I probably wouldn’t be posting about any of this if it weren’t for the alarming reaction I’m seeing from people online and in real life. Again, if this was your run-of-the-mill Hollywood abuse trial, I would share my sympathies for Amber and my hatred for Johnny and move on with my life. But people are acting and speaking about this case and the woman involved in a way that warrants serious concern. I was at Publix last Thursday (my favorite place on the planet) and I’m standing in line while this lady is scanning frozen Super Pretzels I was buying for my grandma, and she goes “I wish I was at home right now so I could be listening to the Johnny Depp trial. That evil woman is going to get what’s coming to her. She is so vindictive” which was pretty tame compared to things I’ve seen online, but it’s like why the fuck is my grocer talking to me about the Johnny Depp trial? I literally don’t have any other social media aside from this and a defunct Instagram account and no matter how many times I select “not interested” on the dozens of recommended ‘Johnny laughing in court’ or ‘Johnny with sick kids in hospital’ videos, I keep having to scroll past them. And even then I wouldn’t really care except for the fact that when you open the comments section of those videos it is filled with the most vicious and brutal language I’ve seen directed towards a famous woman since…I can’t even think of a good previous example. This is just a really fucked up situation and it has nothing to do with intimate partner violence and everything to do with misogny and general cruelty.

It’s interesting that Johnny supporters are obsessed with new age wokeism and body positivity (“how dare Amber call him old and out of shape!”), on top of the fact that they skew more “left” on paper and tend to proudly display their LGBTQIA+ label of the week in their bios considering his rampant history of racism, homophobia, misogyny, pedophilia, etc. Like how do they justify his go-to insults being slurs, “fat ass”, “flabby ass Amber”, and “lesbian camp counselor”? Their refusal to acknowledge that one of the great loves of Johnny’s life was a high schooler he dated when he was pushing 30 is insane because you know this is the #FreeAaronTaylorJohnson crowd. All personal morals go out the window when your teenage centerfold’s image is at stake. What impresses me most about the cult of famous men is that they will consistently alienate and antagonize their target demographic and it only makes fans love them more. It’s some insane cracked out version of textbook negging and emotional manipulation. Some of these people will never stop seeing life in shades of varsity jackets and homecoming dances. To them it will always be: cruel handsome jock = misunderstood, his pretty blonde girlfriend = evil whore.

It’s just crazy because I literally don’t actually care about celebrity goings-ons outside of like 4 people who I google weekly and keep tabs on but the fact that people are actively publicly laughing about, making light of, yas queening Johnny’s violent misogynistic texts and actions is so hard to stomach like I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about feminism (LDR interested in intergalactic pursuits etc) but people really hate women lol. Like a lot.

I hate how so many people on here and Twitter have been rolling their eyes at this situation and making snarky comments about how they “don’t care about celebrity tabloid drama” as if that’s all this is and not a blatant anti-feminist/#MeToo backlash… between this and the insane response to that Megan thee stallion interview we’re witnessing a wave of explicit misogyny reminiscent of the Obama backlash/Trump momentum in 2015/2016, and if you think you’re above acknowledging it because it involves “celebrities” (as if that’s the reason this blew up to the magnitude it has) then you might as well just shut up. If you don’t think the way Amber, Megan, et al. are being discussed has social and political implications then idk what to tell you.

Mind you this isn’t a stretch of a comparison at all. People forget that when OJ was first arrested for his wife Nicole’s murder, he told cops that he was the victim of abuse - that she had hit him. He recounted a domestic violence incident years earlier, in 1989, when he’d been arrested for assaulting Nicole. He claimed that she’d been the aggressor - she’d been drinking and picking a fight. He’d merely “wrestled” her to the ground to subdue her, to stop her from hitting him (something Johnny would similarly allege in court this week when he was questioned abut a December 2015 incident where he admitted, on tape, to headbutting Amber; he insists he was simply trying to stop her from hitting him and put her in a “bear hug” and that their foreheads touched. Nothing more). He said the police didn’t believe him since he was a man. And like Johnny, O.J. would allege throughout the criminal and civil cases surrounding his wife’s murder that she’d been lying about being abused, that she pulled a Gone Girl: Photos of her with bruises? Just makeup. Diary entries where she recounted the abuse she suffered? They were concocted to void their prenup.

So what’s the difference here? Is it that Amber lived and Nicole didn’t? Or is it that Edward Scissorhands had more of an impact on people than Naked Gun

hell yes you should cover Johnny Depp's case, I feel like I'm going crazy reading Twitter, saying that Johnny is a poor sad domestic abuse victim, when the news that I've read pretty much confirmed that he abused her. Amber isn't a perfect victim but I am tired of reading people treating Depp like a widdle baby that did nothing wrong.

I’m working on a post recapping the trial thus far, and to make sure it’s as thorough as possible I’m going back and watching the full days of court, given a lot happens that doesn’t make its way onto Twitter. By the time it’s up I think I’ll probably be a week or so behind, but I don’t think you guys are counting on me for immediacy as much as you are for research and analysis.

