new ocs who's surprised!!(i'm not)

introducing atlas and elliot!! i make new ocs whenever the weather changes so i knew this was coming but i'm excited to write with them:)) this post is mainly going to be used as a reference for fic but i'd love it if you wanted to read through and send in questions for them!! i'm going to be filling a lot of the remaining sicktember prompts with them but if you have a burning desire to see them in a specific situation please let me know because i'd be more than happy to fill it:)

they’re both juniors at Boston University, and fics can be anywhere from just meeting(which will usually take place mid-sophomore year) and while they’re in an established relationship(mid-junior year)

atlas: charismatic, popular d 1 ice hockey player with secret fears of disappointing a low-income family, losing his scholarship, etc. he pretends to have everything put together, but can sometimes crack under the pressure of living up to people’s expectations. he works two jobs to afford college, and is also co-captain of the hockey team, so he’s constantly busy and trying to prove himself. wears a lot of khakis and tee shirts, cool sneakers, nail polish, rings. he’s in a single dorm so elliot spends a lot of time in there, and when either one of them gets sick, they usually just hang out in atlas’s dorm so that they don’t spread it to anyone else.

elliot: well liked enough so that he doesn’t have trouble, but he’s definitely more withdrawn and tends to throw himself whole heartedly into his studies. he’s a microbiology major with a math minor and he wants to be a doctor when he’s older but he’s struggling with all the stress of his major. His health isn’t fantastic(doesn’t eat well, doesn’t sleep enough, too much coffee, etc) so he’s sick a lot. he’s pretty wealthy and struggles with familial expectations. constantly has the secret desire to drop out and live on a farm but he’s terrified to disappoint his family. interns at the Boston medical center and picks stuff up there a lot. academia style if he’s on top of his game but during finals he’ll come into class in sweats without his hair done. His roommate’s name is Aidan and they get along decently well, but they can both definitely get annoyed at each other, especially if there’s a risk of one of them getting the other sick(which might come up later…”

might play around with how their relationship started and the timeline of their relationship in my fics because i'm excited to experiment, but i'll let everyone know at the beginning of a fic where they are in their relationship. send in questions/requests with them if you're curious!! i'll be reblogging some questions hopefully if you guys wanna send in questions or anything like that

Something really cute I don’t see talked about much is the weirdass sleeping positions people wind up in while sick with a cold.

Maybe because they’re horribly congested and keep moving around their pillows because elevating their head just the right way is the only thing that can relieve their sinuses. Anytime they sneeze, their sinus pressure shifts and they have to reposition.

Maybe because their nose is incessantly running and tilting their head back at a specific angle is the only way to lie down without a wet spot forming on their pillow.

Maybe because they’re freezing cold or burning up (or both, intermittently) and they keep layering on or kicking off blankets (or clothes…) until they finally pass out.

Maybe because they’re horribly achey and can’t get comfortable because of it, but keep making futile attempts to shift their body around in hopes of finding temporary relief just long enough to fall asleep.

Imagine character A walking in on character B, who has been coming down with something, passed out in bed or on the couch, their head positioned awkwardly on an arrangement of pillows, their arm bent in an uncomfortable-looking angle, another arm or leg dangling off and touching the floor. Tissues are scattered among crumpled layers of blankets, sheets, and discarded of half-worn articles of clothing. In an instant A realizes, oh, they’re like sick sick.

Now the question is whether to wake them when they’ve clearly struggled to fall asleep in the first place, or leave them to rest and risk neck or shoulder pain being added to their list of symptoms.

