The Duffer Brothers being fucking weird! A comprehensive report!

all of the weird things the duffers have done over the years, since its now coming to light and im seeing nobody’s made a post about it detailing all of it, so i volunteer myself, if i miss anything feel free to tell me, ill do my best to garner information on such topic and add it to this post!

Exhibit A: the generalized weird treatment of Noah Schnapp

before i start this, i do not claim myself as a noah schnapp fan/stan, or supporter due to his views/actions relating to pro-isreali controversy, i am just here relaying evidence/proofs of duffers being questionable.

- Matt Duffer’s “big smile” at the exorcism scene in s2 (12y/o noah s being tied up on all 4 bed-posts)

- Matt Duffer punching Will’s dummy (a fake dead body made of 11y/o noah schnapp, with a questionable serving-no-purpose-in-the-show mouth hole)

others noted this aswell, but it seems like the duffers had it out for noah, as they didn’t have ANYBODY else doing these things. tying him up to a bed having him scream out in pain, having him display the aftermath of getting sexually assaulted, making him scream for hours, relive trauma as the center of attention in a room in-front of people who’ve known him since he was 11, in an embarrassing and degrading way. having him display a little gay boy being punished for being gay, pain, for both the actor and character, physical, and emotional. as-well as setting him up for the worst review-bombing in the series. also, this is usually mentioned in a joking manner but, the bowlcut. to me this seems like an addition to all of it, just another ‘hey laugh at me laugh at me’

to me this looks like an abuse of power, and in a way, (non-sexual?) grooming. two older parental figures milking this guy for all his worth for years? setting up a relationship of trust with him at a very young age, and slowly as time goes on getting more comfortable publicly humiliating him?

what now is just a typical love triangle with pretty girl either ending up with the nerd/jock, was ORIGINALLY PLANNED, to be something much much worse.

Exhibit C: the weird reoccurring incest shit

- i thought i was the only one to notice this but im slowly seeng people catch on, in thirst traps for finn/mike, the clip of him saying “you’re the genius investigative reporter after all” is becoming a more commonly used opener. all i could think seeing it was ‘yeah yeah cute but isn’t he talking to nancy here?’

having mike&jane kiss at 12, makeout at 14, (not just the characters but think about the actors too) and having hopper enforce the ‘3 inches rule’ implying he had ideas of ‘doing more’ ??? children acting this out as-well?

treating mileven like the most mature relationship, far more complex and ready than all others, yk, literal children. compared to relationships with adults.

yet dumbing down the developmentally disabled girl to *baby noises* “mikey!”, having them kiss before she even knows her name, before she knows basic shit about anything, before she knows free will? using this disabled girl to support mike as a romantic interest before she even got to support herself as a character

Will and El’s character stories would’ve made dramatically more sense if they were swapped. Walk with me.

Let’s start with El. And to start with why hers was bad, let’s compare it to someone with a story JUST like hers, that was good. Max!

Theres a HUGE difference in why lumax did good & mileven did bad despite meeting on the first episode of the season and kissing by the last episode.

Max was a person before she was a girlfriend. Before she was in a romantic relationship she had platonic relationships. She had family. She knew how to be a friend before she could go and learn to be a girlfriend. Because before she was lucas’s love-interest: she was max. And her character arc doesn’t revolve around lucas. It revolved around herself and her inner struggles and learning to grow into yourself despite these struggles. It’s not about being a daughter. It’s not about being a girlfriend. It’s about her. El was mikes love interest before she knew her name. Before she met her mother. That romantic plot was established before hopper was even IMPLIED to be her new father figure.

Els story should’ve focused on learning to be herself and love herself, find support in her family and friends, and eventually grow to be herself. Learn to have friends, and with that, learn to have lovers— thats Will’s story.

Wills story should’ve been a slow build up to romance that ends in established, even after death, love. A love that you don’t even have to be present for— thats El’s story.

