Naming in Spirited away and Judaism
In spirited away names gain a lot deeper of a meaning. They are no longer what your called, but are also directly tied to who you are and your memories. Yubaba takes away names and grants new ones to show and changing of self, that your not who you once were, but are now someone under her control.
In Jewish culture, it’s believed that names mean everything, and sometimes when something really awful happens someone will change there name to show that there leaving behind there past trauma and can move on with a blank slate.
When Yubaba takes away there names, she not only takes away there names, but also there memories, leaving an involuntary blank slate. In both Judism and Spirited away names have the same meaning in different formats, that names aren’t only something your called, but also a reflection of you past experiences with that name and changing a name leaves you with a fresh start, wanted or not.
