See, I’m five years into adulthood. I have a college degree (a few in fact), a car, insurance payments, a job, yada yada. I ostensibly joined the Grown Up Club a few years back.

But, having grown up with a number of undiagnosed disorders and mental illnesses, I never learned a healthy style of self-talk.

If I’m honest, between depression and anxiety, the way I grew up talking to myself was abusive. I’m not kidding; if the things I thought to and about myself were said aloud to someone else, it would be considered verbal and emotional abuse.

So this idea of treating myself like a small child? With the same loving firmness and compassion?

This is a radical idea for me.

This is me learning to stop those abusive thought patterns, and talk to myself in a kinder, healthier way.

And it doesn’t have much to do with adulthood. I know adults who have treated themselves unkindly this way for many years. A healthy relationship with yourself doesn’t just sprout once you’re an adult; you have to develop it.

Those are my thoughts anyway. I hope they make sense.

You don’t mysteriously just heal and become whole from your past when you reach a certain age X. Healing and growing is an intentional process.

Not to mention that you can get traumatized and hurt when you are an adult! It’s always the right time to learn how to help yourself to heal with loving ways.

oh btw also when it comes to fatphobia one of the most insidious lies that society tells fat people is that losing weight is “easy” and “totally doable” if you just commit yourself to it. literally nothing is harder than losing weight when your body doesn’t want you to. the entire act of weight loss is based on the idea that you need to burn more than you consume, essentially that you need to be starving yourself for a number of weeks or months to get yourself down to a weight that is often unnatural for your body to maintain. the people telling these lies are mostly skinny people who have never even had to lose weight to fit into society’s standards of an acceptable person in their lives. to them, “it’s easy to lose weight” really means “it’s easy to be skinny, because i am skinny and i didn’t have to work at all to become this way.” i can tell you rn there is not a fat person alive who hasn’t attempted to lose weight once in their lives and realized it is one of the most difficult, unhealthy, and unnatural processes you can try to put yourself through. skinny ppl would do well to remember this when lecturing fat people on their supposed “health” while having to make no real effort to maintain their own size due in large part to genetics alone.

I cannot emphasize enough that it didn't have to be like this. The graphs for most other countries look nothing like this.

You have to wear a mask whenever you're outside the house. You have to limit your time in public as much as you can. If it's accessible to you, you have to get tested.

You have to call your representatives and demand that people have their paychecks secured or their unemployment payments continued so that 20 million people don't become homeless due to the circumstances of a pandemic which are entirely out of their control.

It didn't have to be like this.

Just a reminder that if you’re in the US and you’re expecting a tipped worker to risk their life for you - wait staff, delivery drivers, etc. - you need to be wearing a mask, observing safe distance, and tipping a MINIMUM of 25% - ideally above 30% if at all humanly possible.

If you’re financially comfortable and especially if you’re going to indoor restaurants, consider tipping 50-100%.

These low-paid workers who have no choice about risking infection deserve at least a little bit of a cushion to help them out in the eventuality that they DO catch the new coronavirus and have to miss shifts or pay exorbitant medical bills.

The problem with forcibly seizing the assets of, say, Jeff Bezos is that his net worth of $161 billion does not mean he has that in cash. That’s the worth of everything he owns, including stock in his own company.

And the problem with seizing THAT is that it isn’t real. It’s based on confidence and what people might conceivably pay for it. And if you just seize it, that confidence tanks. And then that wealth evaporates.

The problem with capitalism isn’t that there’s a bunch of old dudes sitting on hoards of cash. It’s that they’ve collectively created a system by which they have ludicrous social and economic power based on the PROMISE of hoards of cash. That don’t exist. They have created a social stratum in which debt is money.

That’s why the exhortation is to SEIZE THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION, not GO GRAB ALL THE MONEY. Because the money isn’t real, and the need to go out and get it is blinding people to the fact that it doesn’t need to exist.
