Friends, A TodoMomo Oneshot
“It’s snowing! It’s snowing!!” Uraraka Ochaco pressed her face against the glass of 1-A’s classroom. Most of the other classmates followed suit, watching the first few snowflakes fall and hit the ground. It had been a few weeks after the whole 1-A vs 1-B battle so everyone was more or less re-energised and ready for the upcoming jolly season. Todoroki stood back as he watched his other classmates fawn over the snow. Since he has the “half-cold” quirk, he was no stranger to the snow.
“Oh, what’s wrong, Todoroki?” the class president, Iida Tenya approached and asked him.
“Nothing really.”
“If there’s something bothering you, or there’s a request you’d like to make, we could help you! We’re friends after all!” Another one of his classmates, and the vice-president of 1-A, Yaoyorozu Momo, cheerfully said, in an attempt to find out what was on her mind.
“Friends, huh?” Todoroki muttered to himself.
“It’s nothing,” he replied, as he turned to walk away while looking at the ground.
“Are you sure? You don’t seem okay! As a friend it’s my duty to-”
“I said it’s nothing!” Todoroki lashed out.
Taken aback by his sudden anger, Yaoyorozu’s eyes widened. She clutched her chest as her heart palpitated within her. The whole class has turned around and stared at the trio. Clearly they weren’t interested in the snow anymore.
“Todoroki! How could you?! Yaoyorozu was just trying to help you! How dare you treat her like this?!” Iida stood up for her. Gritting his teeth, Todoroki clenched his fist and walked off. The other members of class 1-A surrounded Yaoyorozu, comforting her by putting an arm on her shoulders or saying things like
“Why’s he such a jerk today?”
“It’s okay Yaomomo, maybe he’s just feeling unwell.”
Yaoyorozu just kept to herself though. She wrapped her left hand over her right fist and pressed against her ample chest, heart still palpitating. She cared for Todoroki, after all, he was the one that had boosted her self-esteem during the end-of-term test and they had already built a friendly rivalry. Would it always be awkward whenever they talked now? Yaoyorozu didn’t want that. After all, she considered Todoroki as a very good friend.
With hands in his pockets, Todoroki roamed the hallways of U.A. All the other students scurried about their business, carrying books and chit-chatting. Todoroki didn’t bother to even look at them though, in that moment right then and there, they were just beings that take up space. Nothing else. Suddenly, there was a ‘thump!’ followed by an ‘UwAAAH!’ apparently, he had walked right into one of his cohort mates, Yosetsu Awase. Todoroki recognized him as ‘The guy that saved Yaoyorozu that time at the training camp.’ When he visited Yaoyorozu, Midoriya and the others after the attack, he often caught glimpses of them talking. After she got discharged though, he also began to notice that Awase would often approach her for tutoring. He didn’t like that one bit.
“Ah… Hey! You’re Todoroki aren’t you!” Awase called out to him. “Geeze, watch where you’re walking, would’ya?”
“...Sorry. I was… distracted…” Todoroki replied, avoiding eye contact. As he helped Awase get back on his feet, he noticed a small pink-colored package next to him.
“That’s for Yaoyorozu. She’s been helping me so much these past few months so… I thought I’d get her something for Christmas.”
“I don’t think she’s in the mood to be happy now.”
“Huh? Why? Did something happen or…?”
Todoroki clenched his teeth. Was this guy an idiot or something?
“Just leave her alone,” he stated, before walking off.
Todoroki continued to walk around the school compound. He made an intelligent guess that most of his classmates would be at the communal spaces in the dormitory discussing him earlier situation and he didn’t want to walk in on them gossiping about him. He didn’t feel like roaming around any shopping district either, or visiting his mother since it would probably be after curfew by the time he got back to the dorm. As such, he ended up at the side of the school, where small, gentle snowflakes landed on his shoulder. Just then he’d received a call.
‘Kirishima? Why would he call?’ he thought to himself.
“Hello?” Todoroki picked up.
“Hey! It’s Awase by the way!” the voice replied. “I ran into Kirishima and asked him about Yaoyorozu. So he lent me his phone to call ya!” What did this guy want from him? Was Yaoyorozu’s attention already not enough? Had this guy had to keep talking about the one thing that he so desperately wanted?
“Anyway, I kinda heard what happened between you and Yaoyorozu. And right now she’s looking for you… so…” Just for a moment, there was silence between the two. It was pretty obvious by now that they had both liked the same girl. How is it possible to uphold a conversation with a romantic rival?
“Don’t go hurting her again, you hear me? If you do, I’ll kill you...okay?!” Afterwards, he hung up. These words hit Todoroki like a spear. He had hurt Yaoyorozu? All this time he thought that Yaoyorozu was the one hurting him. By using terms like ‘friends’ as to imply that she saw him as a ‘friend’ and nothing else. To tell everyone that she had 0 feelings for him, or to indirectly tell him that she wasn’t interested in him. But if Todoroki was right, then what does Awase mean?
“Todoroki!”
He didn’t need to turn around to recognize that sweet melodious voice that belonged to the classmate he fancied. As he took one step away from her, to create a new footprint in the soft layer of snow, she caught his attention again. This time not with words, but sniffles.
“I- I’m so sorry, Todoroki…” He stopped mid-step as he listened to her drowning words under the snowy sky.
“I shouldn’t have assumed that you were sad-, I just…” Right then and there, her tiny sniffles turned into a full-blown bawl. She used her palms and covered her face, her tears flowing out of her hands as she constantly gasped for air while breathing out tears, sniffling once every now and then.
“I really care for you! Todoroki! It pains me to see you when you’re upset...or ...mad or unhappy in general!” She struggled to find words. Words that could pierce through Todoroki’s cold exterior. Words that could make him realise that there are always people around for him. Words that could open his eyes.
Seconds later, she felt what seemed like a warm blanket enveloping her. Todoroki’s strong, muscular arms wrapped around Yaoyorozu’s frame. He’d activated his quirk, just a little bit, as to keep her warm and shield her from the melting snow that could wet her clothes and cause her to catch a cold. Her eyes widened. She then hung her arms around Todoroki’s neck, nuzzling into his collarbone. Todoroki’s grip tightened. He honestly didn’t mind staying in that position forever. Taking advantage of their embrace, Todoroki spoke softly into her ear.
“Yaoyorozu, I- I’m sorry too. I’m sorry for hurting you. I… Sometime ago, I fell for you. But I didn’t really say anything. So when Awase and you became better friends, I was jealous.”
Todoroki gulped.
“I’m sorry. I’ve became greedy. I don’t want you to just see me as a friend. I want you to see me as so much more. I- I’ve really fallen for you, Momo.”
Yaoyorozu released her arms and pulled back to look at Todoroki’s embarrassed face. Like always, he avoided eye contact with her. Her hand reached out and cupped the left side of his face. Her gentle fingers glided over his scar and curved over his earlobe.
“I’ve fallen for you too, Shouto. Ever since the end-of-term test,” She looked like she wanted to say something else, but her confession was enough for Shouto. His right hand slid behind her head and he pulled her in for a kiss.
