I have a handful of “magic” phrases that have made my professional career easier. Things like “you are not your code” and my preferred way to say no: “that doesn’t work for me.” These are tools in my interpersonal skills toolbox. I find myself uttering phrases like, “right or effective, choose one” at least once a week. This week I realized I had another magic phrase, “we don’t do that here.” The college I attended was small and very LGBT friendly. One day someone came to visit and used the word “gay” as a pejorative, as was common in the early 2000s. A current student looked at the visitor and flatly said, “we don’t do that here.” The guest started getting defensive and explaining that they weren’t homophobic and didn’t mean anything by it. The student replied, “I’m sure that’s true, but all you need to know is we don’t do that here.” The interaction ended at that point, and everyone moved on to different topics. “We don’t do that here” was a polite but firm way to educate the newcomer about our culture.

A useful script to deploy when faced with bigotry or similar disruptions to a group or workplace culture without going into ‘right vs. wrong’ talk that someone awful could attempt to argue with.

This is Taliesin Myrddin.  He was 23 years old.  He passed away last night in Portland Oregon along with another hero while defending two muslim girls from hateful abuse from a white supremecist on the MAX train.  The media has a lot of information to give you about the asshole that took their lives, but I want to share Taliesin and eventually the other hero too.  They are the ones who deserve to be known, they are the ones who literally died to do what was right. They are the true spirit of Portland Oregon, not the evil man who did this to them.

This is Rick Best.  He was 53 and a veteran of the army.  He had three teenage sons and a 12 year old daughter.  He also gave his life to defending two muslim girls on the MAX train last night.  He also deserves to be known.  Thank you Talisein and Rick.  You are symbols of the good in this world and true heroes to your city.  I am so sorry for what happened to you and send all my love to your grieving families and loved ones
