it was weird to think back to when they were kids with some hero status to prove all following in the footsteps of people with mantles they’d eventually take . not to say it all went flawlessly there had been too many hiccups — few fallen teammates, far too much trauma to account for but they were still standing and that had to count for something . 

the woman takes another sip from her drink enjoying the rare downtime she can get out of costume with dick now that he hasn’t been living a few doors down from her for quite some time . “ you know … the place gets real quiet without you there . i have to come and visit you and barbara more often, “

admittedly  ,  dick  was  finding  it  easier  to  share  his  time  between  his  teammates  ,  babs  ,  and  his  family  now  that  they  were  in  such  close  proximity  .  the  circumstances  weren’t  exactly  favorable  ,  but  being  able  to  navigate  between  the  three  most  important  aspects  of  his  life  made  it  easier  for  him  to  relax  .  

“  that’s  surprising  ,  you’d  think  with  roy’s  uncanny  ability  to  never  shut  up  this  place  would  be  anything  but  quiet  ,  “  dick  chuckled  ,  setting  his  drink  down .  he  missed  this  more  than  anything  ;  being  able  to  sit  down  and  talk  to  donna  .   his  bond  with  her  was  liken  to  that  of  siblings  ,  and  though  they’d  had  their  ups  and  downs  over  the  years  he  could  always  count  on  donna  to  keep  him  steady  .  “  you’re  welcome  to  visit  us  as  much  as  you’d  like  donna  .  i  plan  on  sticking  around  more  often  now  that  i’ve  settled  in  ,  so  expect  to  see  more  of  me  around  here  .  “

lorna  won’t  pretend  that  things  between  herself  and  her  older  siblings  wasn’t  weird .  truth  was  that  it  hadn’t  even  settled  fully  for  her  ,  she  still  had  trouble  navigating  having  a  sibling  and  she  hoped  her  siblings  understood  that  her  stand-offish  attitude  was  not  personal  but  instead  the  result  of  her  uncertainty  .  still  ,  lorna  was  trying  her  best  to  be  receptive  ,  and  so  when  she’d  invited  wanda  to  meet  her  for  coffee ,  she  had  done  it  under  the  pretext  of  needing  her  help  with  hanging  up  some  flyers  afterwards  ,  but  she  partially  hoped  to  catch  up  with  her .  “  you’d  think  after  so  many  mutants  going  missing  there’d  be  some   article  or  report  about  it  in  the  news  ,  “  lorna  chimed  as  she  set  down  the  newspaper  she’d  been  leafing  through  .  “  there’s  not  even  a  trace  of  the  word  mutant  .  i  don’t  know  why  i  keep  expecting  for  them  to  say  anything  ,  they’re  not  even  being  subtle  about  it  at  this  point.   “    /      @midsommvrs​​

“hey, am i good to throw out this leftover chili? it looks like it’s gonna grow legs and crawl right out of this tupperware…” it’s called to the male from the kitchen, dinah attempting to keep herself busy so that she doesn’t drive herself insane looking for clues in the files bruce had sent them. she was happy to be on standby but the lack of information they had to work with was frustrating, and a bit worrying. when there’s no answer, she’s leaning her frame against the doorway to the living room. “hey, robin hood, i’m talking to you,” she teases before abandoning the kitchen to join him at the table. “there’s nothing there we haven’t seen before, babe. give yourself a break,” hands glide against broad shoulders, giving a squeeze to the tense muscles. “if you keep squinting like that you’re gonna get a forehead wrinkle. do you wanna end up like bruce? in your forties and aging worse than alfred?”

