idk guys maybe there’s something to this climate change thing, let’s hear it out
seeing a lot of discussion of upcoming food safety deregulation that doesn't provide any options beyond "don't eat pre-prepared food and buy from local farms."
therefore, i want this thread to be for tips, advice, resources, etc, for disabled people specifically to get through the upcoming food safety deregulation in the USA. please reblog and add on advice for minimizing upcoming risk when you can only eat pre-prepared and frozen meals, rely solely on SNAP/EBT for groceries, etc.
(i'll admit this is a bit selfish; i don't have any advice to start us off because i am a disabled person who relies almost exclusively on pre-prepared meals to survive and can't buy groceries if they're not SNAP eligible, so i would really, really personally benefit from tips and advice.)
stay safe and take care of each other!
I keep thinking about all of the disabled activists and people before me who stranded themselves on the 4th floor of buildings for weeks and crawled up stairs and fought with airline staff and schools and doctors and refused to stop existing in the face of injustice and bigotry no matter how big and scary and hopeless it seemed. Every time I get angry and scared the protests that lead to the creation of the ADA pop up again and remind me that disabled people are so much fucking stronger than anyone has ever given us credit for, and I can't help but be proud of that. And I know not all disabled people feel like we should take pride in our disabilities and have flags or whatever, but I think not just living, but thriving, in spite of a world that wants us dead and gone, in the face of both illness and persecution, and how we've not only bought ourselves forward, but uplifted the disabled people around us, secured more equal futures for everyone who will come after, and truly changed the way so many abled people have seen us for the better is something to be damn fucking proud of.
We have always been here and we always will be, there will never be a world without disabled people because being disabled is not bad, it's a natural part of the human experience and yeah it sucks some times but even when it sucks we have fought to build beautiful, unique, happy lives with people, both like us and not, and that should be celebrated.
The first sign of human civilization is the healed femur. The body of the profoundly disabled person who would have needed help to even just eat being carefully laid to rest after decades of a full, happy life. The medicinal plants showing even before we were entirely human we were doing what we could to not just survive, but alleviate suffering while we're at it. Above everything, evolution selected not the baby who can walk and eat and be quiet, but the one that can ask for help.
Disabled people are not just angry cockroach motherfuckers who refuse to die, we are proof of humanity's HUMANITY. Proof that natural selection selected a species that takes care of each other. From healed femurs and medicinal plants to vaccines and IVs and insulin to now, we are driven to help one another, we are at our strongest when we don't leave our most vulnerable behind. And I am living proof of that. My mother is living proof of that. Every disabled and chronically and/or mentally ill person I know is living proof of that.
And I don't know about the rest of you, but will carry that shred of humanity's true nature inside me like it's my fucking soul. I am scared and angry and hurt, but I have a lifetime's experience being scared and angry, and I can shake off the kind of pain that would make Atlas crumble to dust like it's nothing but a stiff fucking breeze. Disabled people have always been here, turning fear and anger and pain into joy and beauty and connection, and I'm not going to let everyone who came before me down. I'm not going to give up. Not now, not ever.
It's okay if you're disabled and you've hit your limit, you're too scared and tired and hurt, I won't blame you. But I won't abandon you, either. I might not be able to right all of the wrongs in the world, but I'll be strong, I'll carry all of you with me, I will not give up.
As I've said before, society hates a cripple who won't die, so we must spite them and live anyway.
Please, live anyway. I know if anyone can, it's us.

wow! as a broke college kid, i wish there was a way to access books and movies as well as scientific articles that the new administration isn't necessarily a fan of. man. If only there was a free and trusted vpn ( up to 10 gigs of downloadable data) to use in conjunction with an anonymizing router (also free up to 10 gigs) to safely, er, permanently borrow media in an untraceable way as well as share files. Man, what's that browser that keeps your online activity anonymous? I'm awfully attached to firefox, personally. If only i had a browser extension that would throw a smoke screen over my browsing data while blocking ads at the same time.
what was i talking about? hmm. weird.
it's not great how much covid safety messaging has become crystallised around the rhetoric of like, "becoming disabled is the ultimate unthinkable calamity and will ruin your life" like avoiding infectious diseases is good (socially and individually) and it's true post-acute illnesses can be severe and life-altering. but i don't like seeing this attitude toward disability as though it's this unimaginable alien horror or as though you can guarantee you will avoid it by doing all the 'right' things. most of us will experience disability at some point in our lives, for many of us it will be permanent, it's not a moral failure or some kind of distant spectral threat but a present reality, and that needs to be integrated into any kind of public health advocacy or messaging. & not least because. people who are already disabled are also hearing that messaging and are also vulnerable to covid complications.
For those who have done it for at least a semester: is grad school a form of hazing for academics?