They had the perfect setup to do this as-well. El, who already had a messed up view of family in the beginning? Will, who already knew his name, who already has an interesting plot revolving love? (Queer love) whose established to already have friends? Know what a friend is? And already have a crush on someone?

Stranger Things reused the same trope of having their gay characters whole story just be family. Let gay people love too!! The whole point of gay/queer is literally love! Stop this erasure🫩

This is why i HATEE mileven so bad, the literal concept of it, and how it began just deteriorates El’s character— and LOVE byler, Will’s character needed a love interest to start+end with, and Mike was there the whole time for him. Narrativley, byler burger with a side of independent el fries wouldve been a much better meal deal 🥹🩷 (and jancy ketchup + jopper bbq sauce with lumax soda)

I will FOREVER be convinced most byler haters/mileven defenders either don’t care about el’s story, use her as a self insert, are misogynistic, are ga, or all 4 together. #1 El supporter i luv my girl!!!😞💜 #mike should’ve died in her place #I DON’T believe. #i would rather her be dead than alone in a mountain bc at least shes with her mother/sister

okay so idk if this is a good or likely thought and i legit got into terukane a few days ago so i might not have a super good grasp in their dynamic, but i started brainstorming and got this idea that some of the way teru treats akane (bothering akane by being all authoritative, controlling, manipulative, even w a playful demeanor, that kinda stuff) is bc that’s his best and safest attempt at trying to connect w him.

akane isn’t only wrapped up in the supernatural—which is meant to be teru’s sworn enemy—but he also sees past the careful demeanor teru has built around himself, treating him like a human being, and will even challenge him. and that’s both absolutely terrifying and relieving for someone like teru.

ngl, i might be overthinking it, but the way teru treats akane reminds me of the way some emotionally repressed ppl (esp kids/teenagers) treat their crush 💀

- as i stated before, using certain manipulative & controlling behaviors in order to connect, but also more specifically:

- purposefully getting a rise out of him just to see his reactions bc they’re endearing & bc he doesn’t rly know how else to get his attention w/o feeling too vulnerable or afraid

- enjoys akane’s presence without making himself vulnerable so he can disguise his own genuine affection and (possibly romantic) interest as just “messing w akane for fun” or smth. that way, he stays in control of himself, akane, the entire situation itself, his image, etc.

- seems almost straight-up fixated on akane but like i said, disguises it by pretending it’s less than that through little jabs and tests

- seems jealous of/bothered by akane’s crush on aoi in multiple scenes, but also doesn’t seem to have a crush on aoi, either… kinda suspicious 😭

- and imo one of the biggest things… when aoi gets trapped and seemingly guilty explains to akane that he was aware that would happen, he looks like he 1) tries to stop akane and/or help him up my grabbing his wrist, and when that doesn’t work, 2) shoves him into the ground or wtv to stop him for good. “for his own good”— that seems to be teru’s biggest motivator for the ppl he loves: manipulation or smth similar for the sake of their safety, no matter what. not to mention, teru just looks kinda sad, empty and guilty the whole time???

- and don’t even get me started on that vague comment abt liking “akane-san” w/o specifying, which makes it feel purposefully ambiguous

ofc none of this has to mean anything at all canonically but i’m super into complex and ambiguous characters who try to use control and manipulation as connection and affection + i swear you’ve dragged me into this ship and now i’m stuck thinking abt one-sided terukane lmao /pos

I do have to correct you on something tho: teru (in the original world) strictly refers to aoi (girl) by her surname, he does not call her akane-chan, he calls her ‘akane-san’, which is not purposefully ambiguous, but rather a respect thing. Off the bat he is established as a very respectful guy, so this makes sense for him to do.

You’ve also opened my eyes, when i first read this i had like an epiphany because i had never thought about it that way. All this thinking and it never once crossed my mind. If you look back on everything teru’s done with this context in your head, it seems to fit PERFECTLY. He DOES seem to be doing all of it, in a way, to connect. Either they’re in love, or AidaIro are terrible writers.

i think his weird thing with aoi, constantly teasing her n stuff, joking about ‘i’ll steal ur girl’ typeshit with akane is out of interest. Not interest in aoi, but interest in their relationship. To me, teru’s always been the observant type. That much was made obvious.

