He really didn't. He will very occasionally do something very minor if it helps him (like when Light's house is under surveillance and he can't eat apples inside any more, he finds all the cameras hoping for a blind spot where he can eat apples), but on the whole it's a massive victory for Light to get him to do anything at all. He really is just there to watch and heckle because he had nothing else going on.

he is thematically important though. without really spoiling anything his place in the show is essentially to drive home how light is in fact not an actual god. because the actual god is floating right next to him. throughout the whole show, through all the schemes and death and mind games and drama and everything, this guy is the one who comes out on top. and he does it while doing fuck all. this dude was bored one day, and decided to fuck around in the human world. he casually dropped an item that every shinigami has, the equivalent of an iphone basically, and changed the entire world. he spent years hanging out right next to the worlds deadliest serial killer, a madman who'll crush anyone in his path, and ryuk was never in even a twinge of danger. he had the time of his life watching this monkey dance for him and then left.

when you actually think about what ryuk did in the series you see that shinigami really isn't just a funny japanese word for weird flying dudes. these beings literally are gods and have all the power that implies.

and thats why they get to use the death note
