I forgot how much healthier your hair gets after just a little trim
hey girls. I know it's very scary. I know that cutting off any of your hair sounds like what they did to you when you were still a boy. But please, go to a salon. Get your hair washed nicely, and get all you split and dead ends trimmed off. You will thank me it's super good for you
I've always been very reluctant to see a hairdresser, because. Yeah. It's really scary! You have to go there, and verbalize what you want, and then you have to sit while your hair gets cut. Which, is really fucking scary for us! But when you get done there, and when you look in the mirror, you're gonna look so pretty. And then you'll go back, in a couple months or so. And it'll still be kinda scary, but not as scary as it was. And your hair will be ice and healthy again and you get to talk to your hairdresser. And then you show up again, and again, and again, and then the most amazing thing happens while you don't even realize it. The scissors aren't scary anymore, and you look very pretty.
YOU are a pretty girl, but with lots of dead hair nobody taught you how to take care of, and you were made scared to take care of it. But please hold my hand. You're going to look so very beautiful.

You know as an American born in the late 90s I’ve watched my country blow up foreigners on tv supposedly in the interest of national security since I was a toddler but quite frankly we live on a natural fortress of a continent with friendly nations to our north and south and have been attacked on our own soil literally two times in the past hundred years and we have military bases on every inhabited continent on earth. It’s never made sense to do these things for “national security”. It never will make sense unless you value the shareholders of weapons companies over the lives of children. And apparently a concerning amount of people do.
i am a truther in the twins one day changing their hairstyles. And by that I mean alisaie cutting her hair short cause i know she would look great and alphinaud keeping his long in a pretty ponytail.
of course this means squeenix allowing them to grow up. which is bound to happen….eventually….maybe..

so back when my little brother was in high school, my mom went as a chaperone for their senior year field trip to an amusement park. which, you know, brave move to volunteer to supervise a bunch of high school seniors let loose in a wonderland of rollercoasters and sugar
my brother and his friends in this field trip group were truly great kids. but they were not above run of the mill teenage boy shenanigans. it’s the end of senior year, you and all your buddies are at the amusement park, you’re naturally going to want to act like a complete moron
there was one kid in the group who was especially prone to goofing around. committed to the bit, some may say. my mom knew that if nonsense was going to break out, he’d likely be at the center of it
so she goes up to this kid at the very start of the trip and says “hey, i’m kinda worried about this chaperoning thing. this might be a lot to ask, but can you help me keep an eye on everyone? you wouldn’t have to do anything big, just be an extra set of eyes for me.”
friends, this kid proceeded to run their field trip group like the fucking us marines. everyone is at the meet up spots at the designated time. everyone waits in line for the rides like a bunch of boy scouts. the second the horseplay gets too out of hand, this kid is getting it back under control
it’s incredible how differently people act based on the expectations you set. instead of going to this kid and saying “hey, i know you’re trouble, so i’ve got my eye on you,” my mom went “hey, i know you have influence in your peer group, so i think you can help me.”
treat someone like a problem, they’ll act like a problem. but give people a chance to help, make them feel important, and they usually rise far above the occasion. it was a stroke of genius that i’m honestly still in awe of
keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don't even get paid for it
a misogynistic society is so threatened by the concept of trans women - women that "had the opportunity" to be privileged men and chose not to - that they start making up privileges women have in order to explain why trans women exist. going into womens restrooms isnt a privilege, playing womens sports isnt a privilege, lesbianism isnt a privilege, yet they present them as such to try and explain why trans women are women for nefarious reasons. a misogynistic society will never understand that trans women have no ulterior motive for being women
i can't stop thinking about these lines (the first is from ARR, the second is from the Doman Reconstruction) indicating that the world outside Garlemald doesn't have clocks.
obviously we have clocks as housing items. but i think it's easier for me to justify housing items being non-canon than to think that clocks are mass-produced household items, yet we meet multiple people who aren't even familiar with the concept??? the game also uses the phrase "around the clock" at least once, but i think that's just as likely an oversight as anything meaningful, whereas the above lines are unmistakably intentional.
so like... i researched the history of clocks for this. the Prague Astronomical Clock was installed in 1410. the minute hand was invented in 1577 specifically to aid in stargazing, which is something you'd think at least the Shalayans would have thought of, and presumably brought to Eorzea with the colony??? especially since we know they have a complex history of telescopes, the first of which in real life was invented in 1608.
then again, Sharlayan simultaneously barely has a grasp on heliocentrism and has built a spaceship, so maybe that disparity is a feature and not a bug.
after all, knowledge across the Source being lost and scattered over the passing of ages due to the Calamities is a recurring theme...
i guess it's also possible the Sharlayans have clocks and they haven't made it to Eorzea or the Far East. but if so, it's a damn shame they don't have a giant astronomical clock in the middle of the Old Sharlayan.
SHARLAYAN CLOCKS CONFIRMED
oh? another Eorzean who doesn't know what clocks are, you say???
Fun fact: if you, as an adult, tell miserable children that their youth is the best that life will ever be, and that it's all just downhill from there, there's a percentage of them who will hear this and think "well, I guess I better kill myself before that happens." And a certain percentage of those will proceed to do that and succeed.
Anyway what I'm saying is that any time you feel tempted to say that, you should instead consider shutting the fuck up. Just because you peaked at 16 doesn't mean anyone else did. Most peoples' lives get better than that.