The LOOK of someone feverish and only half awake, the flushed face and swollen bloodshot barely open eyes, looking blearily up at their caretaker without seeing them, huddled in their blankets and sweating, the only sounds coming from them weak incoherent mumbles

Thinking about a man who isn't used to being taken care of coming down with an awful cold. He can't stop sneezing and coughing, he's got a fever, he's absolutely miserable, but he's still got work that needs to be done and others needs to put before his own. Eventually, someone (maybe a work crush/lover 👀) gently cups his cheeks and coos sympathetically, telling him that he should be in bed. He insists that he's alright, but can't help but lean into their touch. Crush/lover decides to just let him keep working, not wanting to push him too far out of his comfort zone, but offers cups of tea, tissues, medicine, and a bit of physical affection throughout the day. They convince him to let them take him home, and give him the most gentle care he's ever had; a warm bath, a soothing massage, some soup and tea, and of course, plentiful cuddles. He falls asleep to the sound of their steady heartbeat and their fingers in his hair, relieved to finally have someone who will help him even when he's sure he doesn't truly need it

A already knows they have a cold but they crave attention, especially when they're sick. so, they waddle down the hall, wrapped in a blanket, a box of tissues under their arm and stand in the doorway of B's office. they sniffle loudly to get B's attention, who slowly turns around in their computer chair. "can you feel by forehead? i'b not feelig good" A whines, pulling the comforter tighter around themselves, their fever giving them the chills. B, who can tell exactly what's going on, pats their knee, initiating for A to come sit on their lap, whom of course takes no time at all doing. once A is all snuggled up in B's lap, with their head resting on their shoulder and tissue box now sitting in their lap, they close their eyes. B gently places a hand to A's forehead, which indeed does feel a bit warm and takes a mental note of the number of times A has sniffled since entering their office and the wetness dribbling down from one of their red chapped nostrils. B, who still hasn't said a word, plucks a tissue from the box in A's lap and wipes it under their nose, cleaning up the mess pooling above their upper lip. "you've got a bit of a cold, haven't you baby?" B says softly, their voice smooth like silk. A just sniffles in response. they become very small and needy when they aren't feeling well. "sniffles, red runny nose, fever, and probably a bit sneezy too i presume?" B checks A's symptoms off the list in their head, knowing how much A enjoys being taken care of. A nods, followed by a few dry coughs into the crook of their elbow. "and a cough? well, that's just no good now is it? i say we get you back to bed so we can start taking care of this cold of yours." B says, kissing A's cheek.

When someone who's had a nasty cold is adamant about being on the mend already and then has an argument with the caretaker, nothing serious, something practical probably, but it's enough to get them a bit worked up, which makes their symptoms kick back, and they're suddenly sneezing and coughing again and sounding so stuffy and perhaps their cheeks are glowing a little bit.

(might be that the caretaker at this point loses interest in the argument, because just look at the poor thing.)

No ok but a caretaker gently shushing a feverish and delirious whumpee will NEVER fail to Fuck Me Up. Maybe it's paired with the dabbing of a damp cloth against their overheated forehead, or a soft "oh honey no, that's not what I meant," when scared and confused tears form in the whumpee''s eyes, or maybe just a quiet and tired "hush now, go to sleep," after hearing the whumpee ramble half-coherently for an hour.... it eats me alive

inspired by a post from @feverflushed !!

It starts with one loud, wet hack, which is quickly followed up by a few weaker coughs, the whole thing topped off with a gasping, rattling breath. Then, it repeats. Some fits are worse than others, some muffled into a sleeve or fist. But they've been a constant echo in the apartment for the last three days.

Theo has very very bad bronchitis. Bad enough he's lost his voice. Completely and totally. It started off as a cold, but being so accustomed to working through any illness he has, he inadvertently worsened it into a sinus infection. Then a chest cold. Then, of course, bronchitis.

At first, Seamus was annoyed he wouldn't just stay in bed. Even though he can't leave the house, he spends all day playing piano in the living room or typing away on his laptop. Seamus can't imagine he's getting much accomplished, but he figured out sometime yesterday that lying in bed only 1, worsens his cough, and 2, is useless, because he's coughing way too much to get any sleep.

As a result, he walks around the house like a ghost - pale and trembling, eyes rimmed in purple.

Seamus has been working from home ever since Theo spiked a fever that wouldn't drop, and in the scheme of things, he hasn't really needed him that much. But Seamus has come home to him on the bathroom floor curled in the fetal position one too many times.

He's taking a zoom meeting on the third floor at the desk that runs their home studio, and even though Theo is two floors below him in the kitchen, he can still hear the echo of his coughing. He's pretty sure the only way he's getting absolute quiet is if he's actually in the recording booth, but he can't be bothered.

