we don't talk enough about how overjoyed merlin was to see his two best friends be in love. like, yeah, we can insert however much merthur angst into arthur and gwen's relationship as we want but the fact is that merlin loved these two people immensely and i think if he'd decided he couldn't have either of them (bc he couldn't be fully honest with them and it just wasn't fair, not to any of them, for a relationship to be pursued) then he wanted them to be truly loved and what's better than his best friends being in love!! with each other!! the two people he loves most in the world in love together!

I mean, I ship Merthur like burning but I could never get behind the Merthur angst over Arthur and Gwen’s relationship. It seems so OOC. Merlin adored them both and they both adored Merlin. These two ships were never in conflict for me, however you choose to look at their dynamics, whereas every other princess of the week angling for Arthur’s hand in marriage made me grow horns and breathe fire on both Gwen’s and Merlin’s behalf.

Also, Arthur needed to get married for the sake of Camelot. ps the Eira plot annoyed me too. As if Gwaine would be that stupid. Pfffft.

Hi, anon! I really have to stand by my opinion here.

When it comes to Arthur and Gwen, the whole shade!Lancelot mess isn’t even my biggest issue because, yes, as you said, she did cheat on him right before their wedding, and yes, she did so much damage to him as a king, and he never knew about the magic involved. However, even before that, he kept breaking up with her every two episodes because, first, oh, there is a princess-of-the-week that I must marry and oh, what will daddy think, and then, oh what will uncle Aggy think! Like... the early stuff is understandable, and Uther I get, he would have killed her if he knew, but season 4 Arthur was on so much bullshit long before shade!Lancelot.

The power imbalance between them was staggering. There she was, waiting for him with everything on the line (including her very life) while he wavered back and forth, and she would just quietly accept whenever he rejected her, and then just as quietly take him back when he apologized, usually after Merlin got on his ass about it. There are maybe two scenes where she loses her temper and ~speaks her mind~ in front of him (and both times it was about him saying please and thank you when somebody brings him lunch). It’s frustrating because these scenes are such red herrings that people use as evidence for how he ~respected~ her opinion and how she could speak freely around him, when, in truth, she was always so careful about what she said and how she said it, always so respectful and deferential of him, always waiting patiently for him to come around (which usually happened after Merlin slapped him upside the head). The difference in status between them never went away, even after they were married, whereas she was always herself with Merlin, and Merlin was the one who was constant and consistent throughout their entire relationship. There was never a moment when he wasn’t in her corner, including when she tried to kill both him and Arthur (and nearly succeeded) during her evil spree. In fact, during that time when Merlin was the one possessed, she caught on immediately because it was so out of character for him to be nasty and territorial towards her. They were never in competition with each other, the two of them were a team long before she and Arthur became one.

Then we get to season 5 and she is finally Queen, but Arthur is so distant! It is Merlin who remembers their anniversaries and the little gifts and signs of affection, not Arthur! Never Arthur! What Arthur does is put on a performance of being married when he has to, hides things from her and lies to her, while Merlin fills in the blanks. And then when Uther comes back as a ghost and tries to kill her, Arthur whines, “But how could he do that to me, when he knows how much I love her?” conveniently forgetting that this is the man who murdered her father and tried to have her burned at the stake TWICE for petty reasons. Also, let's not forget that after all the trauma Uther put her through, Arthur still had her nursing his evil senile arse (of all the servants in Camelot!!) because he never once thought to tell her that no, you don’t need to do that, you don’t have to constantly keep proving your loyalty and devotion over and over again at the expense of your own mental well-being!

Anyway, my point is, even without Lancelot in the mix, Arwen is such a bland and, dare I say it, messy pairing on its own. It works because ultimately, both Gwen and Arthur are super cute individually, therefore when things are good, they are also cute together. But without Merlin and all the effort he put into their relationship, I just don’t see their love lasting longer than a week. Merlin is the one who did all the emotional labour in that marriage, Gwen and Arthur just had candle-lit dinners and picnics together. Merlin was always in her corner, always checking in on her and if she’s OK (including through all the messes with Uther, while Arthur simply felt entitled to her just getting over it). Merlin was the one who always made sure that she knew that she is loved. Without Merwen, Arwen just does not work for me at all.

(Before somebody comes after me about this, yes, I think that Merthur was unbalanced, messy and unhealthy too, but that is a whole different rant for another time. The difference for me is that even though both Merwen and Arwen are lovely in their own right, neither can actually stand on its own. Merwen without Arthur makes no sense within the narrative when we consider how integral Arthur was to both their lives, and Arwen would have died an ugly death without Merlin involved at all stages of their relationship. Merthur has no such problems, Gwen or no Gwen, healthy or unhealthy, dark or loving, they are bound and fated and exist on a level above all else in that show.)

Also, ugh! This is where I agree! All the hate for that Gwaine plot and her-who-shall-not-be-named! No love! And I was doing such a great job of forgetting that ever happened too! 🤮

“Tell me, Merlin, do you know how to walk on your knees?”

