Kind of crazy Metroid datamining find: There are over 30 minutes of unused NPC banter in MP4! All of this would seemingly have played at Base Camp. Unused dialogue starts at 7:38, everything before that is accessible in-game.
Notable highlights:
Armstrong has a dog
Duke's wife and daughter have names
MacKenzie secretly set up booby traps around the base
Thinking about if Prime 5 brings back the troopers and lets them survive. If Prime 4 is about grief and moving forward despite loss then Prime 5 could have the catharsis of letting the squad live despite everything, in the face of Sylux losing everything. And that could be a fun motivator for him to go absolutely berserk.
also letting samus have a group of friends who are alive. not to quote doctor who on main but "just this once, everyone lives" is my desire for Prime 5
Part of the problem with Sylux’s motives for me boils down to two things:
Firstly, we already have had so many straightforwardly-evil villains in this series. And coming off of Prime, we also had Dark Samus, who plays exactly into that. There reaches a point where people wanted Sylux to be different from DS, so giving him more a more nuanced motive and dynamic with Samus could’ve worked into that.
The second issue is what Sylux represents in the sense of what he opposes. Fusion came out and established the idea of the Federation, our status quo institution, being corrupt and playing with dangerous forces it doesn’t understand for more power. Even if the original intent was for this to be rogue elements within the faction, it still counts either way.
Zero Mission’s manga further establishes that there’s prejudice within the Federation; Not to the extent of the Space Pirates, but Samus’ Federation comrades hail from species mistreated by the Federation. Vogl is a militant nationalist, a red flag who inspires the bully Damara deals with, and Keaton being chairman instead of him is seen as a W.
Then we get Hunters, in which Sylux is introduced as someone who hates the Federation yet isn’t aligned with the Space Pirates. He’s only ever seen attacking soldiers while the pirates are infamous for attacking civilians. He wields the Shock Coil, which is described as being a weapon the Feds were designing used banned technology; Meaning they were creating a war crime weapon when Sylux repurposed it against them.
Now it’s possible the Shock Coil was in the middle of development when high-density neutrinos in warfare were banned and it was locked away in storage for that reason. But again, we already have the simpler setup that Sylux is turning the Federation’s own sin against them.
Corruption mentions a Horus Rebellion that was “nasty business.” It’s ambiguous enough so we don’t know what the motives behind it were. But a scan removed from the game notes that Aurora Unit 313 participated in the conflict and raised red flags among the federation for being unusually aggressive, even if this did lead to the ship being protected. What goes around comes around, perhaps, in that Dark Samus reprogrammed it to control Phaaze.
When we get the infamous Other M which nevertheless reiterates the issues of the Federation. Adam Malkovich is at least revealed to not be in on the thing, but even he has to atone for his sacrifice of his brother Ian, no matter how well-intentioned, by doing the same to himself.
Dread comes out and while the issue with the Federation has seemingly been resolved, Exelion Star Corporation’s EMMIs are still speculated as being developed specifically to hunt down Samus’ Metroid DNA. And they might still be! There might still be setup for Exelion as an antagonist, and for it to be connected to the Federation!
So when you have Sylux just be another straightforwardly-evil villain who was always power-hungry and the military institution did nothing wrong to this lone underdog guerilla fighter, it adds nothing new to the story. We already know there are bad actors in this universe. It doesn’t expand on the worldbuilding or politics by exposing another perspective that challenges the Federation without necessarily being evil for it, it doesn’t highlight what exactly the Federation stands for by contrasting what it doesn’t stand for, etc.
And in this political era, it seems almost questionable. It makes me think of how Ganondorf’s character in the Legend of Zelda series has gained more discussion with how he was blatantly an orientalist, antisemitic caricature threatening the good European-coded Hyrule, but at least Ocarina of Time was willing to acknowledge Hyrule as having flaws, and Wind Waker gave nuance and sympathy to Ganon.
But with the recent direction of the series making Hyrule into a divinely-ordained kingdom and Tears of the Kingdom being an unironic colonial narrative in how Rauru totally just wanted to spread peace to other kingdoms and Ganondorf was an evil bad actor for not wanting to bow to this outside force coming into his lands, it’s all. Worthy of scrutiny.
And when Japan has a bad history of imperialism and nationalism that it refuses to take any accountability for, and Nintendo falling into the pitfalls of “family friendly” companies being conservative as hell, I think the optics of Sylux are worth discussing after Richard Vorodi insinuated he had a “great backstory” involving “threaded storytelling.”
