The stone-cutters society & the society of the blind eye
Season 6 episode 12 of the simpsons starts off with homer facing a bunch of small problems during his day, the handyman refuses to help the family fix a leak, traffic on his way to work, and uncomfortable chair at work while his coworkers have a much better chair etc. He desperately wants to know why so he decides to follow his coworkers only to find out that they are in a secret society called the stonecutters. He desperately wants to join but is told he can only join if he saves a stonecutter or if hes the son of one. At dinner the next day, his father, grandpa simpson, tells him that hes infact a stonecutter, meaning homer had every right to be one as well.
Upon joining, Homer finds out that all the members are given numbers instead of names and that theres multiple chapters (groups) of stonecutters all over the world. They also believe that one day a chosen one will come and lead all of them.
Because he is now a stonecutter, all of his problems dissolve on its own, the handyman is willing to help because hes also a stonecutter, he gets access to a secret tunnel to avoid traffic and he gets a new chair for work.
Supposedly, all the founding fathers were stonecutters.
All the stonecutters really do though, is drinking and hanging out together, they dont do any charity work, dont do anything for the government or such, itâs unknown where they even get all the resources from for all of their advantages.
By accident and out of stupidity, Homer uses the stonecutters parchment as a bib to eat ribs which enrages the other stonecutters and has him kicked out of the society.
He is forced to take off his stonecutter clothes and had to walk home naked dragging the stone of shame behind him. Until they see his birthmark, which is the same one as the one the chosen one supposedly has.
Homer becomes the new stonecutter-leader but realizes pretty quickly that being the chosen just means you dont have friends, you just have followers, which makes him feel sad and hollow. Lisa offers him the advice to use it for something good. So homer uses it to have every stonecutter participate in charity.
Eventually every member becomes so fed up with working for charity that they all leave and form a new society in which homer isnât allowed into.
Season 2 episode 7 of gravity falls starts off with lazy susan cleaning up and closing up the diner when she stumbles upon dwarves and gets frightened. She tries to call someone but shes kidnapped by two anonymous men in red hoods with a crossed out eye on them before she can even finish her sentence.
We then skip over to dipper in the attic trying to figure out who the author of the diary is once again until hes distracted by mabel who runs in holding a bottle-message send by her mermaid ex boyfriend, she gets her hopes up expecting him to ask for a reunion but instead he send her the letter to inform her of his upcoming arranged marriage.
Mabel is devastated by the news and dipper tries cheering her up by telling her how his mission at finding the author isnât a great success either. Mabel stops him as she notices a small label on the authors computer which reads âmcgucket labsâ which leads dipper and mabel to believe old man mcgucket to be the author of the journal.
They rush to soos and wendy and beg them to take the twins to old man mcgucket. They drive to him and confront him. Mcgucket is visibly confused and he tells them how he cant even remember who or what he used to be. He says everything before 1982 is hazy to him.
Dipper shows him a few pages of the book and he shows no reaction until they get to the page speaking about the society of the blind eye to which mcgucket gets visibly startled and falls down to the floor yelling: âMY MIND, THEY DID SOMETHING.â yet he cant recall what exactly happened.
Dipper puzzles together quickly that mcgucket mustve seen something he shouldnt have and someone or something messed with his mind. Mcgucket tells them that his earliest memory is at the history museum, they all rush to the museum to look for clues.
They see a shadowy figure running around and decide to follow it. It leads them to a small cozy room and vanishes. They search for where he couldve went and find a secret passageway leading somewhere downstairs.
They go down the stairs and see a cult-like ritual being performed on lazy susan. Shes chained to a chair and questioned on her sighting of the dwarves. They then take out some type of hair-dryer looking machine and point it straight at her she yells out and suddenly goes numb. She cant remember the dwarves at all, they completely wiped her memories and then lead her back home. They store her memory in a container and send it off to be stored through a pipe.
They then split up into two groups to find mcguckets memories. Wendy and Mabel stay back to lookout for the members of the blind eye society and soos, dipper and mcgucket look for the memories.
They follow the pipe that took lazy susanâs memories away and find all of the memories. They stumble upon a bunch of memories of people all over town. They take mcguckets memories and without realizing it, set off a sensor that way underneath mcgucketâs memories.
Meanwhile wendy and mabel get the idea to erase mabelsâ summer romances out of her head. She types in âsummer romanceâ and just as shes about to use it, something starts beeping all over the place.
Dipper, soos, mabel and wendy are all caught by the society. As it turns out, a lot of the regular towns people are members of the society. The leader of the society then explains that due to supernatural stuff occurring in town, their founder invented this device that could erase memories in order to prevent people who saw unexplainable things from going insane.
Just as theyre about to erase the groupsâ memories, mcgucket comes and saves them. They then all try to get their hands on mcguckets memories, in the end the group looses the memories to the societyâs leader. He tries to erase their memories once and for all but mcgucket stands infront of them taking the blast coming from the device. But because mcguckets mind is already so damaged, the device doesnt work on him. They get mcguckets memories back and erase the members memories of the society of the blind eye.
After letting the members of the society go, they look at mcguckets memories and find out that he was the Assistant of the author and that he quit working as his assistant and developed a machine that helped him forget everything. He also was the founder of the blind eye society. In his memories, we also see him going insane over time as a sideeffect of overusage of the device.
They vandalize mabelâs ex crushesâ photograph to help her get over him and then head back home.
where do these two societies overlap
First of all, the robes look pretty similar and they both have a sort of leader. Biggest difference is the core reason and belief within the societies. Blind eye is there to remove peoples memories and they genuinely believe theyre helping others with this, stonecutters are a drinking group who believes in a chosen one thats meant to lead them. Another similarity i saw is that the members arent government officials or smth stereotypical but theyre regular reoccurring characters within their shows. Also the stonecutters mentioned multiple chapters of their society existing all over the world. What if, the stone cutters are another part of this unit? What if mcgucket didnt just found the society of the blind eye but something bigger that also parted itself up and spread all over the world. Maybe the stonecutters also remove memories but didnt tell homer because they didnt trust him to keep it to himself? Idk im just making up theories here, tell me what you think connects the two!!
