an extremely private, independent, & mutuals - only roleplay blog for Eva Stratt from Project Hail Mary. written by Dawn ( she / her, EST ).
Growl after growl after growl. The officials on high moved to keep her contained, swearing as they did so at her temperament. Every cable around the meat of her stretched, the plates of armor to keep her contained groaned with the swelling of her, and the vocalizations she made rolled through the air.
— or so she thought, if one could call it thinking. — or so she knew, if one could know anything like this.
Grief. How strange and human it was.
The gigantic, gold - clad unit didn't calm until she sensed something familiar. How much of her tantrum was apparent to the outside world, she wasn't sure. His eyes, though, went through the metal and meat, and they saw her soul. Just to have him near ...
Light flickered in the eyes of the suspended unit, proof of an understanding where there should have been none. Eva, the once - life within, felt her soul hum. Kaworu made the pain brought on by her shreds of human - ness dissipate. He brought about a feeling of wholeness that nothing else did.
@signofourtimes, unprompted.
Beautiful, golden Evangelion Unit-05. The Lilin called it a Hail Mary-- some last ditch effort to perfect the S2 Engine technology for their use, Kaworu learned. While Unit-01 had consumed one of his kind
--his child, really. One that came from him, really. A piece of him forever lost to the brutal war for existence, really, rendering him incomplete--
to attain godhood, Unit-05 was the first one to be born into it. Kaworu had a vague notion of what the Lilin thought was god; as he stepped closer to Unit-05, however, he couldn't think of it as anything other than a suffering creature. Lilin souls weren't meant to merge with his flesh like this to begin with, and the one trapped inside it didn't even have the good grace to have its own appearance.
(On its own merit, Unit-01 had become god. Unit-05 was a cheap, glittering imitation.)
The NERV officers, perplexed at how to contain the machine, stepped aside when Kaworu asked. He'd told them once before that their intervention was unnecessary, but the Lilin were stubborn things. It was hard not to love them for it.
And as he sat in his usual spot, looking up at Unit-05 with a soft smile, he found it difficult not to love this one the most.
First contact, as always, was a delicate thing. In the primordial connection between them-- a woven tapestry between her flesh and his soul-- Kaworu's consciousness brushed against the vague shape of the Lilin named Eva in a mess of overstimulation and pain. Then, immediate and overpowering, his intention split into millions of needy tendrils, cutting through dimensions of noise until they were wrapped around every inch of something vaguely shaped like the Lilin.
On the outside, both his hands propped his chin up as he looked directly into Unit-05's eyes. In the consciousness they shared, he anchored Eva's soul, keeping it free from the corruption of Adam's body.
"Hello, Eva," said the soothing voice in her mind.
"Did you remember something new today?"
Eva felt her massive head jerk to the side at the sensation of Kaworu sinking in. To the outside world, the motion was nothing, merely a quickly - silenced alarm — but she knew he saw her move. It move, this thing that she was. In spite of this, Kaworu continued. He surrounded her, made her feel safe, drew out the almost - something that made her weep and weep and weep ...
and inside of herself, Eva's soul let out one last, long wail. Held safe by Kaworu, it then collapsed, head rolling forward. His presence soothed her, and Eva's sorrowful vocalizations lessened, turning into sniffles. Did she remember something new today ?
❝No.❞
Her metallic - sounding voice echoed in her own mind, through the vastness of her being. The tone she bore was quite human, though — soft and petulant. Eva hadn't recalled any new memories since his last visit. It was all the same : the cold, the fear, the burning hope she once held that no longer was there. A pressure built in her suddenly, and Eva's soul pushed against the tendrils of Kaworu's influence.
She wanted to be held, as much as he could hold her. Unit - 05's chest thrummed softly, moved rhythmically by the meat of her pulsing against it. Outside, her fingers twitched. Aching.
