This is even funnier/more sad when you realize this is actually from a storyline where a right wing thinktank convinces Etrigan to run for President, and he does so he can use America's armies to invade and conquer Hell for him (or barring that Nuke Hell back to the Stone age)

people will genuinely make me seem like I'm overexaggerating when I say that sanist writing is deeply embedded in Batman stories, but it's unfortunately true: the text goes above and beyond to demonize Bruce for things that, when you break them down, are symptoms of his ptsd (or, undiagnosed but heavily implied conditions like OCD, Autism) reacting to traumatic events. He is given absolutely no space to grieve or cope with these reactions nor is he given agency over his own trauma and is constantly forced to repress his emotions for the benefit of others. Bruce Wayne: Murderer? / Fugitive focuses on making you feel bad for his extended family, especially Dick, who goes about confronting a man experiencing psychosis the completely wrong way By Attacking Him and Forcing Him To Become Violent, when Bruce is the one suffering from psychosis after his girlfriend is killed in his own house and he's framed for her murder. If you know Anything about Bruce Wayne and his paranoia, this is like one of the worst things you could ever conjure up for him to deal with. And he's barely given support during it. The fallout of Alfred's death is even nastier because the entirety of Alfred Pennyworth R.I.P focuses on how upset everyone else is and how Bruce needs to 'man up' and 'be the batman' the family needs him to be, he essentially gets blamed for Alfred's death and no one even allows for him to grieve.
Even before this, the narrative continues to paint him as 'doomed from the start,' and this line of thinking is unironically something Leslie and Alfred use to escape responsibility for his upbringing. For a character whose entire DNA revolves around trauma, Batman stories do a generally terrible job of dealing with the subject properly, and the way the fandom interprets those stories only makes my eyes roll. And don't make me even begin to talk about Zur and the 'evil alter' trope. Bruce, to this day, is blamed for things that were completely out of his control after being driven to such a low point that the only way he was able to cope was by allowing an entirely different persona to take over and the entire thing is genuinely so misshandled, I Cannot Keep Having These Conversations.

Here's an idea about why kids are so anxious and depressed all the time...the environments kids are in most of the time are very stressful and don't fulfill their needs for play, rest, proper variety of foods, positive social opportunities, and freedom from fear pain punishment etc
Like everyone with any basic understanding of animal welfare knows that if you put an animal in an enclosure that is too crowded, without hiding spots, with no freedom to move around, no ability to avoid harsh and stressful stimuli, and scare it by shouting at it and punishing it, the animal will become stressed and start chewing its own fur off or hurting itself or become sick or unable to eat...
But we expect human children to grow up in these conditions and literally blame them when they develop the exact type of problems that any creature under those conditions would

I do gotta say, it does get pretty frustrating when most media deals with how a person's physical or mental pain affects everybody else and prioritizes their perspectives and feelings over the person actually suffering it firsthand.

Got bored this morning and spent maybe nine hours researching, writing, editing, and submitting an article about the politics and finances behind the US government's 250th anniversary celebrations— a topic which will likely be considered moot by this time next week. This sounds like a complaint but honestly I enjoyed it more than everything else I did today

A culmination of all my thoughts from the past few days... you can write whatever you want, and I know I just talked about self-indulgence being a good thing, but I do think there's some nuance there.
A lot of books and media treat mentally ill people like the shit on their boot, especially if they're self-medicating through methods like drugs, SH, etc. Because therapy is not an option for everyone and doesn't always work, and anti-symptom medications have numerous, debilitating side effects that those who aren't taking it don't often consider, plus don't always work.
But the 'unlikable protagonist' always has severe depression, is a druggie, or both. The plot-twist villain always has DID or schizophrenia that just makes them preternaturally evil. It's repeated on this website every other day: 'X mental illness is never an excuse. X problem is never an excuse. If your brain is suffering, you should think about all the normal people you're hurting, and you should pull up your bootstraps and dish out money you don't have for therapy and government-approved medication.'
The reason why this book in particular was getting shitty reviews was because it was very frank portrayal of mental illness that didn't end with the protagonist getting 'help.' It didn't end with them taking medication, and the author gave a reason: they did try the above options, and none of it worked. All of the top reviews were talking about how medication and therapy does work and the author is just projecting themselves and their shitty behavior (the protagonist didn't do anything bad, by the way, they just had Thoughts about therapists people didn't like and engaged in recreational drugs and SH) onto the protagonist because they don't want to put in the work.
Nobody cared to read about the rest of the raw reality that many people deal with every day, they just want to live in a fantasy where 'bad' people go to Good People school and get punished. Because that was another complaint; the protagonist never got punished for... being ill? Again; the protagonist just thought stuff. They didn't even lash out at anyone.
And... that just really drives it home. People don't care about mentally ill people. They don't care about addicts. All they care about is that they feel comfortable at all times and don't have to deal with people being weird or rude sometimes.
I'm starting to understand that the majority of people do not Get severe, especially treatment-resistant, depression, but because they believe they have depression based off the fact that they get sad sometimes, they assume it's a matter of pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and don't sympathize with people who can't just Do That.

and like, salad isn’t even hard to make. grab some plants, dump em in a bowl. it doesn’t have to be fancy salad, they’ll fall all over themselves for the most mediocre salad in the world. we can make so much salad that we’re practically drowning in it, even if we eat some of the salad ourselves. and in exchange we’re protected from danger, we have great living conditions, it’s basically paradise compared to life on earth
