Elliot’s wall is now up to date! Four singles to go to finish his grand :)
How did you organize them?
Top board are the ribbons he earned towards his championship and the bottom his grand. In order by date. I personally only display ribbons with points attached to them. ;)
Rosettes to the left and his one and only coursing ribbon to the right.
Got to get him out for more coursing 😎. My mantra: Pedigree indicates what the animal should be. Conformation indicates what the animal appears to be. Performance indicates what the animal actually is. Would love to see more coursing B’s out there. 😂 @crazysenji
Time and money prevent me from doing more coursing. He is fully capable of doing it.
I love how organized your ribbons are.
I need a ribbon room so that mine can look this fancy.
One of the many perks of living alone: trophy room! (It’s also my nerdy collection and craft room)
Most of my larger “trophies” are throughout the house. Cookie jar, clock, tea tray, coffee mug I’m drinking out of right now.. Dog shows have strange trophies haha.
Eee! That looks awesome! I have a collection of ICKC/UKC ribbons organized sort of like this, but most of my AKC ribbons are just packed in a shoe box. I should start a pinboard like that though! That’s neat!
Congrats on winning this year’s National Dog Show, Charlie!
A "dreamy" explanation
To be quite honest, there is a rather large group of people that will not talk to me at dog shows (or any other time) and people have a habit of being friendly and then just.... Not. There may be a few explanations for this: >my "mentor" now essentially runs a puppy mill, and she and I had a horrendous, messy falling out in which many things were said on both sides. I was 19 at the time, so I should have known better but teenagers are teenagers. >my best friend has a habit of pissing people off by "stealing" majors using a professional handler in a breed that doesn't use them for class dogs. She's also done a lot of other things and made a lot of enemies. Her enemies are also usually my enemies. >I'm gay. That alone shouldn't alienate anyone, but my girlfriend can be incredibly toxic and volatile. She has already been alienated from several breeds and pretty much doesn't show dogs anymore because of her own actions. Her reputation is likely wearing off on me. >Lastly, I have trouble reading social cues. Most facial expressions and body language, as well as subtle shifts in vocal tone are completely beyond my grasp. It's altogether possible that I have offended these people and don't realize it. What I never anticipated being the problem, however, is what happened in a dream I had last night. To be blunt: I have lost my temper in the past and yelled at or hit one of my dogs before. I'm not a good person and I carry a lot of guilt about it. My dogs, being extremely forgiving, are not afraid of me and I have never, ever hit someone else's dog, and am actively working to control my temper and handle myself like a normal human being. In my dream I sent a Facebook message to someone being like "why doesn't anyone want to talk to me or sell me puppies (a real life deal just fell through)?" And the person responded with, "because you hurt the Tibbies." I have never hurt a Tibetan spaniel in my life. They went on to explain how there were rumors circulating that I abuse my animals and they're all fearful because I hit them and neglect/mistreat them, and they don't want to be associated with someone like that. I'm actually beyond upset and almost to the point of tears by that dream. I woke up ok about it but now I'm obsessing over "what if people actually think that?!" There's nothing I can do to make people change their minds, especially dog show people, if that's the case. I don't know. I'm really insecure about it.
Super excited! We had a fantastic UKC weekend and guess what? We came home with not only one... But TWO new UKC Champions!!!!
So, I spend a lot of time talking about Nick's funky read movement. Nick is a textbook example of the bottom left fault ("hocks turned out"). In Nick's case, this resulted from almost zero free exercise as a puppy and just leash walking, in conjunction with a long second thigh (basically he didn't have the muscle strength to hold his legs straight as he grew). It's a very good lesson in why your puppies need a lot of free exercise over varying terrain like hills, slopes, gravel, grass, etc.
Canine growth plate closure estimates. This is why you have to be careful with how much strenuous activity and conditioning you do with puppies... So you don't fuck up their growth. It's also a good estimate of when your dog is "done" growing. Original source unknown. A friend texted it to me.