❝I don't remember ... more.❞ Eva's soul hummed. ❝Only what I knew before — and know now. I am lonely. Maybe I was in another time, but I couldn't understand it.❞
The breath she drew was rattling. Eva's voice lowered. ❝I am alone, aren't I ?❞
@signofourtimes asked:
His eyes felt like they were full of sand. Alfie groaned softly as they opened. Everything was hot, and heavy, and sore. Fuck, what kind of flu was this ? that this state was "getting better" ? He opened his lips to complain — but was stopped by the sight of Mark sitting next to their bed in a kitchen chair. The other man was folded forward with his head buried in his arms. Alfie reached out. His trembling fingers carded through Mark's hair. ❝Hey, you ... don't be an egg. You've got a baby in there, remember ? Get away from the sick guy.❞ It hurt to talk, but he was sure the sound of his voice would mean something to his lover. Mark had always been sentimental like that ( and his pregnancy had made him even more so ). Alfie managed a smile. He turned onto his side, propped himself up with a grimace, and scratched the back of Mark's neck. ❝Hey, hey ... c'mon.❞
It's not often he slept, not with Alfie so sick, and when he did, it was light. And yet, it was deep enough that he almost missed the gentle touches and words the sick man offered him.
Almost.
With his own groggy eyelids parting, Mark offered a warm smile as he looked at the sick man in their bed. There's an obvious frailness in his lover's movements, but they're adored no less. If anything, Mark finds it a relief that he's able to do such a thing. He toyed with the idea of shifting onto the side of the bed to be closer, but opted not to, more out of concern for any pain it might cause Alfie to move even remotely.
"The baby will be fine, Alf," Mark offers warmly, reaching a hand up to cusp the back of his partner's hand. "You've just got a bad flu. Nothing they can't endure. After all, the kid's got the genes of someone who managed to survive Mars."
With a pause, he adds with a shit-eating grin, "And, you know, whatever you've got to offer."
In a show of sincere love, however, Mark gets up to press a kiss to the other's forehead. Raising a hand, he cups the side of Alfie's face, stroking his cheek adoringly with the pad of his thumb.
"How are you feeling?"
Alfie let out a soft ❝heh❞ at the mention of Mars. He swiped his tongue over his dried lips. They curved up at the kiss — he couldn't help it, not when it was this sappy bastard. His sappy bastard. Mark's gentle touch made him want to close his eyes and sink into their bed again.
❝You may have survived Mars,❞ he said hoarsely, ❝but I have survived every pub in the whole a' damn Europe.❞ Alfie laughed then. ❝Suppose our baby's indestructible with such super - parents, huh ?❞
His hand reached up. Alfie pressed his palm to Mark's belly, against the firm curve of it, and felt his smile deepen. After a moment, his touch shifted to Mark's hip. He applied as much pressure as he was able, clearly wanting to coax Mark down onto the bed. Let him sit, if he thought being a space pirate was enough to shield their baby from Alfie's hellish flu.
Alfie's fingers wormed under Mark's shirt, rubbing leisurely circles over the other man's bump.
❝I'm hungry, babe. I could eat a horse. C'mon, get my mobile ... let's order take - away, yeah ? have 'em drop it ? mm, whatever you two want.❞
Eva would think later that she should have known better. The flowering plant that she has been nursing in the bathroom sink was a ticking time bomb with a certain little girl protesting her bath time. Delilah's squeals of protest brought the plant spilling over the side of the basin, grasping at her mother.
The three - year - old used the distraction to escape. Pudgy fingers wrapped around her blanket on the way past. Giggling with glee, she ran into the rest of their home, trailing bubbles, flower petals, and green leaves. Her lack of clothes and dampness didn't seem to concern her ; the Summers' daughter was too pleased with her jailbreak.
Eva yelped at the feeling of the plant yanking on her hair. She didn't know if she should be impressed, amused, or irritated. That didn't change that the greenery growing out of the sink was only just coming around to listen to Eva instead of the girl, the tub was still on, Delilah was loose, and the baby sitting heavily in her belly meant that she wasn't going to give swift chase soon.
So it rang out, loud and a tinge desperate : ❝SCOTT !!❞ In the living room, Delilah yelled happily.
@signofourtimes, unprompted. Fuck You x2
It was hearing muffled giggling and padding of little footsteps that had him looking up from where he was putting together a casserole of chicken, cheese, and broccoli. The scream of his name came as no surprise, then; he tried not to smile, especially knowing that Eva could only ever sound that exasperated for something relatively serious.
Seeing Delilah in the living room only confirmed that suspicion. Scott's mouth was schooled into a frown, and he set his hands on his hips to signal this wasn't the time for any funny business. Delilah's giggling, and the way her rosy cheeks rounded with her cheerful little smile, would not work on him.
(Allegedly.)
"Honey," he started, crouching once he'd gotten close enough to where Delilah plunked herself down, "Mama sounds angry.
"Why's Mama angry, huh?"