It’s not even that I can’t appreciate characters who are just petty haters who refuse to take responsibility for their actions, but we don’t really have any meaningful time to explore or enjoy Sylux as a villain. He’s barely there and disconnected from the actual story. And the narrative of Beyond ends up feeling like military propaganda. Tokabi is a reassurance for every soldier who joins the military for a living; He’s allowed to have his moral crisis over it, but it’s resolved by him simply being a good guy who sacrifices himself for the good fight anyway.
Any of the questionable things he does are only briefly alluded to and never really explored so its only purpose is to be handwaved, and as a whole Tokabi is designed to tell you that you did nothing wrong and your reasons are valid and even if you did do something wrong it doesn’t really matter anyway. Likewise, I love Nora Armstrong but uh. Un/intentionally she feels like a pink washing/homonationalism trope. Diversity win the federation soldier is gay!!!
Like mayyyybe Sylux can still be used to criticize the Federation as an institution in the sense that he was the type of corrupt element that made it flawed and broken to begin with. But when he’s already introduced as someone separate from the Federation and working for the pirates, it falls a little flat. And when you have Tokabi and other characters, it comes across in the same way that right-wingers can recognize certain things as obviously Bad. But they don’t want to engage with their systems being the cause of those things, and try to isolate the issue as some isolated incident/individual and not reflective of the system itself.
The cherry on top is that the Federation military is exclusively human in its depictions when the Zero Mission manga diversified the species, both in terms of the “Good” and “Bad” feds. When the goddamn Space Pirates are more diverse and Beyond even acknowledges this in a scan, it becomes a lot harder to ignore or find nuance in this sorta portrayal after a certain point.
Loovveee your writing. 😍 Would you be able to write where reader and Tyler are married and he’s out running errands when he gets notified from her Apple Watch that she’s taken a hard fall because she was thrown from a horse and 911 was called so he drives as quick as he can home to her driving through their gate trying to get to her faster and she’s unconscious and bleeding from a cut on her head and just worried husband vibes until she wakes up and is fine 💙
Oooo I love this. I gotchu boo 🤠 and thank youuuu I’m so sorry this is late 💗
“Don’t worry”
Tyler Owens x Reader
“Let me check the list because if I miss something, my wife is gonna have a fit.” Tyler laughs, pulling the grocery list out of his pocket.
He’d been tasked by you with getting groceries and knew you were particular about what kind of apples you liked.
When he finally pulls the list out, he hands it to the worker before him who smiles and points him to the section where the honey crisp apples are.
“Thank you!” He calls out, steering the buggy toward the section and grabbing a plastic bag to collect the four apples you wanted.
He’s about to put the last apple in the bag when he gets a notification from your AppleWatch.
‘My Wife 💗’ has fallen and their breathing has slowed down significantly. 9-1-1 has been called and they are 10 minutes out.
Tyler’s heart stops.
Within seconds, his legs are moving, sprinting out of the store the buggy full of groceries left behind.
He’ll come back another time. Right now, he had to get to his wife. He had to get to you.
He knew he was only five minutes away, but he let his foot hit the accelerator. Anything to get to you quicker.
When he finally—painstakingly—arrives at y’all’s house, your horse, Sugar, is galloping around the front yard, neighing happily to herself. He reaches for her, gently pulling her close.
“Where is she?” He asks her. He doesn’t wait for an answer. Instead, he jogs to the training ring to the right of the house where he finds your lifeless body.
He sprints at the sight of you, fear taking over all of his thoughts and he brushes the random strands of hair covering your face.
“Oh my god,” he whispers. “Oh my god. Baby? Can you hear me?”
He checks your pulse.
Good, steady but kind of weak.
Your breathing is slow, almost too slow for his taste. Your face is relaxed in unconsciousness and there’s a pretty bad gash on your forehead and the back of your head.
Tyler knows not to move you so he holds your hand, waiting and praying that the ambulance hurries.
The next five minutes feel like hours but the paramedics finally arrive.
“I think she fell and hit her head on the ground or a rock,” Tyler tells them.
He watches from the side as they take your vitals and get you ready to transfer to the ER.
“Do you want to ride with her?” One of the paramedics asks.
“No, I’ll follow behind in my truck,” he tells them.
———
At the hospital, Tyler looks down at you from his standing position next to your bed.
How could this have happened? When is she gonna wake up?
He rubs his eyes, checking his watch again to see that it’s almost 10 PM. he’s been here for the past few hours, waiting for you to wake up.