I think the reason he really tries to insert himself into their relationship and does all that ‘help me make this🥺🍬’ at the convenience store with aoi, is because he wants to have that for himself. I mean the loom in his eyes just screams yearning. Whether it’s the relationship aoi has with akane is what he wants, or to be in her place in that relationship, we don’t know, but what we DO know, is there’s still hope xx

A deep dive on the contrasting themes of tbhk (misogyny/breaking gender stereotypes) 🖊️

Tbhk or better know as Toilet-bound hanako kun is a manga both written and illustrated by two woman, that is semi-nonfiction-fiction. It uses themes and/or topics of the supernatural, yet taking place in an accurate highschool setting. The creators of Tbhk, AidaIro, are both presumably in their late 20s, as a past work of theirs, was made in 2011, when they were still students. if we estimate they were both 15 in 2011, they would be 28-29 years old respectively. Despite being on the younger side, and despite both being girls, AidaIro seems very traditional in the sense of norms and values. Yet, they seem open to breaking those same values.

for example, many gender norms are broken. Those being:

Akane/Aoi. This relationship trope has been set up to be the very one sided obsessed type. And it’s not very common to see the guy, be the hopelessly obsessed one. Akane, in a primarily female dominated field.

Kou. A key trait of his is that he’s always cooking or cleaning. He’s the housekeeper, he’s an incredible cook, and he takes care of his little sister. That being a primarily female dominated field.

the contrast to those being: sexism. Examples:

The woman in this manga, do practically nothing. Despite the main character being female, trust me when i say Nene did more heavy lifting in the PILOT CHAPTER.

we don’t see much individuality from any of the woman. Yes aoi’s getting some from akane but at the end of the day you can clearly see no doubt they’re still getting together. Despite all her character growth she’s still just a soon to be wife. And i hate that. I hate that so bad. She had a whole arc where she separated herself from Akane, only spoke to Nene, really stood her ground with boys, only for her to end up right back with him cut it OUTT.

And don’t even get me started on the infantilization of every single woman. I love akane but COME ON. I don’t remember exactly where it is but he’s said things like oh i’d never lay a FINGER on a girl implying he’d never hit a girl which like ok polite thank you but i feel like that shows that he don’t see woman/girls as other people, he views them as more fragile, and that its such a sin to throw a punch at a GIRL. But for guys? nahh nahh he’ll fuck up teru anyday.

every mother in the story ( - Aoi’s), her husband no willing single mothers, just depressed divorced ones. No #feminism#singlemom at all. Aoi’s moms whole character is being divorced, Mitsuba’s moms whole character is being a widow, yet Minamoto’s father (despite being entirely absent) is not known for also being widowed? His wife is dead and he’s not seen as a struggling parent. The single father gets sm grace but he’s clearly having a hard time parenting his own children. Kou doesn’t even set up a spot at their table for him. He’s literally just not there.

akane kind of stops the rest of them from going, realizing how he must feel, doesn’t stop with them, and keeps walking towards him

he then sees what’s happened, understanding that this is probably now too far, and decides to go back

i’m not sure if that implies he’s going to the original world or just turning this one back a bit, but he’s reached his breaking point.

I’ve just finished relaying what’s happened, but now i guess it’s all going to be just speculation. From the past and how he’s acted in situations similar to this one i do think he will start to take what he’s doing more seriously, he knows he can’t take this world back but the most he thinks he could do is bring his brother back, so next chapter is probably either going to feature someone else’s perspective, or them going back.