Eva managed to get her sweet - smelling, flowering ( once again ) friend back to its rightful place in the sink. She quickly turned off the faucet, just before it reached the point of being too high, and puffed out a much - needed breath. After a moment, she drug herself up and sat on the lid of the closed toilet. Hair snarled, pretty green sweater damp, and expression still torn between annoyed and amused. One hand rubbed her bump while the other squeezed a little rubber dinosaur that had tumbled out of the bath during Delilah's daring escape.
The delicate golden cross around her neck sparkled in the mirror, catching her eye. Eva Summers gave it a small, albeit tired, smile.
❝Have you found our escapee yet ?❞ she called, unable to help the wear in her voice. She could see the edge of Scott, crouched down.
Perhaps hearing her mother, perhaps sensing her father's no - nonsense airs, Delilah wrinkled up the bridge of her nose. She looked at her papa, with eyes inherited from Eva, and then shook her head. Obviously, she didn't know why mama was angry.
Delilah's false innocence was quickly squashed by her next maneuver : she threw her blanket up, clearing intending to cover Scott's head, and tried to scurry away on her hands and knees hastily, giggling. Wet tendrils of hair bounced against her face.
❝Hide n' seek ! Hide n' seek !❞ the girl sang. ❝De - de hide — and Daddy nooo seek.❞
In the bathroom, Eva sighed.
He had lost his focus for just a second, young face turned toward the sound of his mother calling for one of his sisters — but that was enough. His father's strike was firm enough to leave a bruise ( though the lesson that accompanied it was gentler than a real world adversary's teachings ). Noah heard his jaw click, felt his feet slip, and tasted the blood from his teeth digging into his lower lip on the way down.
The teenager's first reaction was to throw his hands up to his face and check his glasses. Panicked, thinking the worst, until his fingers locked them back around his ears firmly. Noah puffed out a breath and stood. Long locks of reddish - brown hair hung in front of his boyish looks.
❝I'm fine, Dad,❞ he said. Red trailed down from his mouth. Noah's hands folded into fists again as he dug his heels in. ❝Everything's fine. Again, yeah?❞
@signofourtimes, unprompted. Fuck You
"No," Scott said firmly. "We'll go again after you've iced that, son."
There was a difference, after all, between training soldiers for war and training his kids to defend themselves. He had plenty of reasons to be an X-Man, but one of the biggest ones was to make sure his children could simply be children. Noah, headstrong as he was, had no obligation to get back to fighting when he was clearly in pain. Not here, where training was supposed to be safe.
"Go sit," he said, already walking towards the cooler in the yard. Scott pulled the folded hand towel from the outdoor table on his way, then wrapped it around some ice straight from the cooler before sitting at his son's side.
"Let me take a look at you, huh?"
He'd held back, he was sure, but he could already see the beginnings of a bruise blooming on Noah's face. My baby, he thought, pressing the ice there. If Noah opted to hold it himself, though, Scott wouldn't fight him.
Noah knew better than to argue with his father — though he wanted to. What he had done was stupid. The self - inflicted shame he felt stung almost as badly as his cheek. So, his feet dragged on their way to where he plopped in the grass. He pushed his hair back out of his face, which gave Scott a clear view of his pout. A bit childish, yes ... but he was still young ( even if he insisted otherwise ).
The hand that came up to rest against Scott's on the makeshift ice pack was of course not holding his father's, offering some small comfort. Noah's free fingers scratched along the edge of his glasses, at the tender skin rubbed hour after hour.
❝I said I was fine,❞ he repeated. Fine should have meant something to Scott Summers. ❝C'mon, Dad, I'm not gonna learn if you do this. I'm not a baby — I can take a hit, seriously.❞
His voice wavered for just a moment, small in the way he used to sound when he skinned his knees on the pavement as a child. ❝Really, it's not that bad ... right ?❞
Noah's nail dug into the soft indent near his ear. God, these things were driving him crazy today.

Prompt: You've found a man who can be your weird secret third thing and your last chance.
I am sad because I love you, because I love you so much, and because I am not a bee to buzz with you lightly. I am not a flower, not a tree, not a rain-hewn stone. I am not a storm or a cresting wave, not a thorn or a vine. I am not the sun stinging the water, not the moon on the snow. I am not a star in the dark. I am not the dew-wet wind, not the cloud-stained dawn. I am only a girl, a small, plain girl, a girl who must smear her lips in honey to be found sweet.
