“Noted.” Túrin was only half listening, but he knew better than to argue with Dayn on this point. It was not that he did not think their neighbours valiant - but they lacked skill, and proper training. At times they seemed more like liabilities than potential allies. He tried not to let that very private thought show, but he was sure it must slip through from time to time.

Finally, they drew up to the back door of their shared home. Túrin sighed with relief. “Here we are. In we go - I’ll sort supper.”

Dayn smiled wryly. He knew Túrin didn’t like taking anyone less wood-wise out into the forest. “My aunt and uncle, at least,” he amended; they were the village’s best and he had great faith in their skill.

He limped inside and sank down on his favourite seat with a groan. “All right, if you want to deal with supper, I’ll sit here and try to look decorative.”

At this moment Dany bounced in. “Col said you were here!” she exclaimed, running over to hug her parents gleefully.

Túrin noted that, privately. “Hm. Perhaps I shall pay our new neighbours a visit, if they are still keen on investing in the area.”

“...If you’re going to do that, then don’t go alone.” Dayn knew it was ridiculous even as he said it - if anyone was capable of defending themselves, Túrin was - but after the day he’d had, he was feeling overprotective. “Take some of the others from the village - they’ll be just as interested as you in keeping an eye on things, and if there’s trouble you’ll have backup.”

Túrin snorted. “Foolish, perhaps, but you came off the best in that encounter by a long way - I’d not regret that. I’ll see to the pony tomorrow, so you can make use of it on my return.”

He kept his idea of an excursion to Dany’s point of origin to himself; he knew this was not a topic, or discussion, that his partner enjoyed. But in truth, it had been gnawing at him for far longer than he had admitted, even to himself.

“Where did you find the orcs?”

“The thing I regret most is that I won’t be running for a while,” Dayn retorted, clinging to Túrin’s shoulder as his leg protested very pointedly. “But once we get back I’ll not object to sitting around in peace for a bit.”

They hobbled on for a bit, and he sighed, jerking a thumb over his shoulder. “Not quite half a morning’s walk that way.”

“So it is.” Túrin, who sensed that this was not an entirely comfortable topic of thought for his husband, dropped it. He had not been there the day Dayn had found the tiny baby girl, hidden in a tree. Abandoned? Or set aside to be safe from whatever threat had killed those she had been travelling with? Perhaps one day he would go back to the place, and see if he could find any answers there.

“Remind me to trade the pony in next week,” he said. “I think we need a bigger one.”

Dayn sighed. In truth, he often wondered the same thing Túrin did; where, and who, had their daughter come from? He had never hidden the truth from her, and she had accepted it with very little fuss. But he couldn’t help wondering what her birth parents had been like; whether her sunny temperament was inherited from them as her beauty was, or if it was what she had learned from him. Her scowl was certainly learned from Túrin, at least. The thought of her little face wearing that thunderous expression made him smile unconsciously.

“There’s always places to trade a horse,” was what he said out loud. “Wish it was here now, though. Stupid of me, getting hurt.”

“Mm. We’ll see. She has plenty of time to settle on what she is and isn’t.” Túrin gnawed on the inside of his cheek thoughtfully. “I do wonder, sometimes. Where she came from. Who she came from.”

Dayn couldn’t hide the wistful smile that crossed his face. “You and I both,” he repied, glad for the distraction as he limped along. “By looks alone I’ve always assumed her birth kin were of the House of Hador, but beyond that... well, we really know nothing. She was alone when I found her, and no signs of her family save the marks of a struggle some way away. They could have come from anywhere, been going anywhere...” He sighed. “We will probably never know. But she is of our people, and she’s ours. That’s all that’s important.”
