Scott always got on well with the Dogs that came into the clinic, Deaton had said he had a way with animals even before he had been bitten. If he never had had asthma, Scott would have asked for a dog, a big golden Labrador, or maybe a Chocolate one, or a mix breed.
But that was not to happen, in short doses as he got older he could be around fur bearing animals, which was why Melissa let him work at the Clinic, he just had to remember to take his anti-histamines and inhaler. So he got to play with the Dogs when they came in, and were kept over night. Scott could even put up with the cats, though after the bite he would do rock paper scissors with Isaac over who got to deal with the spitting hairballs.
The day was over any Scott and Isaac were shutting the clinic, doing the end of day jobs like feeding the animals and making sure they were watered and clean, cleaning up up the examine rooms and washing them down, and taking out the trash.
Scott had won the current match with Isaac, so he was taking out the trash while Isaac put the food into the cat cages, Scott couldnât help but sniggered as he heard Isaac yelp as one of the cats, probably the large ginger tom, took a swipe at him. It was only fair as Isaac had laughed at Scott when the ginger fur ball had nearly taken of a finger with itâs claws.
Opening the back door and lifting the trash bag over to the skip, Scott tossed it in. He was about to go back in when he heard a whine coming from round the side of the skip. Frowning he walked round and looking down he saw the cause of the whine, a box with five mix coloured Labrador puppies was on the ground.
Scott bent down and examined the box fora note, but couldnât find one. The pups looked fairly clean and not malnourished. Though having left them in a box by the back door, he expected they were abandoned. Frowning at the unfairness of it, Scott bent down to pick up the box, the five pups just stared at him open eyes and let out a scared whine.
"Aww, no little dudes, I wonât hurt you. Iâm just gonna take you in somewhere warm for tonight till we can figure out what to do." Scott tried explaining, more for the reassuring tone than the pups understanding him. Leaning in again the pups shifted but didnât make a fuss.
Lifting them up, Scott took the pups inside and set the box on the examine table. Isaac came through sucking his hand and mumbling about hell cats, he stopped short when he saw the box and Scott trying to reassure the frightened animals.
"Someone left them by the skip at the back door, probably expecting us to find them when we came out. Poor little guys, theyâre petrified." Scott told Isaac, never taking his eyes of the pups. "They donât look injured and protocol is to give them a flea bath to stop any mites or that spreading. If you wanâna take the bike Iâll be home later." He said looking at Isaac and fishing out his keys.
Isaac snorted and shook his head. âNo, I think Iâll give you a hand, otherwise you could be hear all night. Scott gave Isaac an appreciative smile and Isaac could help but smile back at the young True Alpha who was like living sunshine.
Scott got gloves and handed a pair to Isaac and carefully they went through the checks Deaton had shown them to make sure the pups werenât hurt, or showing any sickness. They passed the first checks so they would be fine till Deaton got in in the morning and could give them a full examination.
Isaac had gotten them water and pup food appropriate for their rough age and the pups subduely ate and drank the offered items. The reserved manners made Scott and Isaac exchanged worried frowns.Â
After their meal, the pair took them into the grooming station and between them they got the pups washed and treated for fleas and ticks, again through the whole process they were reserved and very un-pup like.
"Who ever abandoned them must have done something, itâs like they donât want to trust anything." Scott told Isaac as they sat in the pen with the pups drying them off.
"Maybe who ever left them got them out of a bad situation but couldnât look after them." Isaac theorised as he gentle towelled a Chocolate coloured Lab.
Scott thought about that and nodded. âPossibly. Itâs not like they were mistreated physically, at least from what I can see, just I donât know. maybe lacking a pack or family bond. Like they were being raised without much interaction.â
Isaac sighed. âPoor little buggers.â He told Scott and looked at the solemn little face.
Scott lifted up the Golden one he was drying and turned it to look at him, as he sis the pup seemed to be evaluating him, like it was trying to under stand him. Scott chewed at his lower lip. âIâm gonâna try something.â he told Isaac, and as the Beta looked on, Scott slowly shifted and let the Wolf to the surface. He shook himself as the shift finished and looked at the pup with his glowing Alpha eyes. The pup just stared at him and then it raised a paw and almost booped Scott on the nose, like it was assuring itself this being that seemed like another Canine of some sort was real.
The pup let out a curious half whine, half howl, but it wasnât distressed. Scott smiled around his fangs, and with human nails gave the pup a reassuring scritch. The pup leaned into it and gave a short, but positive bark. The other pups slowly made their way across to the two in the Werewolves arms and Scott nodded to Isaac and Isaac shifted as well, the pups looking between the young Wolves. Then the ones on the ground pressed against the wolves and let out more sure sounding bark yelps. The little Chocolate Lab leaned towards Isaac after taking in the shifted features and gave Isaac a lick on the nose.
"I hope Mom wont mind." Scott said smiling at Isaac as the pair lifted the other pups into their laps and the pups became more animated.
Isaac frowned. âWhy?â He asked.
Scott shot him a rueful look as the golden Lab licked him and gave a happy yelp. âI think Iâve just adopted the pups into our Pack.â He said with a half grin. Isaac returned it and scritched the ears of the Choclate one, that had the same brown eyes as Scott. âThatâs not a bad thing.â He said and gave Scott his own happy smile, which Scott returned.
