Of the four vertical gouache studies I did that day, I think this was the most challenging. Mainly because it doesn’t have much to ground it in a location and so for a long portion of the process it looked like a lot of formless blobs. It was one of those pieces where you just have to trust the process and look for the next best step to get you towards your vision. I’m quite pleased with the result and glad I stuck with it!

This piece was made for the 22nd day of i*ktober back in 2017 for the video game Child of Light, which had these neat watercolor effects to the gameplay. Separating the planes by opacity of the inks is one of my favorite techniques and, as always, I love painting the skies.

This is probably my favorite of the four vertical gouache studies. Mostly based on color. I do love doing sunset clouds on a blue sky; the contrast and simplicity go a long way.
