You never had a femme fatale awakening. You never got into spy/phantom thief vs detective antics or fighting as flirting or trading flirty one liners over guns pointing at each other. Oh they are DEFINITELY fucking, but their jobs and perspectives keep them from anything too emotionally intimate.
It's rare these types of pairings make it to their fifties, seeing two angry/tired gen xers flirting over guns? I need that. Inject that shit William Berkin style directly into my VEINS.
with the amount of self insert and self metaphorising Fujimoto has done in the past, I wonder if Denji throwing away the chainsaw to catch Asa is his way of taking a break from manga and dating/getting married or something (if so, I'm available)
The whole "choose Nayuta or being ChainsawMan" thing was Fujimoto trying to tell us how the conversation between him and his editor went when he found out his Twitter. "Choose your abominable Twitter page where you pretend to be your imaginary sister and promote yaoi OR choose the serialisation of your manga" 💀
i’ll never understand people who can’t make fun of their faves a little. like yes i love this character and would defend them to my grave but also they’re stupid sometimes and they do dumb things and imma make fun of them for it
This. Like, Makima is the most embarassing character in the whole show, pining after somebody who doesn't want her. Like oh my god girl you have SO MUCH power and you've likely watched every movie in existence and read every book in existence and you still don't know Utopia is a lie? Nobody taught you basic anthropology? Really, woman? Chasing a MAN? Her "man" spent more than half the show being inside a teenage boy...does she know how that sounds? 😭
Someone who IS me, my boyfriend, my father, my little brother, my mother, my Jungian shadow, my deepest darkest self. Every angry, morally gray, genocidal male character (*cough cough* Eren) is my babygirl.
The two extremes of the mommy issues spectrum are Junji Ito creating Tomie because he's terrified of women and Tatsuki Fujimoto creating Makima because he wants to be dominated by a woman.
Makima is so interesting, and she's absolutely my favorite character in the series. A lot of people hate her, and I get why, but she's so interesting to explore because the longer you think about her, the more and more layers you uncover.
I think it's super interesting that she wants to make her version of a perfect world. Having Chainsaw Man eat concepts like death and famine, something she claims humanity would be better of without, sounds good on the surface until you think about it for too long.
Denji himself asks her about her new world and how it would operate, asking her if crappy movies would still exist. She responds that they wouldn't as there would be no purpose for them, and I think that's such a smart way to show just how cataclysmic things would be if she'd gotten her way.
Sure, there'd be no suffering, but there'd be no freedom, either – no creativity. Life would feel sterile and, well, lifeless if it were completely under Makima's control. However; Makima also said she didn't mind losing, so long as Chainsaw Man ate her, which is an equally scary outcome.
If Chainsaw Man (not Denji) had eaten her as the control devil instead of as Makima, then the concept of control would disappear. Structures would break down, and people wouldn't be able to control even themselves because the very concept of control would be gone.
Either outcome would've been hell, but Denji managed to avoid either by eating her himself as Makima instead of as the control devil.
Aside from her plans, I was really struck by the tragedy of her character and the philosophical implications. We see her have a true moment of connection with Denji when, like him, she cries in the theatre after witnessing a mother hugging her son in a movie.
We learn later that all Makima wanted was love. She wanted to be loved and held and to form a genuine connection with someone she saw as an equal, something she can finally attain through her reincarnation as Nayuta.
But even then you have to wonder if she was truly evil. Not in the sense of how her trauma and loneliness affected her, though those still play a role, but more in the sense of whether she could help herself.
Just like how Power can't help being obsessed with blood as the blood fiend/devil, Makima likely couldn't help her desire for control as the control devil. It was woven into her being. It begs the old philosophical question of whether or not someone is truly evil if they can't control their nature.
I imagine she could've channeled those desires for control into something healthier and more productive had her childhood not been what it was.
Anyways, rambling done. I just adore Makima and wanted to talk about her some.