One of the women on the call asks if he has a dog.

When the meeting is over he walks downstairs to see Theo struggling to make tea. He's in his same sweats and t shirt from yesterday, both Seamus's. He's the same height as Seamus, but much thinner, so the clothes hang off of him. His hair has already halfway fallen out of the bun Seamus tied up for him, stringy with feverish sweat. He found out this morning that Theo can't lift his arms above his shoulders. His ribs are too sore from coughing. That broke Seamus's heart a little bit.

Seeing his hands shake trying to open a new box of tea breaks it a little more. He keeps having to stop and hack into his elbow.

Seamus walks up behind him and rests his hand on his shoulder, some of his tenseness easing immediately. Theo sighs, breath still rattling, and hands Seamus the box. He opens his mouth to say something, but only manages to get out a few weak coughs.

"For someone who can't even speak, you're pretty noisy, T," he says gently, with a kiss to his temple. Theo gives him a halfhearted middle finger and just a hint of a smile.

The wet cough kick continues.

The violent coughing fits that ensue when congestion gets trapped in someone's chest, irritating their chest as it works its way through their lungs into their throat.

The fit starts with a few dry, irritated-sounding coughs that begin to crackle and dampen, the congestion settled unreachably deep in their chest and inching its way out.

They pause briefly to take a long, shuddering inhale before the fit continues, the coughs getting wetter and wetter, their cheeks flushing dark with breathlessness as the congestion loosens further but hasn't quite dislodged, still irritating their chest and triggering their cough reflex.

Another pause, this time a desperate gasp as they anxiously grip a sturdy surface nearby, eyes crossing and filling with tears as they thump their chest fruitlessly with a splayed hand to try and help loosen the congestion so they can breathe.

The fit continues, the coughs growing louder, and deeper, and wetter, the vocalizations being drowned out by the violent crackling of mucus as the congestion gets so close to their throat, they're almost home free, they can almost breathe- just in time, spots are beginning to appear in their vision and their oxygen starved face is slick with sweat.

One final- now panicked- gasp, accompanied by the rattling crackle of congestion, before the last leg of the fit interrupts it, coughs coming in short rapid bursts due to the lack of available oxygen. They sway, becoming weak in the knees as the spots cover more of their field of vision, their throat raw and their chest still ticklish and irritated.

One last cough, more violent and aggressive than the last thirty or so- they lost count after the first twenty, to be frank- brought up something.

Spitting into a tissue and gasping for air, relief floods their body as they practically collapse, leaning against their sturdy surface of choice for support as air floods their slightly-less-congested lungs and the oxygen-starved redness drains out of their face.

They blink, finally able to see without the threat of losing consciousness lingering in the corners of their eyes, and see their partner staring at them, shock and horror painted onto their face, and a shattered mug surrounded by spilled tea at their feet.

"What? It's just a bad cough, I'll be fine"

"I just watched you almost cough yourself unconscious, put on your coat and boots, we're going to the doctor now."

Casual admission of illness with just the slightest hint of neediness will never not slay me.

Someone's huddled up on their sofa in their pajamas, wrapped in a blanket and quietly nursing a cup of tea while someone else stands behind the back of the sofa, silently inquiring "What the hell happened to you?".

"I don't feel well..."

"My throat hurts..."

"I feel hot/cold/dizzy..."

even just the simplest "I'm sick..."

Very matter-of-fact, straight to the point, but said in a way that yanks violently on the heartstrings.

Needy without being whiny, the slight inflection that spills all of the pathetic-sounding details they left out:

"I don't feel well...and I'm all alone, and cold, and lonely. I can barely stand... I could really use a glass of water and another blanket...maybe someone to rub my back until I fall asleep."

they are sleeping next to you, and they are so sick. their nose is ridiculously congested, causing them to snore, loudly, as a result of them having to breathe through their mouth. their nose makes a gurgling, crackling sound when they occasionally try to get any air through their nostrils in their sleep, which causes them to cough, waking up slightly when doing so. you know it's only a matter of time before you wake up one morning with this same bug.
