Yeehaw!
Look back at the early days of PlayStation and its ambitious, innovative and complicated father
Earlier this year, Fila released official Pokémon sneakers in South Korea. They looked great, I thought. Fila now has a line of PUBG gear for the country. It seems alright. I guess.
Bethesda is suing Warner Bros. and Behaviour Interactive over the new Westworld video game which it claims copies parts of 2015’s Fallout Shelter, according to court documents filed with the U.S. District Court for Maryland.
We’re conditioned to expect console manufacturers to be bitter rivals, constantly at each other’s throats in a battle for market supremacy. But sometimes, the enemy of an enemy can be a friend. We got a reminder during E3 that the PS4, unlike most other platforms on Earth, does not support crossplay between consoles. That means that if you have an Xbox One, and a friend of yours has a PS4, and you both want to play the same game together, you can’t.
There are a hell of a lot of ways to win a Fortnite game, but the most reliable strat has gotten a little too reliable, says publisher Epic Games. In a blog post yesterday, Epic explained that they’ll be shaking things up a little, so players will need to get a little more resourceful.
At Vidcon yesterday, YouTube announced new ways creators can make money and grow their communities on the platform. These changes include channel memberships, merchandise, and the ability to run pre-recorded videos as a “live moment” that creators and fans can watch together.
When hero shooter Paladins announced a battle royale mode, it felt a bit like a tacked on extra to a game struggling for identity. That battle royale mode has transformed into a standalone game, Realm Royale. While it’s still in alpha and rough around the edges, Realm Royale has a few good ideas that could help it stand out in the growing crowd. In a lot of ways, Realm Royale feels like an off-brand Fortnite Battle Royale. The world is colorful, shooting is snappy and most weapons fire hitscan projectiles that strike targets instantly. A tiered loot system allows players to upgrade their weapons and equipment with higher quality versions. Playing Realm Royale, there’s a familiar trend towards the fast pace that makes Fortnite so popular.
Even though you probably quit playing Pokémon Go a while ago, thousands of people still “catch ‘em all” in cities across the U.S. And you might soon see a slight uptick of players where you live, because developer Niantic is (finally) adding Pokémon trading to the game, only two years after its release. Starting this week, you can add friends on Pokémon Go, see their activity on a news feed and, most importantly, exchange Pokémon and certain items with nearby players. However, there are a few limitations. At the moment, only those level 40 and above are able to access social features within Pokémon Go, though it’s unclear if this policy is indefinite or temporary. Niantic notes on its site that trades only require players be at level 10.
Do you love video games and hate having money? Are you ambivalent on the idea of ever getting around to actually playing those video games? Well, GOOD NEWS: it’s Steam summer sale time.
When Bandai Namco revealed Jump Force, a crossover fighting game pitting Dragon Ball villain Frieza against Naruto himself, manga fans went berserk. It wasn’t that the headlining manga stars looked like they were plucked from the pages of Shonen Jump. They don’t. In Jump Force, they appear as living action figures pummeling the crap out of each other in 3D meatspace.
Before I knew anything else about it, I knew My Friend Pedro looked cool. I first came across the solo-developed indie game while going through the Screenshot Saturday hashtag on Twitter several years ago. Among all of the images of games in development shared by their makers was a masked man pirouetting through the air while dual-wielding pistols and unloading them with perfect precision. My Friend Pedro is full of so many cool moments like these that creator Victor Agren made the game automatically generate GIFs that can be shared online while you’re playing it. Not only does My Friend Pedro look really cool, it wants to make you feel really cool as well.
This year’s E3 looks were all about one thing: cool jackets. The game offerings at E3 this year were kind of slim. While I saw a lot of things I was excited about, it seemed like too few games are actually going to be playable soon, and many of them are hypothetical at best. The one thing I couldn’t get over, though, is how badly I wanted everyone’s jackets. Take Devil May Cry 5, for example. I absolutely love this black on black look Nero is sporting, especially with his metal arm.
Is Capcom planning a Devil May Cry 5 reveal at E3 2018? Capcom has registered a domain name for Devil May Cry 5, suggesting an E3 reveal could be on the way. The news comes from a DMC Discord server (via ResetEra), which spotted the domain name registered by a third party company, GMO Internet Group. It suggests that an E3 reveal of the title could be imminent. GMO has registered other domains on Capcom's behalf, including Monster Hunter: World, Resident Evil 7 and, more recently, updated the Resident Evil 2 domain name.
King James returns to the cover of the twentieth installment in the NBA 2K19 franchise. Cleveland Cavaliers' and NBA legend LeBron James is the cover athlete of the 20th Anniversary Edition of the NBA 2K franchise. James last appeared on the cover of NBA 2K14 as a member of the Miami Heat. The Anniversary Edition has "exclusive James themed content and items," and can be played beginning on September 7, four days ahead of NBA 2K19's official release.
Huge fan-service titles seem ripe for discussion Square Enix is back for E3 2018, and apparently for very good reasons. The publisher last did a showcase for its wares in 2015, and while this time it won’t be doing a traditional stage event, there is much to talk about, beginning with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This is what we expect from Square Enix’s E3 Showcase, which will be a pre-recorded video airing Monday, June 11 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET.
