My old pinned favorite games list seemed a little outdated, so I tried to remake it, this time with a rough order from favorite favorite to least favorite favorite (lol). If you like these games or have similar favorites to me, maybe you should follow me or something idk

regarding the ocarina of time remake because i’m 100% sure everybody has many thoughts about it that im sure stayed totally civil (idk i haven’t been paying attention)… i honestly couldn’t care less if it’s “better” than the original game. i care that it does something interesting with the original game.
anybody can play ocarina of time whenever the hell they want. it’s on nso, and barring that, the n64 can be emulated on a potato. it’s a great game, and a classic. besides, it already got a remaster on the 3ds that did the whole upres and qol thing. truly, the only reason why ocarina of time should be getting a big budget switch 2 remake is that they’re gonna really do something with it.
i don’t know what that could be. i really hope it isn’t something stupid like breath of the wild-ifying ocarina, but i could imagine like… redesigned dungeons, or world design, or maybe new content, or, the best case would be a final fantasy 7 remake sort of thing where it’s more of a reimagining (at least that’s my impression of ff7r lol i haven’t played it and know very little abt it).
if it’s literally just the original game but with nice modern graphics and quality of life, like… whatever, but also i think that would be a huge mistake. i actually think it would do a disservice to the original game to do that, because it would turn the more dated elements of ocarina of time from features into flaws.

it’s actually very impressive the amount of goodwill and assurance of quality toby fox has built up over the years. his silly little game consistently becomes the most exciting part of any show it’s in because he made one of the best games of all time a decade ago. and this silly little game is on a fast track to also be one of the best games of all time.

another thing i keep seeing is people wondering why there isn’t a map in mina and like… well first of all there is a map. it’s not detailed but it does exist. but second of all does this game really need a room by room world map in the vein of the later 2d zelda games? it’s got a non linear structure but each given area is fairly straightforward. i’ve never gotten lost and i’ve explored most of the map. literally if you pick a direction you’ll end up on a linear path to the next generator. this game doesn’t have a map because it doesn’t need one, even if convention says it should have one. and honestly, it’s for the best. i’m the sort of person who’s always got his nose in a map if there’s one in a game, and not having one is really forcing me to engage with the world and pay attention to where i’m going. it’s nice.
It genuinely surprises me how many people I've heard get lost like... it's generally a straight shot to each area? Just look at the sign and it will tell you which way to go. If you want to know which area you should tackle next in the difficulty order check the newspapers.
I could see a map being a lot more helpful when it comes to secret hunting but in terms of just making it through the game, I got by just fine. Then again I'm pretty good at making mental maps of landmarks so *shrug*.
regarding secret hunting actually… i think this game does it perfectly. i genuinely think that with the skull you can buy that shows A) when you’re on a screen where there’s an item and, more importantly, B) when you’re a screen away from a screen with an item on it is genuinely all that you’ll need for the vast majority of secret hunting. i actually was stunned by how much i was able to find in this game on my own, with literally only one item feeling too opaque for me to figure out on my own.
to me, it comes back to the game simply not needing a detailed map, so why have one? not having a map forces players to make a mental map, and even though that’s obviously more mental work, it makes navigation all the more rewarding.
i hope mina the hollower leads people to go back and play the zelda oracle games because they’re truly hidden gems among the zelda catalogue and also the games that most resemble mina in look and feel (especially seasons). they’re some of the most gameplay-first zelda games in the whole series with great aesthetics and music, and are also some of the more challenging among zelda. i would bet the mina devs looked specifically at those games when designing a lot of mina and i bet more people would be into them if they gave them a shot!
i beat mina the hollower in just under 18 hours and my final death count was 22 which i feel is pretty good. the difficulty definitely ramped up in the final dungeon but it still wasn’t anything too crazy. i overall found the game very comfortable and Not the next silksong in terms of difficulty lmao
amazing game though. extremely meaty especially if you’re going for 100% (i didn’t quite get there cuz i wanted to see the ending but that’s my next goal). i can’t wait for the initial hype to wear off and the discourse shifts away from difficulty and more towards how high quality of a game this is.
also i have never played a souls game in my life but they are so ubiquitous in gaming culture that i have been calling the plasma vials in mina estus flasks for my whole playthrough and honestly i didn’t even know what their name was until seeing other people talk about the healing online. this is the chokehold the souls games have on gaming and it’s sorta crazy
regarding mina the hollower and difficulty because i feel like im going crazy…
this game gives you so many tools to make the game easier and i’m not talking about the modifiers. there are tons of extremely powerful trinkets that make the game significantly easier. the game points you in a direction of the next appropriate location difficulty wise with the newspapers. there are a bunch of different weapons you can try that might suit your playstyle better. you don’t immediately lose all your bones on death, and if you’re afraid of losing them by dying again, you can go spend them on something that will make your life easier. bones are everywhere and the game expects you to use them!!!
i know that i’m in the extreme minority in terms of experience with this sort of game. i’ve played the zelda oracle games many times. i’m a big zelda fan in general and grew up playing them. i’m a fan of difficult games (see: all of my silksong posts) and have learned a lot of the methods for making them easier. but genuinely i think that if you are paying attention to what the game is asking of you and not beating your head against a wall, it’s extremely manageable. this game has not been even close to as tough as something like silksong which i keep seeing it compared to, and i’m tired of seeing claims that it’s unfair or badly designed when the only way i could imagine that being the case for someone is if they’re not engaging with it in the way it’s asking you to.

i’ve stuck with the daggers for my whole playthrough of mina and they’ve been basically perfect for me but the fact that there’s several different weapons to use is so exciting to me. i just know i’m gonna do the same thing i did with silksong with this game where i do a whole playthrough of the game with each weapon to get an idea of how good they all are and i know im going to have an awesome time doing it cuz this game is fucking goated.
gonna take mina releasing as another chance to dunk on echoes of wisdom because what the fuck nintendo
this white bread bland ass game that’s literally just the link to the past/link between worlds overworld again but this time with purple goop land and annoying summoning mechanics instead of actual combat and puzzles. and apparently it’s supposed to represent “wisdom” because you can allegedly be “creative” with how you traverse the world. suck my dick nintendo. you could’ve done anything with the first zelda game actually starring zelda and you did this bullshit. this creatively bankrupt half measure to appease both old fans and the ones that came in from the wild games that appeased literally no one because everything about it was half baked. it’s not even that the game was bad, it was just so unremarkable that you could delete it from existence and i doubt most people would have feelings about it.
thank GOD we’re getting games like mina the hollower that actually get what was so enjoyable about those old games because if all we’re going to get out of official 2d zelda games from here on is slop like echoes of wisdom i literally don’t want them.
between mina the hollower and pippistrello and the cursed yoyo from last year, it’s been really awesome to see that the indie zelda clones are alive and kicking. the last time nintendo made a 2d zelda game that was even close to as good as either of these games was fucking minish cap, a game that released when i was a toddler. it’s so nice to see that indie devs actually fucking get this style of game when nintendo has no interest in keeping it alive.
people were making it sound like mina the hollower was gonna be this brutal dark souls insane thing and it turns out it’s basically if oracle of seasons was turned up a notch in terms of difficulty. it’s challenging but definitely not brutal. honestly it’s basically exactly what i was hoping for.
maybe ive just played so much 2d zelda that the difficulty of this game isn’t hitting me the way it is for others. i dunno. great game either way; the hours slipped away as i played lmao
