“It is very likely, Kurt,” Fendie threw herself back against the mattress again and stared at the patching ceiling. There were small holes between layers of metal sheet and thick Brahmin leather. It was sufficient enough to block out most of the wind and harsh weather. She recalled how many hours they had worked on improving this shelter so the elders and young ones could at least have one place warm to crash at the end of the hard day: She had to leave that all behind soon now. Very soon, probably.
“He might have circled around my last known location and asked every single person he suspected I have been conversed with. Logic and information processing had been our strong suit. I would guess whey he talked to you, he figured out by the tone of your voice you might be the last person who stumbled upon me. The rest was..well, now history.”
“It does not matter anymore. They will send another one out soon enough, as soon as they realised this one is gone. It is only he matter of time another one come prodding, sniffing every path I had been taking. I think I will have no choice to go as quick as I can manage.” She sighed.
“Go?” Gladys happened to step into the door with a bowl of Brahmin broth and heard the last bits of her words: “Where ye going, chicky? Ye just gone through this thing a few days ago and now ye wanna go? Are you mad? Nonononono, ye ain’t going anywhere. We will not allow it.”
“Nop. Don’t even think about it.” She looked at the blonde sternly.
Fendie sighed even more heavily. She would have no choice but to sneak out.
Though he doesn’t say anything during her explanation Kurt’s eyes betray what’s on his mind. Guilt creeps over his face. But, he had already expected what she just confirmed, and thus doesn’t look surprised. Crossing his arms he looks at his feet instead of her, a noncommittal grunt of acknowledgement his only response.
While Gladys and Fendie are butting heads, he slides his glasses back and collects himself with a deep breath. There’s a smudgy finger print on one of the lenses but he ignores it for now. The argument between the girls has come to a convenient lull and he doesn’t hesitate to use it.
”I’m gonna leave you two at it, I gotta go prepare my stuff.” Pointing at Fendie he addresses her, though he’s quite sure she’s already made up her mind about leaving as well, ”I agree, you’ve been through some real shit and a little rest wouldn’t hurt. Just for a couple of days, alright?”
Turning to Gladys he continues, ”Now that Fendie’s woken up, I’m gonna head out in the morning. If I don’t run into you again before that, I wanna thank you for everything. I really meant it, thank you Gladys.”