What i mean by ‘someone else’s perspective’ i mean there’s a lot of scenes that follow important events such as this one, that would usually be followed up by another sub plot, as usually 2 or 3 happen at once, but because of the second plot literally dying i don’t actually think this is very plausible. Either we view the story through the pov of the main cast or Sakura/Natsuhiko (overarching villans).

terukane’s also probably going to be more locked in, in the next chapters because of what’s happened, akane knows despite the fact that his chances of getting his brother back are pretty high, that still won’t undo the trauma of seeing him dead at the bottom of a well (an assumption), and will probably treat him gentler than before, knowing he has issues (as well as his brother jus dying).

akane always shows respect for teru, but is never actually very nice to him. But if you look for it, you’ll find he cares, he cares a lot.

1.) he’s popular

2.) he is kou’s older brother

3.) he is the student council president

And 4.) he is apart of the esteemed ‘minamoto’ clan

Other than that we know little to nothing about him, which is why there is SO much room for speculation, like jit could be anyone

REASON 3: i think ive already said this before but he does not like any girls or have any love interest at the moment which is odd, because literally everyone else does. Teru is constantly outed even by Aidairo themselves which i think is so funny.

i am no hater or at least i don’t like to be, but do you (aoikane/aoiaoi shippers) actually know peace? Do i just happen to stumble upon the mean ones everytime or are ygs genuinely just so hateful? Please i don’t mean to be mean but like do you genuinely exist? No joke every time i have interacted with an aoikane/aoiaoi shipper they have been so mean and aggressive towards terukane or any other alternative ship including either aoi or akane. Not even just interactions but viewing you like in action and YOU interacting with OTHER aoikane/aoiaoi shipping people has made me like lose hope in the world. The main reason i come to hate ships is not because of the characters (sometimes) but mostly because of the people who ship them themselves. I mean for example I would die to see Nene and Hanako get together hell yeah but that’s mostly because theres no homophobia lingering around them?? Not only is there no queer subjects or matters involving either characters but the main crowd of tbhk fans just enjoy it above all else don’t get mad at anyone for shipping any one of them with anyone else because they know damn well its so clearly established and loved by everyone they don’t need to worry about it ever becoming something it’s not.

i would be so down to say like ‘oh thats so cute akane loves aoi’ if you didn’t harbor so much unwarranted anger towards us?? What happened to being respectful?? (And it might just be the homophobic ones i’m not sure.)

Like touching back on what i said about Hananene was that for example there is no queer subjects/matter involving either of them, however there is with aoikane (debatably). For example (again damn) there is arguable evidence suggesting another male character has romantic interest in him. Which of course does not make him HIMSELF queer, but it does involve him in such an agenda (?).

there is a difference between a good way to handle this, and a bad way to. For example, you are a good/unproblematic Aoikane supporter if you:

Acknowledge that either one character is associated with homosexuality and that one character is the sole supporter of the idea, and realize that homosexuality can infact coexist with your favorite ship (one sided)

Acknowledge that aoiaoi has a few elements to it that make some uncomfortable, and allow others to respectfully disagree with you

You are a bad/problematic Aoikane supporter if you:

Deny the possible idea of either one character being associated with homosexuality and deny/act on aggression towards it

Deny aoiaoi’s initial or ‘current’(?) toxicity

And someone who will straight up deny that aoiaoi had something wrong with it in the first place is someone you do not wanna be. It is important to understand that aoiaoi is a semi problematic ship, and i’m not saying this ‘because I’m biased’ i’m saying this because (i think) it’s true. At the beginning and even some aspects of now, aoiaoi was a very unhealthy + toxic relationship/ship, hence why a lot of people hated it, and it’s okay to say things like ‘omg i love how aoiaoi’s coming back yess!!’ But to say things that make it sound like aoiaoi was perfect all along and people who disliked it were ignorant or ‘straightphobic’ is just stupid.

Please just be nice guys cmon😭 i have never in my life seen aoiaoi/aoikane shippers JUST TALK about said ship always finding way to bond ab their hatred for terukane (subconscious homophobia or purposeful, we’ll never know)