Honestly, aside from how gay this line was, I love the added layers behind it. Essentially, Arthur is asking Merlin if he knows how to be subservient, to obey orders. And Merlin doesn’t – not really. Despite growing up in a tighter knit community, Merlin never really learned how to pretend to be less than he is. Even after arriving in Camelot and watching a public execution, Merlin continued to use his magic quite a bit.

This line sums up everything about their relationship through the series, to be honest. Merlin doesn’t know how to be lesser than and Arthur doesn’t know how to change him. He wasn’t expecting to ever meet someone like Merlin and you can see his quiet amusement during their second fight when Merlin asks him “How long have you been training to be a prat?” Arthur smiles as he says, ”You can’t address me like that.”

By the end of the series, Arthur tells him “I don’t want you to change. I want you to always be you.” Merlin is unlike anyone he’s ever met and Arthur likes that.

It goes even further than that and as time goes on, it becomes pretty clear that Arthur is not the one in charge in that relationship and, frankly, I think Arthur likes it that way because everyone always expects him to lead, be in charge and on top of things. He’s always so stressed, insecure and unsure that Merlin must come as such a relief.

Is A Muslim Magical Girl Offensive?

Question!! mod kaye, i know you touched a little bit on the topic of magic being taboo for muslim characters… i wanted to write a magical girl story in homage to a genre i love, with a diverse cast of young women, including a hijabi muslim character. now i’m wondering whether this is sketchy. the magical girls’ powers, in-universe, don’t derive from “magic” but from alien technology/quantum physics/something like that, and to separate her further from anything fantastically “magical”, the muslim character’s powers incorporate electricity and computer technology (as one of her mundane hobbies is programming, this is amplified as a source of her power). is it still inappropriate to create such a character or expect her to be received warmly by muslim audiences? should i consider rewriting the character as a non-magical ally or just scrapping her? i don’t want to lose her, since i like the character and i think the magical girl genre should celebrate all kinds of girls and girlhood. but i want to check myself and be cautious. (i’ve seen artists on tumblr draw hijabi magical girl fanart and stuff too, but i know it’s different when it comes from an outsider/oppressor.)

Hello there!

First of all, may I just say how lovely it is to have a question written to me and so sweetly? Thank you just for that and for your concern about writing a Muslim character correctly!

Like every mod has noted before, no people are a monolith, and as I’ve noted before, Islam is understood and prescribed and practiced in different ways by different people. I’ve said before that even more liberal Muslims I know don’t like the idea of magic as it is used by a Muslim character.

Even with the Beauxbatons headcanon, sorting into Hogwarts houses and – as you pointed out – the new obsession with drawing hijaabis as magical girls and even magical creatures (that, I must note, is not always done respectfully or with the idea of proper representation beyond that hijaabi being used as an “exotic” change) – I still often see a consensus of leaving magic alone when it comes to Islam or else treading carefully, and I think we should respect that.

Of course, in the same vein, there are Muslims who don’t have a problem with it. We’re not a monolith and I’m just noting that so that I’m not erasing them.

(In Islam as I’ve been taught it, magic is viewed as having repercussions of evil and only used for ill purposes. There are several stories where someone was taught magic as a trial of faith, and when they proceeded to abuse it, as expected, they lost their faith and were led astray.)

But, to be entirely honest, I also have a magical girl story, and – in the name of representing the girl in me who loves her magical girl animes – there is a Muslim girl who is a hijaabi. I’ve written down this idea as being possibly magical realism, which would then make the entire world have a dream-like state that, I would hope, would cancel out the whole onus of magic being focused on that one Muslim girl character. It’s definitely still a work in progress, and even as a Muslim girl, I want to do the best by my faith and by my own heart.

That might be one possibility to circumvent any problematic aspect, and I think you’ve already done that: playing around with the atmosphere of the world at large. Reading through your idea, I don’t see anything innately problematic about the idea of this Muslim magical girl and her particular talent. If anything, it reads like a superhero origin, and we all know Muslim superheroes that are accepted and do quite well with Muslim readers.

Personally, I often see magical girls as a brand of superheroes. If we can have Kamala Khan – who, as a side note, is wondrous – wearing her suit and transforming and being awesome as a Muslim heroine, I’m pretty sure there’s a way that we can have our magical girls, too.

I agree with you that the magical girl genre celebrates girlhood and I appreciate your concern with representing different girls, so I hope that in some way, this answer helps you. If anything, my primary suggestion would be to continue to write with an eye for making that Muslim character as full-fleshed and real as you can and keep asking respectful questions from people of the Islamic faith when you need to. Generally, I would stay away from Muslim characters doing magic unless it’s established that magic is a norm in the universe you’re writing? Like in Harry Potter, it’s just something that exists and I personally (just me here, not trying to speak over anyone) think there’s nothing wrong with, for example, having Muslims at Beauxbatons. I mean, I actually did like that headcanon, and I was thinking about how it would mesh with them being Muslims. I thought maybe they just wouldn’t do divination because knowing the future seems like it would be something that’s haram no matter what? I don’t know - I mean, I’m a revert and even though I’ve studied Islam a lot, there’s still a lot I don’t know.
