One of the things that just kills me about Homelander is that he’s actually really funny. He’s witty and perceptive (about others) and observant. He has a great turn of phrase and comedic timing.

Now granted this is because he is a character written by a team of professional writers, but it just makes me more sad for how things ended up. It’s clearly canon that he can act - he’s acting all over the place, not only in movies, but in trying to hold together a public persona carrying everyone else’s expectations.

He should’ve been the kid that a teacher encourages to write for the literary magazine or tryout for a play. He should’ve spent his 20s making snarky posts on Twitter and maybe turning his trauma into stand up at some open mic nights. He could have learned to play an acoustic guitar badly and do some songwriting or enter a poetry contest. His cultural commentary on the last 25 years could’ve been gloriously incisive. Maybe a blog that led to a book or a Guardian column or something.

Instead, Vogelbaum was laser (ha) focused on making him physically strong and infusing him with fucked up ideas about toxic masculinity. You had a kid with great voice, but all you cared about was making him durr durr punch hard.

And now look what you did. You ruined a perfectly good writer. You made it a sociopath.

Anyway, here's a helpful diagram. When I was hit on the temple this was one of the harder things I had to reteach myself. Don't be shamed into not asking questions, and it's alright if it takes you a while to figure it out. Don't let someone make you feel bad for learning new things, or relearning old ones.
