meg watched as he walked away, pastry in hand, for longer than necessary, until the sound of the customer behind him clearing his throat demanded her attention and brought her back to reality. she has to force herself to refocus, cheeks near burning in embarrassment as she went about handling the next customer's order, all while trying to push her exchange with her first customer - logan, she corrected herself - out of her head.
he's just a customer, she told herself. and even if he wasn't - she was still freshly ripped out of hell, freshly trying to learn her new normal. the last thing she needed was a distraction that looked at her the way he did.
it wasn't until she sent the second customer on their way, not sure she had even made their order correctly, that her gaze wandered the small café. when she made eye contact with him again, it gave her a familiar surge of adrenaline: was he staring at her? it only took a few seconds, a hushed whisper of 'fuck' under her breath, before she realized she had completely forgotten the coffee she had promised. breaking eye contact with him all at once - the question of whether or not he was staring still lingering in the back of her mind - she disappeared behind tall shelving to make good on her promise, make good on the secret she had sworn him to.
less than a minute later - with her own heartbeat racing in her ears and thoughts completely unfocused from the job at hand, she walked out from behind the counter, bringing the coffee over to him. ' here you go. sorry about the wait. ' she offers him an easy smile, sets it down beside his laptop before she pulls away. she fidgets, arms folding across her chest for a moment before relaxing and dropping back to her sides, considering something, before she speaks again: ' it's meg, by the way. you know, in case you haven't seen my name tag. ' it comes across easy, like a joke.
what are you waiting for? a part of her wonders. it's not like he's going to invite you to sit down. and still she continues talking: ' i figured telling you my name would make us even. so... logan, huh? ' shut up, she tells herself, bites the inside of her mouth; doesn't realize how long it's been since she's carried a normal conversation that she suddenly feels anything but normal. ' i'll let you work. but now that we're on a first-name basis, you know who to ask if you need another caffeine fix. '
