my interpretation of champagne problems is that it’s a gay song about a girl who is dating a guy while repressing her sexuality and after years of being together he proposes but she can’t marry him because she knows she’s lying to herself and she’s never been able to tell him but she just cant commit the rest of her life this guy and she “didn’t give a reason” because she couldn’t come out and even though everyone thinks she broke him and she’s “fucked in the head” and she’s meant for a “mad house” in reality “she never was ready” because she’s gay and scared and that’s why the ending of the song is her saying she hopes he finds someone great. because she didnt want to hurt him and she wants him to have an amazing life, but she knows she will never be satisfied with him so she can’t give him that life and walks away entirely
