If you guys have not heard of the news yet, JYP has announced that Jeon Somi has terminated her exclusive contract with them and is basically leaving the company.
I want to be honest to anybody who is reading this, is that what I'm going to write about is basically my personal opinion, so no shade please.
To be honest, I never got into the Jeon Somi hype. Like I admit she has a very bright and positive personality, pretty face and good figure, but she never really stood out to me other than her race. She has a unique, but weak vocals and basic dance skills and that's pretty much it.
However, I think leaving JYP will do her good in some ways. Because her singing hasn't really approved since her IOI days. Ex. During Unnie's Slam Dunk when they were auditioning for parts of their song, Somi struggled not singing in falsetto. Yet I can understand the reason for it because her vocals do stick out and she doesn't want to stand out. So I think that with better training she can do much better.
I also think that leaving JYP will be good for her because:
She might leave to find a better company that will really help improve her skills. Cause let's be honest, being under any of the Big 3 companies will guarantee fame if you successfully debut, but they do have shitty contracts
Under JYP she has only been doing variety shows and minor activities. Yet, they never gave her a bit of "idol-like" promotions only when she had that duet with Eric Nam. Maybe to keep the hype for her debut to arrive they could've done a promotional single like Jeon Soyeon's "Jelly" and "Idle Song"
She is basically been going out from girl group to girl group. From trying to fight for a place to debut with Twice and seeing her best friend Chaeyong living the dream TO participating in PD101 facing much shade from other trainees because of her Big 3 status and debuting to IOI to only disband after a year TO facing struggles working on Unnies and getting close with the other members for it to end as well. The girl has been through enough
Lastly, she's only a teen. Being out of the spotlight is potentially good for her due to not having the stress of trying to debut. She needs time to grow up and figure out where she wants to go in her career or if she just wants a simpler laugh
In conclusion, even if there's no side of Somi's story yet, I hope her decision on what to do next makes her happy.
Despite me not being a Somi stan and I basically nitpick her skills, she is human and I think the next phase of her journey is gonna be tricky, but I do wish her the best. She honestly deserves it because she had multiple moments of being sidetracked.
