thinking about ‘mistress’ and how for benedict it seems like freedom. a way to find your own happiness outside of the constraints of society. how he looks at hiscox and virginia and he feels hopeful, because this is sth he and sophie could do. this is a way out of an impossible situation. only he doesn’t get that for sophie this is not freedom but danger. how being in a relationship outside of society means not having the protections society grants you. it means she can be abandoned again, left out in the streets again