Unfortunately, for him, the doctor said that it might take a bit for you to wake up, especially because of the fall you took.
“She’ll wake up when she’s ready,” they said.
“When?” He’d asked.
“Within a few hours. She has a concussion so she needs to rest as much as she can.”
The waiting was the hardest part for him. He hated just standing around. He needed to do something, anything to make sure you were okay, to help you wake up. Worry begins to eat at him the longer he stays in the hospital room with you so Tyler decided it would be best to go to the cafeteria.
Only when he’s about to walk out the door, he hears you groan.
“Tyler?”
“Baby,” he cries, running back to your side. He takes your hand in his, kissing each knuckles before smiling down at you with happy tears stuck in his eyes. “How’re you feeling?”
“I’m okay,” you tell him. “Am I in the hospital?”
“Yeah,” he tells you, wiping his eyes. “What happened?”
“I was trying to give Sugar a little test run before the next race and she got spooked by a garden snake,” you recount. “I must’ve hit my head on a rock or something.”
“You did,” he tells you, voice quiet. “You scared the hell out of me.”
You look up into his green eyes and smile softly. Placing your hand on his cheek, you pull him down to kiss you.
The kiss is sweet and tender, something Tyler didn’t know he knew he needed until then.
“I love you, Ty,” you tell him.
“I love you too, Baby,” he hiccups, tears freely falling now. “You really did scare me. I didn’t know if you would be okay. If you’d d—”
He couldn’t bring himself to finish his sentence. Instead, he smiles down at you and kisses you again.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” he says instead.
“I am too,” you tell him. Then, smirking a bit, you add, “I would be pretty pissed if I died from falling off a horse.”
Tyler laughs at that. “I would be too.”
“When can I eat? And when can I leave?” You ask. “But most importantly, when can I eat?”
“Doctors said he wanted to keep you overnight,” he tells you. “I can get you something to eat if you want.”
“Okay, as long as it’s something filling. I have t eaten since… what time is it?”
“10:30 PM,” he tells you.
“Jesus Christ, since 8 AM this morning,” you marvel.
Tyler laughs, pecking your lips before standing. “I’ll get you a nice fat sandwich.”
“Sounds perfect.”
You watch as he walks away before saying, “And Tyler?”
He turns around. “Yes baby?”
“Walk slower, your ass looks really nice in those jeans.”
Tyler only laughs and obeys as he walks out the door.

The dominoes cascaded in a line...
“And with that I think that’s all we got this time. Tune in next time to find out the answer to that burnin’ question I know you all have - is it or is it not possible to shoot fireworks up into a movin’ tornado? Remember, if you feel it -”
The video playing on the screen of your phone cuts to black after one last wink to the camera and it makes your eyes roll. It is, however, paired with a smile. The little buzz you feel deep inside cuts through the already fading headache as you take another bite of your lunch and a deep sigh leaves you.
But the conversations going on all around you echoes against the walls of the room you’re sitting in and a pang of loneliness shoots through you instead.
It’d been easier to get things done with Kate sitting in the cubicle next to yours. The feeling is followed by a shot of baseless worry when you send her another message and it remains unread.
So maybe you had gotten a little more anxious after she came back from her trip home. She’d all but burst into your office with a wild and scared and excited look in her eyes when she told you she was heading back out into the field. You’d helped her pack and made her promise to stay safe and tried to push away the uneasiness you felt knowing she’d be out there in the middle of a storm.
One check in with her quickly turned into several. Every twelve hours on the dot you were sending her a picture of you sitting at home or at work and Kate indulged you by responding with pictures of her wherever she happened to be. Beside a shiny white Storm Par truck. The inside of a dingy motel room. A field surrounded by dark gray skies. Back home in her childhood room.
And then, eventually, a hospital bed. You’d called her seconds after receiving that one with anxious tears in your eyes and she answered with no hesitation. The stories she told you over the phone of her last few days back in Oklahoma had your blood pressure skyrocketing and your heart constricting inside you.
You knew what these storms were like. You’d grown up in a place similar to the one Kate grew up in. You’d watched them on screens and seen the devastation and learned about them all you could. But this was different. This one was huge. It was bad. And on top of that, your best friend had thrown herself into the middle of it and made a discovery that could change everything. Because of course she would.
Kate had come home with bruises and cuts already almost completely healed but it didn’t stop you from clinging to her for a few days. She was kind enough to never mention a word of it. To never point out the fear that she knew still plagued you a little bit. But she always reassured you she was okay and that was enough.
