i think about how yasmin treated venetia in s2 all the timeeeeeee there’s something about that particular brand of spitefulness and selfishness she has that you really don’t see very often, you really live in it and it resonates with you because like. imagine going through all that with kenny and then when the new ‘you’ shows up suddenly everyone is reformed and no one is a misogynist and no gross boundaries are being crossed. like thats the type of stuff that drives somebody crazy, seeing someone in the vulnerable position you were once in and nothing of what happened to you happens to them and all you are left with is the icky feeling that it happened to you and you only for a reason. something in the way you were made. there’s also another aspect here with venetia being someone who is not afraid of advocating for herself, who has strong boundaries and doesn’t let them get muddled and its the exact type of thing that scratches at yasmin’s insecurity - she’s soft and weak and jealous of harper’s ability to assert herself because she doesn’t know how. she wants someone to give her agency. and i think that if venetia had been given the same horrible treatment yasmin received, yasmin would’ve liked to act as the safe space venetia was searching for, she wouldve leaned into that female solidarity and wouldve been happy to think of herself as a hero. except of course she wouldn’t have actually done anything about changing the environment. when something horrible does happen to venetia, yasmin is well-intentioned. she unironically believes she is helping venetia and providing guidance because the idea that ‘exploitation is opportunity’ is the bedrock of her entire life philosophy. crazy stuff. s1 is very much about harper and yasmin coming into contact with this world and ultimately choosing to stick by it - their big fight at the end comes from the fact that yasmin turned all that harm inwards by choosing to stay silent about kenny while harper turned it outwards by choosing eric over daria and getting her fired. but neither of them are actually interested in changing the culture and yasmin starts pointing the knife towards others not long after
