Happy Valentines Day!
And what better way to celebrate Valentines Day than to read 12th century woman medieval mystic literature? To celebrate love, here are some excerpts from "Spiritual Exercises" by 12th century nun, Gertrude von Heftla. Talk about taking "Jesus is my boyfriend" to the next level! 😳
"Love arouses the soul: Ah! Wake up, o soul! How long will you sleep? Hear the word that I announce to you. Above the heavens there is a king who is held by desire for you. He loves you with his whole heart, and he loves beyond measure. He himself loves you so dulcetly and he himself cherishes you so faithfully that, for your sake, he humbly gave up his kingdom. Seeking you, he endured being seized as a thief. He himself loves you so heartily, cherishes you so vigorously, is jealous for you so dulcetly, is zealous for you so powerfully that, for you, he cheerfully surrendered his flower-like body to death. This is he who washed you in his blood; who, through his death, set you free. How long will he wait for you to love him in return?"
"Behold, I am approaching you, O consuming fire, my God. Ah! Devouring me, a speck of dust, in the fiery vigor of you love, consume me utterly and absorbe me into yourself. Behold, I am approaching you, O my dulcet light. Ah! Let your face light up over me so that my darkness may become like noonday in your presence. Behold, I am approaching you, O most blessed union. Ah! Make me one with you by the glue of living love. "
"Oh love, Oh Christ, to see you is to be in ectasy in God. To cling to you is to be joined to God by a nuptial contract. O love, not light-bearing but God-bearing, come to me now bountifully that I may dulcetly melt in you. Brought to nothing in myself, let me flow into you completely that from now on I may never be capable of collecting myself again, even temporarily, but may stay glued to you eternally. Look upon me and make me acknowledge and know you. You cherished me first. You chose me when I had not chosen you. You run up spontaneously to everyone you thirsts for you: the whiteness of the eternal light glistens on your forehead."
"How beautiful you are, O God, Charity, and how lovely, how wondrous and how remarkable in delights, oh dearest one. Oh love, at the sunset of my life, deign to rise for me early in the morning, and when you see me leave this place of sojourn, make me draw eternal life in you. And grant me so to end this exile that, with you, I may be able to go, without hindrance, to the nuptials of the Lamb, and under your guidance to discover the true spouse and friend, and be coupled to him in your arms so dearly that, for eternity, I will nevermore be capable of being separated from his grasp."

Students, take courage!
It's that time of the year again. Finals, assignments, essays and exams. It seems like it will never end, that we will never be enough.
But I will tell you one thing - an exam cannot measure your worth. Your final grades do not determine who you are. The world values people by things like productivity, intelligence, success. But what does that all matter in the end?
Beloved of the Lord, do not be fooled by what the world offers. We have something far better. We are the children of God, chosen by Him from before the foundation of the world! In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us!
So do not lose sight of who you are. You are valuable and loved! God has washed you clean so that you stand before Him not as miserable sinners and failures, but His own beloved child. And you shall have an excellent inheritance! Even if it seems like you might fail - and even if you do fail - this is not the end for you.
So do not give up.
And do not forget! Up until the moment when you have written your final exam, it is not over. You haven't failed yet!
Even if you haven't paid attention in class all year, there is still time to learn. God has given you a brain, your reason and all your senses. He hasn't made you an idiot. He has put you in this place for a reason.
Of course you will not be able to learn everything all at once. But if you sit down and start going over one lecture slide at a time, by the end at least you will have learned something. And something is better than nothing.
A 60% is always better than a 0%. A badly written essay is better than no essay at all. You don't have to do things perfectly. We aren't perfect. We are all sinners. That is why we must rely on God.
So take courage! Forget what is behind - how you should have paid better attention in class, how you should have started earlier, etc - and strain toward what is ahead.
Although we do not always know it, we are given the vocation of students - to study and to learn - for a purpose. All we can do is trust in Him, and study one page at a time, knowing that we have a God who cares for us and loves us.
“Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.”

You know what, I've never actually watched the Sister Act. Even so, for whatever reason this song has been stuck in my head recently. XD
The traditionalist Lutheran in me cannot help but think that in many ways this isn't a very good worship song. The focus is entirely on what *I* do, when it should really be on what Jesus has done for us! But still... I do love Him! And I will follow Him! Even though sometimes we will stray. Even though sometimes we'll mess up so badly we'll think we never should have walked this path to begin with. But even in the midst of our unfaithfulness Jesus will be there with us. And when we are lost, He will reach out to us and call out to us, offering His love and forgiveness. Thinking about such a beautiful thing, how can I not love Him? And after He calls out to us, blessing us abundantly with his grace and mercy, is it not a wonderful thing to say in reply: "Yes Lord! I will follow!" knowing that no matter how high the mountains are, God will bring us safely to our destination!?
Well that being said maybe the lyrics aren't really the most theologically sound (from what I understand it's originally just a secular love song XD). But at the very least... it's pretty catchy!

There's a bunch of graffiti scribbled on the wall next to me at the university library.
"We live in a society! Rise up!"
"Do not stress out so much. Do what your heart tells you." (Someone else: "& smoke some weed!") (Someone else: "<- This!")
"As you think so shall you be"
But best of all is this: Psalm 119:37.
Which, when you look it up: "Turn my eyes away from worthless things; revive me with Your word."
Well played, graffiti artist. I will stop looking at graffiti now.
