially because i love reading about pathetic characters (victor frankenstein), as well as vengeance (sought after by frankenstein’s monster), but mainly because i wrote a really cool feminist essay about the exemption of the female perspective, and i really liked it and my teacher liked it!

no exit: this was probably my favorite play that i read all year. not much happens plot-wise but the characterization was fucking awesome and it was SO ahead of its time hello???? anyway yeah i love when plays have really intense characterization as a priority, but maybe i only like that when i’m reading them and not watching them because i feel like watching no exit might be a completely different experience with a completely different opinion from me.

the rise of corruption and obscenity since the jackson administration: an expose on elementary school carnival cakewalks

today @epistolarydiegesis and i were volunteering at the cakewalk of an elementary school carnival, and i, self-proclaimed history nerd, noticed some parallels to the patronage system that was founded by andrew jackson. this kid that they allowed to mc and lowkey run the game for some reason was purposely choosing the numbers that his friends had and i was like “oh my god holy patronage system, this third grader is corrupt as FUCK.” but i was also like “eh he’s got charisma for an mc, you’ve gotta give him that” and then i was like “OH MY GOD THAT’S WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT JACKSON AND THAT’S WHY THEY LET HIM GET AWAY WITH SO MUCH.” and then after it was so chester arthur with the pendleton act core because it felt like kids were winning based off of merit (although it’s not like the cakewalk game exactly runs on merit but let’s pretend that it does) because this kid that was doing precalc level trig and carrying around this ginormous fantasy novel (he was like 11 years old max) was winning a bunch and i was like yay! he’s not cheating! as for the obscenity, they kept choosing the most DIABOLICAL songs for the ELEMENTARY cakewalk…like why were they playing get your freak on by missy elliot???? house tour???? where the hell is my husband???? but also i have a vivid memory of an elementary school friday flag of my own where s&m by rihanna was playing so i really can’t be talking…anyway thanks for reading the rise of corruption and obscenity since the jackson administration: an expose on elementary school carnival cakewalks