Showrunners in the year 2024: I only got 80 mil for the season, so best I can do is eight, thirty-minute episodes. and everything is greenscreen CGI. JMS in 1993: I'm gonna do 22 episode seasons with physical sets and practical effects that'll make you WEEP. and I'm gonna do it for less than you spent on groceries last year.
is there a word or term for Canada’s specific relationship to imperial violence? Like we are obviously actively supporting the genocide in Palestine right now and our history as a settler colonial state means our hands are always dripping with blood, but like I remember this same song and dance with Syrian refugees in 2015. Canada consistently paints itself as a humanitarian country that takes in refugees created by US foreign policy (that we support!), we are positioned as the peaceful multicultural benefactor in imperial wars who mops up the excesses by absorbing displaced populations and presenting this as a sensible, altruistic solution to the violence brown people inexplicably keep getting embroiled in for some reason who knows how that started? Canada also has a shrinking population, we have labour shortages, and it is accepted as common knowledge that we need more immigration to stabilise our economy. Of course I’m not arguing that Canada is backing US and Israeli violence to get more immigrants, that is conspiratorial and silly, but I’ve seen this fucking playbook before! Canada wants to constantly launder its international image of being one of peace and acceptance, of a country that is nothing like its brutal cousin to the south, and one of the big ways we do that is by “accepting more refugees” and pretending those people came from nowhere, they just sprung from the earth one day displaced and in need of a new home, happily given to them on stolen land by these wonderful white people. white saviourism feels like it doesn’t quite capture the breadth of what’s going on
Honestly with climate change it might only get worse. “Oh your Global South country has unlivable temperatures year round now? Come settle in Canada, we have room for everybody*!”

babylon 5 season 2 episode 20: the long, twilight struggle
So I guess I’m bi, which is cool. It’s been a little hard to figure out because I’ve only ever been with men (and am engaged to one). But, apparently, obsessively drafting a tragic sapphic folk-jukebox musical of Simon and Garfunkel’s greatest hits directly inspired by the pretty girl from high school choir who you sang Wicked duets with isn’t something straight girls, like, do? You can imagine my complete and utter surprise at this discovery
Bring 👏 back 👏 canes 👏
I’m tired of people looking at me with pity when instead I could have the air of a fashionable gentleman from the Victorian era or perhaps a Vaudeville performer
I have a mild-to-moderate disability (mobility issues from a bad accident) and I’ve asked two doctors about getting disability/handicap placards for parking. Keep in mind they would seriously change my life under specific circumstances and make it so I can begin to function like a non-disabled person of my age does (particularly when getting to work and class). The first doctor shamed me for daring to take spots away from “people who need it”, and put the fear of God in me about asking again. I recently approached my new PCP and after giving a carefully planned, revised spiel she just said “yep, these sound totally appropriate. I get that you might feel guilty but it’s easy to use it as needed”. Folks I cried. I just got them in the mail and it feels like everything has changed.
This scarcity mentality and scammer paranoia is real for any kind of welfare. Does it prioritize the most extreme cases, people who really do need it? Absolutely, so it’s not the worst thing. But it’s preventing more nuanced perspectives / discussions about disability, lack of access, poverty, or anything else that requires extra support or accommodations.
Anyone else got an Amy & Kif relationship? Like one is attractive, competent, vibrant, and likes pink - and the other one is you?
babylon 5 season 5 episode 18: the fall of centauri prime
Without fear, we are able to see more clearly our connections to others. Without fear, we have more room for understanding and compassion. Without fear, we are truly free.
Thich Nhat Hanh
Franky being a cyborg who rebuilt himself at least twice (we don’t know how many prototypes he went through during the timeskip) means that Robin probably says all types of weird shit about it like “It must have been a challenge to remove the flesh off your skull and move your organs around to build yourself” and Franky would probably be like “Yeah! 👍🏻🔆”