oliver  couldn’t  help  but  dwell  ;  being  so  out  of  his  element  and  gotham  of  all  places  has  made  him  a  lot  more  .  .  .  bruce-like  .  he’d  hoped  that  by  now  they’d  have  somewhere  to  start  ,  that  with  collaboration  they’d  have  uncovered  a  secret  or  two .  after  yet  another  pointless  justice  league  meeting  ,  oliver’s  mood  had  soured  ,  his  thoughts  swept  away  by  his  frustration  .  eyes  tracked  over  the  same  names  and  places,  all  information  he’s  mesmerized  —  it  does  nothing  to  ease  his  frustration  .  only  when  dinah  speaks  to  him  does  he  raise  his  gaze  ,  the  budding  frustration  dissolving  as  she  approached  .  “  can’t  help  it  sweetheart  ,  this  city  has  that  effect  on  me .  if  you  catch  me  hangin’  around  in  a  dark  cave  with  bat  ears  promise  me  you’ll  put  me  out  of  my  misery  ,  “  he  grinned  ,  hands  settling  on  top  of  hers  .  features  softened  as  he  placed  a  kiss  against  the  center  of  her  palm  .  “  sorry  pretty  bird  ,  just  getting  sick  of  finding  nothing  .  “

nose glued to her laptop screen, barbara had completely lost track of time, jotting down countless amounts of information that could help with their search. the sun began to set outside her window and she reached for the switch of her light, turning to haley with an exaggerated pout, offering her a bone shaped treat. “don’t worry, he’ll be home soon.” she reassured her with an affectionate tap on the dog’s nose. haley wagged her tail in delight and babs watched as the small pup scurried out of the room with biscuit still between teeth. she turned back to her screen, only to be pleasantly alerted by the familiar sound of the front door opening and the excitable barks that followed. the commotion brought a smile to her lips and barbara made her way towards the pair.

she watched for a moment as dick embraced the dog, her head resting against the doorway as a chuckle escaped. “i think someone missed her daddy.” barbara teased, acknowledging the items on the counter with a glance and she pushed away from the wall to scratch the pup behind the ear. “i hope you brought enough to share this time, or is that the leftovers from your new HQ?”

“  did  you  girl  ?  or  is  babs  just  being  nice  to  spare  my  feelings,  “  dick  grinned  ,  face  scrunched   as  haley  licked  his  cheek .  bending  down  ,  he  let  haley  bound  away  back  to  her  forgotten  biscuit  ,   before  he  turned  back  towards  babs ,  his  hand  settling  snugly  along  the  curve  of  her  waist  .  “  lucky  you  ,  i  managed  to  snatch  an  entire  box  just  before  the  other’s  could  notice ,  “  he  said  ,  thumb  tracking  along  her  jaw  .  “  really  putting  my  life  on  the  line  for  you  babe  ,  the  titans  won’t  be  happy  once  they  realize  they’ve  been  conned  .  “  

hand  tightened  along  her  waist  ,  proximity  between  them  diminishing  as  his  face  hovered  just  a  breaths  away  from  hers  ;  its  here  ,  suspended  so  close  from  her  face  ,  that  he  studied  the  way  her  features  arranged  and  re-arranged  ,  seemingly  unable  to  stop  the  way  his  heart  pitched  forward  in  a  way  her  could  only  liken  to  a  free  fall .   it  gradually  worsened  the  moment  his  lips  found  hers  ,  but  what  might  have  scared  him  once  now  enthralled  him  in  a  way  he’d  never  grow  tired  of  .  hand  now  caressing  her  face  ,  dick  grounded  himself  enough  to  pull  away  ,  lips  curving  instinctively  .  “  you  know  ,  instead  of  visiting  bruce  tomorrow  at  the  manor  ,  we  could  stay  in  and  get  some  rest,  “  he  grinned  ,  implication  anything  but  subtle  .  “  i  could  text  him  right  now  and  say  we’re  going  to  be  busy  ,  just  say  the  words  .  “