UKC Redo Recap
Well, long story short: we tried UKC before, it was super disorganized, the place was super dirty, the judging sucked (and not just cause I didn't win), etc. We didn't like it. A friend of ours managed to talk us into retrying UKC, and it just so happens her dad is a judge... A judge we love. And he was judging at a UKC show hosted by a different club. ;) So to be honest we weren't expecting much after our last show, but wanted to make a good day of it, regardless, and stopped and picked up a picnic lunch for us and our friends (another benefit of going: lots of friends going!). Lo and behold... The building was clean! The show was organized! And efficiently run! The judges had skill and we knowledgable! It was -amazing-. Now, to be honest, we didn't win jack shit at this show either, aside from breed (we were the only boxers), but the other dogs in the guardian group were GORGEOUS and soundly moving so even I thought the best dog won the group, and it sure as hell wasn't mine. All total, we came home with 2 best of breed wins for AJ over competition for, if I am counting correctly, 70 points (if I'm wrong it's 50). He is either halfway or two thirds to his UKC CH title! Ellie didn't take any competition wins but she did come home with points. I can't remember how many off the top of my head. We're hoping to go to another UKC show in November and finish AJ's title up and get some competition wins for Ellie. I want to finish her UKC title very badly.
Yumna, a member of my extended basenji family (Elliot’s cousin) lost her home in a fire last week. Her dads are devastated and are desperately looking for a rental home for them and their 5 dogs. Her human “grandma” (she owns Yumna’s mom Tempest) does embroidery and makes tug toys and is donating all her proceeds to help them out.
I feel so horrible for them! They live in Quebec so I’ve never met them but we’ve had lovely convos online. They had just won the Canadian basenji nationals and now this.. I can’t imagine!!!!

This is Lisa’s store! She is well known in the lure coursing world (I think she’s a judge?). Her two bitches are Elliot’s aunts and her brindle dog is a litter mate to Morgan’s grandma. I’ve already bought toys for the boys and will be buying more!
So... Look who came home with a best in show ribbon?!
Aj's win photo for his new International champion came! I don't like how he's posting/camped out in the front, but he's matured so much! I'm really pleased as hell.
Muscle Builder Review
Okay, so awhile back I decided to try MVP K9's muscle builder supplement on my dogs. Due to some chronic health problems I have, jogging, biking, or running the dogs was out of the question. The problem, however, was that they lacked muscle tone. A friend of mine suggested a muscle builder supplement, and this one in particular. She uses it with her small dogs because she tends to get dogs from other breeders that have been crated extensively and not received enough exercise. I've definitely seen the product work wonders with her small dogs, but I was a bit gun-shy of how it would work in a bigger dog. I'm always a bit skeptical of any new supplements that come along. This one, however, WORKS. Let me be clear here: there is a visible, definitive difference between when the dogs were not on the supplement and now that they receive the supplement with their breakfast. I changed absolutely nothing in their exercise regime except adding the supplement, and I have seen amazing results. The dogs have defined, "hard" muscling that is obvious in the neck, shoulders, and rear. Their rear movement had improved exponentially. I am now confident that AJ will finish his CH, something I want sure of before. One side effect that I am pleased with that was never mentioned on the bag is that somehow... Since feeding it... AJ's ears are looking better. He used to have calcium deposits along his cropped edge on his ear that looked like big zits, and a deposit on the bell of his show side ear. The vet confirmed that what they were was calcium and that there really wasn't anything to do but deal with them and empty them. Since feeding the supplement, the deposits have disappeared almost entirely. They are completely gone from one ear, the one on his bell is gone, and the other ear only has two small stones just under the skin. Neither we nor the vet are sure what's up, but the vet thinks maybe he is better able to metabolize calcium with the supplement. His blood work came back clear, so I'm pretty excited for this bonus development! All in all, I would rate this supplement 10/10 for effectiveness and palatability. Neither one of my dogs are put off by it in the least, and since its pellet shaped it doesn't remain in the bowl like a powder would. It does smell a bit off putting to me, but the dogs think otherwise. At $60 some a bag, it is expensive, but it lasts for awhile. We get about 30 days out of a bag, give or take.
