My sister got married last month and as it was a Vietnamese Wedding Ceremony, this meant that the ceremony (part of it anyways) was at my parent’s house. This also meant a lot of DIY hand decorations around the house. With only the help of my best friend, we did a bang up job of making everything picture perfect. One of my proudest creation is the wedding card box. For two kids with no experience or expertise in hands and craft, we made a pretty sturdy box that opened at the bottom…out of three shoe boxes.
First we got three boxes of different sizes. I cut the bottom out of the top two boxes and fixed them on with tape and a stapler. I will admit our process was messy but the result was satisfactory enough. As for the bottom box, we flipped it upside down so that the top of the shoe box can be taken off after the ceremony to remove the cards. Also don’t forget to cut out a small opening at the top for where the cards goes in.
After we’ve got the box cut and glued together, we took it in the backyard and painted it white to cover up the letterings and logos that would have showed up under the covering. The paint took a while to dry since we had to do multiple coats with drying time in between the coats of paint as we didn’t want the cardboard to become wet and crumple.
After the paint had completely dried, we covered it in a plastic table cloth that you can buy at any dollar store. We simply covered it completely and then sewed the corners of the boxes together so that it was a tight fit. Yes you’ll have bunches of fabric in the corners and edges but we’ve covered it with the pink fabrics anyways so it doesn’t look quite as messy.
Then using rolls of tulles, we sewed it around each of the three levels on the top edge of each level. To create more texture and volume we sewed it on in a pleated pattern. Using a hot glue gun, we simply just lined the top of each level with a cream solid ribbon and tied the bottom of each box with a sheer purple ribbon finishing it by tying a bow on the left corner of each level.
For added effects, we also added on the diamond liners. One of the most important part, speaking of diamond liners, is the little slit at the top where the cards goes. Make sure to measure it a good width because wedding cards can come in all differing sizes and how awkward would it be when it doesn’t fit (that’s what she said).
Anyways we just cut a slit in the plastic cover and line the hole with the diamond ribbon with the glue gun. Using more Tulle fabrics, we made a pom pom looking flower and glued it to the top of the wedding box with sheer purple ribbons running down. We curled the ribbons by simply twisting it and then sewing it in sections down the box and hiding the part that is sewn down with the white pearls. We then added more white pearls so the initial ones didn’t look out of place.
We also added a pink butterfly to the top of the box in the left corner as well as one on each side in the middle section. We also added what we joked as “butterfly poop”, a scattering of pink pearls scattering in gradient from the butterfly.
All in all, it was meant to look like a Wedding cake but some people have told me it looks like the box is wearing a Wedding Dress. Either way is good enough for me. Cheers~