But I just want to say in regard to your comment that Amber isn’t the “perfect victim,” no one - no one - is ever the perfect victim. I encourage every person who has to introduce a caveat to their defense of Amber (“Amber’s messy, but...”) to pause and take a moment to consider how their own actions and behaviors would look if they were placed under the microscopic glare of social media. We’ve all said and done stupid, regrettable things. We’ve all lost our cool in the heat of the moment. That shouldn’t make us any less worthy of compassion and support, especially when stacked against the psychotic, blood-thirsty social media campaign against her. There’s nothing Amber’s done that’s made me think of her as anything less than human; flaws are part of that package, we’d be kidding ourselves if we thought otherwise.

And this isn’t to rag on you Anon, I know you meant well, but I’ve seen so many of those sort of comments this past week from the few people sticking up for Amber and it’s frustrating. Whether we’d like to admit or not, we’re all one public transgression away from landing on the social media ‘shit list.’ What counts is the severity of those actions and how we learn from them.

And on a side note, while I have your guys’ attention, if you can keep an eye out on Twitter, TikTok, and other platforms for some of the more egregious examples of bias towards Depp, I’d appreciate it. You can submit anything you find here or just drop me a message. A good example of what I’m talking about is the celebrity gossip Instagram DeuxMoi recently encouraging its followers to submit their encounters with Amber or Johnny, and when stories about Amber seeming standoffish at a party and drinking a lot of wine were submitted, they were published, but a story someone else submitted of Johnny being aggressive with staff at an event wasn’t. When the person who submitted the Johnny story confronted them about it, D.M. bizarrely responded that they would not share the story because Johnny’s ‘in the midst of a trial where he’s being accused of abuse’ - plus, they said, they doubted the story was ‘real’ (since D.M. apparently has a reputation for accurate, hard-hitting journalism - who knew!).

I’ve been following it. I haven’t been watching the courtroom streams but I’ve been keeping up with the day-to-day via reporters on Twitter. Needless to say it’s a trainwreck so far. This first week, bar jury selection on Monday, was Depp’s team presenting their case and calling witnesses, who despite being chosen to testify in Johnny’s defense somehow managed to make him look worse (if that’s possible). First his sister testified that she’d never been aware of his drug problem, despite sending him a text message in 2014 pleading with him to stop the “coke” and “pills” (her explanation? “I don’t recall”). Then on Wednesday Johnny’s longtime friend Isaac Baruch, whom he grew up with and who by his own admission lives rent-free in a penthouse apartment Johnny owns, went on a weepy spiel about how Amber ruined Johnny’s life before admitting that one of the only times he’d seen them argue it was Johnny who appeared to be the aggressor, screaming at Amber over the phone, and confirmed a text Johnny had sent him saying that he hoped Amber's “rotting corpse is decomposing in the fucking trunk of a Honda Civic” (reminiscent of Johnny’s texts with his pal Paul Bettany joking about raping Amber’s “burnt corpse”). And finally on Thursday a marriage counselor called by Johnny’s side stated plainly that when Amber struck Johnny, she was reacting to the abuse he started - “Always hitting him back was a point of pride [for Amber]” - and quoted Johnny as saying Amber “gave as good as she got.” And if that didn’t drive the point home, when asked if Johnny was violent with Amber, the counselor said yes. Yes. Straight from his own witness.

Mind you, he’s suing Amber for defamation - this Virginia lawsuit is over an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018 saying she was a victim of domestic abuse - yet only a week into the trial one of his own witnesses confirmed he abused her. I don’t know how much he’s paying his lawyers, but it’s too much. It’s hard to believe this is the same guy Hollywood tried to convince us was an intellectual artiste back in the 2000s because he spoke French and wore scarves. He’s a fucking moron. And to top it off, he’s spent some of this past week in court sleeping and giggling.

If people are interested, I could make an updates post for the rest of the trial. It’s supposed to last six weeks. I know it’s been a while since I’ve covered the case on here, and I’ve wanted to post about it again, I just haven’t gotten around to it. Early last year I worked with someone to draft an entire timeline of Johnny and Amber’s relationship and the abuse claims, hoping to post it on here when it was done. It ended up being a little under 200 pages, each and every allegation cross-referenced and cited with the appropriate witness statements, photos, videos, etc. I figured that was probably a bit too much for any one person to read, though, so if I ever get around to trimming it, I’ll share it here - but that probably won’t be for some time. However, if any journalists happen to be reading this and would like to peek through it for stories they’re putting together, feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) and I’ll share the link. It’s probably the rare occasion I don’t mind people lifting my work given there’s so much misinformation - or disinformation, rather - about the case.

The reason why the Depp vs Heard case is so fascinating and sets such a scary precedent is this is the first time I've seen a non-political figure use political propaganda like this to attack a single person. Depp and his team are basically using the "firehose of falsehood" model to confuse the public i.e. sending out many lies, half-truths and falsehoods that it becomes genuinely difficult to keep up with or get the stories straight. This was why Depp's Putin-chummy lawyer was banned from the trial for leaking evidence (including the out-of-context sliced-up recording of Amber saying she hit Johnny which has been the main source of her vilification though for example there is also a recording of Johnny admitting to headbutting Amber which has gotten far less circulation).

This is why single men should not have more money then small countries. The repercussions are alarming and limitless.
