UGGH and the lunch with david and yuna. shane resenting the weight of everything that's been put on him and kind of throwing it in their faces like no, I super can't have a glass of wine. everything I am and everything we've created relies on me not having a glass of wine during the season. like he wants them to realize everything he's giving up to be Shane Hollander. and then yuna saying well I don't want you to lie honey that's not who you are. everything that I am and everything we've created relies on me being a liar and not having a glass of wine. and he's openly resenting that for the first time and doesn't know where to put it except his parents and that feels like shit because he loves his parents. ohhhhh my baby
benedict “please do not go” bridgerton vs sophie “move out of your house, you’re fucking up my work environment” baek
Also miscommunication 😍
the betsy bonus chapter really makes me ache every time i reread because it really shows how andrew was genuinely just a kid. getting to see andrew from the perspective of bee, a fully grown adult woman who sees his vulnerabilities and whose job it is to help him, rather than from neil's pov, who sees andrew as this fearless, strong person and the only one who can hold him up, makes you notice how childishly he behaves sometimes and how much he really is hurting, especially in that particular scene. and it rips me to shreds ☹️
all I'm saying is it's a missed opportunity if "i wanna be your girlfriend" doesn't make season 2.
random little things about the cottage episode that i love:
ilya slapping shane's ass as they walk into his bedroom
the way shane enunciates the s's in the word "guests"
shane plucking a hair or fluff off of ilya's lips when he wakes him up in the middle of the night to tell him his plan
shane being so incredibly and endearingly terrible at chirping ("i'm gonna fucking kill you" / "well, you're not anything")
ilya wearing shane's plaid shirt
shane wearing the same shirt to pick up ilya as he does to see his parents
ilya's fake yawn/groan when shane picks up hayden's call
the way that shane says "it's a normal car" in the exact same inflection/tone as he says "i fucking didn't" in episode 2 (in the stairwell scene)
the way shane kisses ilya's forehead when ilya kisses his chest (after the "not anymore" line), like it's a reflex
ilya's face when shane suggests he should maybe wait in the car
ilya's little dancey dance when he eats the pasta
david passing the parm to ilya and ilya loading that shit up like he's never seen parm before
The difference is that jealous Ilya looks homicidal while jealous Shane looks suicidal
@raccoonboywrites coming correct as always
the left scene is scott looking at how happy they are, the queer people that are OUT in a gay bar. that's how kips story is going, continuing, he'll get over it, he'll live a happy good life, with his family.
hey, i don't have to come out, i can live like this, as long as they're happy.
then after that he sees his own family, shane being hit in the head. barely conscious for the moment, and his boyfriend ilya just horrified , staring at him, backing away. the ref is pushing ilya away, ilya is yelling, i believe they're shushing ilya too. and shane is gone.
that is scott's family, that is it for them.
that's at the START of the game, that's the START of their story. they'll never go to the bar/cottage or drink happily with their friends and family, they'll just suffer and their story will never start.
if scott doesn't do something fast, his kiddos are doomed.
Allegorically and literally Scott wasn't there for shane and ilya. He watched their devastating queer experience through a comfortable glass view of the TV broadcast . he'll retire in a couple years, he's good.
but if he retires quietly ilya and shane, the kids of hockey won't be okay.
but he changes his mind, and what do we get in the end? shane and ilya drinking with their family too
the scenography:
the metal is a cage and it reminds me of the hockey mask cage they wear for protection on the ice.its dim and its so red, filled with heart and dim lights
boom after scott comes out, it brightens up, no more cage, orange and yellows. look at the two large windows lighting the family up.
the cage of hockey is off your face
scott and kip are those windows of light, the doors, shining on ilya and shane's family.
attention to detail

"Never in life have I blushed. Russians do not do this."
shane: probably about to throw up
ilya: nom nom
Absolutely incredible the way Ilya has an entire two weeks with Shane all to himself, no distractions, it's been promised, and the first time Shane's attention isn't 100% on him (Hayden phone call) he can't tolerate it (because its Hayden the excuse Shane gives when he has to leave the person who gets to be in Shane's life every day the person Shane loves the way Ilya loves Svetlana who he could see himself marrying) and makes a HUGE and immediate bid for Shane's attention (phone call BJ) that is also lowkey (not really its highkey) a competition for Shane to pick him (continuing the game) over Hayden (actually telling Ilya to stop) and for other people (Hayden) to know it (fingers in Shane's mouth while he's talking). Like WOW the jealousy. And then once he's been affirmed and feels secure in being chosen (setting Hayden aside to come, hanging up on Hayden) he can joke about Shane loving Hayden (to get a denial) and not have to fear and envy it. What a guy.
losing my MIND over the fact that Ilya probably thinks he's actually helping when they go to Shane's parents' house.
They get there and Shane is like "Ilya and I are, uh..." and Ilya is like "hmm we haven't talked about this but I know Shane is really uncomfortable right now, so I will shout out the one (1) english word I know that describes this situation. LOVERS."
Then they're talking about how long they've been together and Shane is like "since our rookie season" and Ilya is like "well, hold on now, you said you don't like lying to your parents, so let's be very clear about when this started. We have to be so clear about the fact that it started the summer before our rookie season. Wait, would it make you feel better if I give your parents the exact date and time of our first hookup?"
And then Yuna is like "you've been in love that long?" and Ilya is like "I need you to understand I've been drilling your son into mattresses from here to Florida for the last decade, but I can't say that because I want you to be my mother in law, so are you picking up what I'm putting down?" and Shane is like ILYA and Ilya is like "I am ANSWERING MY MOTHER IN LAW'S QUESTIONS"
And then he drinks his vodka and eats his pasta in his Boston shirt, very proud of himself for being sooooo supportive, meanwhile Shane is actively praying for a black hole to swallow him up
ilya showing how much he loves shane in front of his parents will always make me cry. he does it without hesitation. comforting him, speaking so easily and openly about their relationship, "you would leave boston for shane" "yes". he is the loverboy of all time. he's meant to be on the verge of tears with love, eating pasta at his in-laws. this is what he was meant for. the uninhibited displays of emotion and vulnerability and how none of it seems to phase him, none of it is forced. he has wanted a chance to love shane so openly and he's been given it and he is taking it all.
I think something that makes Heated Rivalry so different from a lot of “feel good” (in quotes because I have cried so much watching it and know I will again esp content in The Long Game) queer shows is how seriously it’s taken by everyone involved. Not in the “they turned this into a gritty dark version” like with Riverdale serious, but in the way that everyone involved in the project had no shame in making it.
I feel like in a lot of queer feel-good content, there’s a layer of shame or feeling it will be “cringy” that makes production and detail a little sloppy. But with Heated Rivalry you get the opposite. You get actors who really are engaging deeply and empathetically with their characters. Then you have a director and production team who are putting so much thought into the lighting, song choice, framing shots, all of it. The fact that there can be so much analysis on these things and then production goes “oh good you got what we wanted! It was intentional!” makes me so happy.
And on top all of this, they are not ashamed of their fans and the og book fans, they recognize that they can’t and won’t betray the material but instead can dive deeper into it and expand it is the pièce de résistance.
this morning i am thinking about how ilya was always the one we saw feeding the people in his life - his family in russia, shane with the tuna melt and ginger ales. at the cottage, we see the reverse. shane cooks and feeds ilya, asks him what he wants to eat, stocks his fridge with cokes. shane's parents feed him pasta and promise to bring food the following day in a way that his family never did. that's a baby who's gonna be loved the way that he has always loved others 😭