She was better than okay, you figured, considering she’d immediately started telling you about the nicer parts of her trip. Like seeing her mom again and catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.
Including these, apparently. Ones you didn’t yet know the names of. Ones who were coming into town. Ones that, by the look of it, she wanted you to meet. And go out with. With her. And it made all the anxiety fade away because she really was okay. She was healing a little more. It made you smile.
The timer you’d set went off and you knew that the comfort of your apartment was within reach now. As soon as you wrangled your tour groups, treated them to some delightfully dramatized demonstrations, and sat them in their seats for the space show you were home free.
Except Kate had several hours left until she got off work. And she had something to explain to you. And you were almost positive the curiosity would kill you before then.
“Okay, so,” Kate settles a little deeper into the couch and turns to face you while the credits of the movie you’d been watching while finally eating dinner played on the screen. “I think you’ll really like them.”
“Oh I absolutely trust your judgment,” You turn to face her too and you can see her excitement ready to bubble over. “Tell me about them.”
It doesn’t take much prompting other than that and a smile flashes on Kate’s face. “Well, I met them back home. They’re this big group of storm chasers, too, and the five of them are actually the ones who helped me adapt the formula and research I'd been working on and were gonna help test it in the field but you know how that ended.”
“Wait hang on -”
“They’re okay,” Kate knows what question you’re about to ask before you even have a chance to ask it. You’d always been an empathetic person from the moment she’d met you. You’d noticed the little things about her and listened when she finally opened up to you and never for a moment let her feel alone. If there was one constant in her life here it was you. “A little banged up but alright for the most part.”
Your brows furrow and you give her a look that feels much too serious for you when you ask, “What does ‘for the most part’ mean?”
“Well there might’ve been a minor injury or two but it’s okay!”
“Kate, I swear -”
“Logically speaking, if the injuries were more than minor they wouldn’t be coming to New York City of all places.”
“I guess you have a point.” You sigh, defeated, knowing very well she has a good point and Kate takes it as a win. “So are they here for you or for some fun?”
“Very funny,” Kate gives you a deadpanned look but another grin breaks across her face soon after. You watch as she reaches for her phone and the blanket around her shoulders slips down a little bit. She starts scrolling as she talks to you. “They’re doing an interview on some talk show, I can’t remember the name of it. That’s what they're here for technically but I convinced them to stay a couple days longer. Figured it’d give me a chance to introduce them to you that way.”
“Wait an interview?” You stare at her again and try to recall every single little detail she’s told you about her trip all at once. A frown appears on your face when you can’t immediately figure it out. “Who exactly are you friends with?”
Kate flips her phone towards you and on the screen is a picture of five people. “They call themselves Tornado Wranglers.”
You don’t say a single word. The only thing you do is stare and you must look shocked or confused or completely dumbfounded because Kate continues quickly.
“It's a weird name, I know. I still can’t figure out what it means exactly but I promise you’ll think they’re really cool too!”
Kate is saying words, you know that. You know she’s speaking but you don’t hear her, not while your mind is spinning like one of those storms she loves chasing so much. She tells you their names, that much you process. Dani. Dexter. Boone. Lily. Tyler.
“They, uh,” You force the words out of your mouth after she’s given you a brief explanation of what they each do. “They definitely sound like Tornado Wranglers”
“They’re supposed to get in tomorrow.” Kate drops her phone and her eyes narrow as she takes in the look on your face. Your eagerness has faded away and has been replaced with something else. Something she can’t quite pinpoint. “It’s okay if you don’t want to meet them! I know you’ve been busy with work lately and it is kinda last minute. We don’t have to -”
“Kate,” You launch yourself forward far enough to take her hand that wasn’t holding her phone. The look is shaken off your face quickly and just like that the excitement is back. She relaxes a little bit at the sight of it. “I’d be happy to meet your friends.”
Kate hears the unspoken words between you. The way you’re reminding her of how much love and care you have for her. Of the way you’re right there, no matter what. It puts her at ease the way it has so many times before.
I spent 2 hours editing this fake iOS phone contact screenshot to put onto Christine's phone in one (1) panel of the comic and was too proud of the end result to not share it lmao
I can't lie, way too much of that time went into semi-matching fonts...

“I used to be picked on in high school. People were like ‘you look like Jason Priestly!’ And I think I was like really overweight when I was in ninth grade high school. People were telling me if Leonardo DiCaprio was to ever get fat I was probably what he would look like."