“  don’t.   i  won’t  even  consider  it  ,  “  it  spilled  out   of   him  frantically  ,  the  very  notion  of   losing  barbara  raising  a  panic  in  him  he’s  unsure  of  how  to  control  .   his  outright  denial  is  selfish  on  his  part  ,   he  knew  that  barbara  meant  it  with  the  best  intentions  ,  but  he  couldn’t  begin  to  fathom  what  a  life  without  her  would  look  like  .  not  bruce  ,  not  his  siblings  ,  not  even  his  titans  could  mend  away  that  kind  of  pain  —  losing  barbara  would  inevitably  mean  losing  himself .  afraid  of  the  implications  it  would  mean  for  him  ,  dick  instead  found  it  easier  to  bury  his  face  in  the  ridge  of  her  shoulder  ,  arms  wound  around  her  waist tightly  ;  slowly  ,  with  the  rising  and  falling  of  her  breath ,  he’s  able  to  find  composure .  “  i  will  never  let  anything  happen  to  you  babs  ,  “  dick  whispered ,  lips  still  pressed  against  her  skin .  they  both  knew  the  dangers  of  this  kind  of  life  ,  had  been  dealt  blow  after  blow  with  the  death  of  a  teammate  ,  a  loved  one  ,  a  sibling  .  security  was  a  luxury  they  did  not  have  ,  and  yet  ,  dick  had  all  but  promised  it  .  whether  she  believed  it  or  not  ,  he  wasn’t  sure  ,  but  he  intended  to  see  it  through  ,  cost  him  what  it  may  .  “  don’t  ask  me  to  be  okay  with  losing  you  barbara  because  i  never  will  be  .  i  refuse  to  accept   a  reality  in  which  you  aren’t  by  my  side  .  “   /     @midsommvrs​

lorna  was  ,  in  every  way  ,  was   her   father’s   daughter .  perhaps  it  was  a  curse  that  she’d  inherited  his  powers  ,  that  she’d  become  the  mistress  of  magnetism .  the  legacy  of  their  father  was  a  shadow  she  would  never  escape  ,  meanwhile  wanda  and  pietro  were  seperate  of  it  ,  inheritors  of  a  world  that  feared  them  instead  of  spited  them .  wanda  who  had  the  ability  to  change  the  course  of  their  reality  and  pietro  who  could  outrun  it  ;  lorna  in  a  way  envied  them  ,  not  in  a  spiteful  way  ,  just  in  the  way  a  sibling  envied  another .  “  i  don’t  know  what  you’re  talking  about  wanda  ,  “  lorna  muttered  ,  and  yet  she  knew  exactly  what  it  was  wanda  was  talking  about  .  the  anger  ,  that  brewing  destruction ,  was  so  close  to  unraveling  the  more  she  watched  mutantkind  bend  under  the  weight  of  anti  mutant  paranoia .  too  many  mutants  had  gone  missing  ,  and  all  of  it  was  swept  away  and  ignored  .  for  once  in  her  life  ,  she  considered  to  take  the  route  that  their  father  had  ,  to  assert  their  presence  in  the  way  of  force  ,  but  she  was  still  an  x-man  above  all .  “  even  if  i  did ,  i  would  never  let  you  get  tangled  in  whatever  mess  i  create  .  “  a  pause  as  she  pushed  a  lock  of  green  behind  her  ear  ,  shoulders  shoving  into  a  shrug  .  “  but  thank  you .... i  appreciate  you  sticking  around  ,  i  know  this  is  still  a  lot .   “    /     @midsommvrs​​

“ if i wanted a fashion advice i would have visited the boutique down the street, not some sup par jewelry store,”  lorna answered with a slow roll of her eyes. maybe insulting the other wasn’t the best idea, but she couldn’t help the gradual rise of her temperament as she focused on evening her stack of flyer out on the display. “you sound so elated,” lorna said, eyes narrowed and her head cocked as she took in the other’s slight reluctance. the question about whether she was a mutant didn’t startle her as much as it should, these days she made little to no effort to pretend she wasn't. “ i’m sure you would like to help us mutants, but honestly, nobody knows what the hell is happening. for now, this is all we can do,” she sighed, head nodding to the stack of flyers.
