I think that one of the best things about mdzs is how hopeful the ending is.
Like, we still have that funny feeling from hearing about people talk trash about JGY. But the hope is not in LWJ and WWX, it’s in the children.
Jin Ling grew up with his father’s legacy hanging over his head and the responsibility that he was supposed to avenge his mother and father. But in the end he accepts not just the man who killed his father, but the knife (Wen Ning) that did it as well.
Lan Jingyi is a Lan, but he’s not like the other Lans, and he got that way under LWJ’s tutelage.
Precious Lan Yuan, the last of the Wens, showing how heritage doesn’t taint. He’s such a good boy I love him.
Then the other juniors, be they named or no. Not all of them are good! The Jin can be bullies but now they’re under new management. Ouyang Zizhen may not be an heir (lots of big siblings) but he’s clever and good.
And while NHS (my SON) might not be a good man, he’s not bad, and is more likely to help his friends, who are good.
The grandparents may have fucked everything up, making the parents have to fight a war, but there’s hope for the children.
As a massive proponent for more focus on familial relationships in media I am getting fed by MDZS and the Untamed. You’ve got Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, one of the most tragic depictions of two brothers with a complex but strong bond disintegrating into resentment that I have ever seen, of fraternal jealousy and insecurity as a consequence of both being parented badly but in very different ways. Jiang Yanli haunting the narrative.
Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang and the parentification that ends up hurting both them, all that rage that comes from that pressure and need to protect, that vicious loyalty being a given despite it all. Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen having a good but somehow distant relationship that isn’t quite what it ought to be despite the fact they clearly care immensely for each other. Wen Qing and Wen Ning and the doomed nature of it all.
Jin Ling is terrified of his uncle, who’s notoriously short tempered and regularly threatens to break his legs, but is shocked at the notion that he’d ever have struck him because he hasn’t, not once. Wei Wuxian teaching him how to fight bullies and worrying that he doesn’t have friends, after knowing him a few months and getting into physical fights with him most of the times they’ve interacted.
Lan Sizhui. I’m not even getting into it right now but holy fuck.
The love. There’s so much love and they don’t all know it, or want it, but it’s integral to understanding the story that you know it’s always there. This might be fundamentally a romance but it feels like it was written with families very much front and centre and it is breaking my heart.
do not unfollow me one day i will be your 30 year old mutual
I've been having some very Nie Huaisang thoughts at work lately
A-Yuan meets a grumpy grape.
Just some quick designs. One day I'll settle one one, but it is not this day.
I laughed to hard at this fucking thing.
So I follow N. D. Stevenson (comics writer and animator, most famous for Nimona and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) and his husband Lee Ostertag (also a comics writer and animator) on Instagram. When I started following them, they were both publicly presenting as women, and then a few years ago N. D. came out as transmasc nonbinary, and then earlier this year Lee also came out as transmasc. Anyway this is all setup to say that Lee had the chance to make the funniest post of all time and he took it:
Absolutely iconic.
I want to throw in that part of the context behind this meme was N.D. talking about how he sometimes gets hatemail for marrying a man as a former lesbian, and how many people seem to think he divorced his wife.
I have not managed to find anyone who thinks that in the wild, but it is so damn funny.
