Seth Jarvis x male!reader
cw: fluff, slight banter/teasing, Winnipeg, established relationship, inaccurate depiction of Seth's friends, reader is mentioned to be a special needs teacher.
Summary: You join Seth and his friends as they drive back to Winnipeg for the summer. You feel slightly out of place, being the quietest of the group, but after a few hours stuck in a small van, you start to feel more welcomed.
Duckies note: (pictures don't depict reader, they are only there for the aesthetic of the story) Thank you so much for my first request! I absolutely loved the prompt! I hope I did your request justice 🫶🏻. I realized after I finished writing that I strayed from the request quite a bit, so if you aren't happy with this, I would love to try and write another one for you! So lmk! I don't know very much about Seth's friends, but I do know two of them are named Lucas, so to split them, I called one Luke and one Lucas.
The house key that Seth had given you a few months ago unlocked the door with a simple turn and push. Loud music played from the kitchen, and a small smile crossed your lips as you listened to Seth humming along while utensils clanged together.
You gently placed the two plastic grocery bags you were holding down. You kicked your shoes aside, shuffling them to avoid a trip that Seth would undoubtedly make. As you turned your attention to the wall, your fingers instinctively sought out the key hook that Seth had installed with care just days after he had gifted you the spare key.
The hook gleamed in the soft light. Seth had playfully explained that it made his apartment feel more like a shared home, a place where your lives intertwined more deeply, even though you weren’t living together officially. The memory of his words warmed you like the beginning of a fire, making you subconsciously glow with warmth.
You could still feel the flutter of joy when he expressed that sentiment, his eyes bright with sincerity as he spoke. It was a powerful moment, reflecting both his trust and the growing intimacy in your relationship, which had flourished over the past six months. It reminded you of the comforting sensation of placing your cold, numb feet next to the comforting warmth of a newly lit fire, allowing the heat to envelop you completely. Being welcomed into his personal space was a treasured privilege; it was an invitation to explore not just his physical world but also the deeper connection you shared.
You picked up the bags again and walked down the hall, passing the stairs that led to the bedrooms and office, before entering the kitchen, where you immediately saw Seth making sandwiches while dancing to the music. He looked up, and a bright smile spread across his face. "Hi, sweets," he said, putting the butter knife down on the counter so he could take the bags from your hands and place a soft, lingering kiss on your cheek. “Was the store busy?” he asked, beginning to unpack the groceries on the counter beside the bagged sandwiches he had made.
"Not really. This one kid was running around the store. His mom kept calling him back, telling him to stay beside her, but he didn’t listen. He fell and faceplanted right in front of me," you said with a snicker. "He reminded me of you."
Seth looked at you with a mock offended expression. “You’re the one who got lost in a Walmart.”
“I told you that in confidence, and I was three!” you protested.
“That was only twenty years ago. How much could you have truly changed?” Seth joked, lightly tossing a bottle of water toward you. He nodded in its direction, indirectly telling you to drink some.
He resumed making sandwiches while you headed to the garage, knowing the red travel cooler was there. You easily carried it into the kitchen and started packing the Tupperware containers filled with vegetables and fruit at the bottom, placing the bagged sandwiches to the left so there was room for the bottles and cans that were being cooled in the fridge.
“When are the boys coming to pick us up?” you asked, placing a few boxes of crackers in a blue fabric bag.
“Sloan texted me about half an hour ago. He said they were packing up the van, so they should be here soon.”
You nodded, tensing your shoulders slightly, a reaction that didn’t go unnoticed by Seth.
“You okay?” he asked, furrowing his brow. He wrapped his arms around your shoulders in a hug, and you hugged him back immediately. You weren't typically a touchy person, something Seth had to adjust to at the beginning of your relationship. However, nearly eight months in, you began to feel more comfortable with his affectionate nature. It all started with holding hands. Initially, you thought it was meaningless and a display of unwanted possessiveness. But as Seth held your hand more often, you realized it was less about possession and more about comfort. At the same time, hugging became more common in your relationship. While hugs had always made you feel claustrophobic and restricted, with Seth, you only felt comfort. You found yourself constantly craving his affection. Subconsciously, you were always reaching for his hand or yearning for a hug whenever he was away on road trips during hockey season.
“Yeah,” you replied, leaning into his touch a little more. Seth pulled back slightly to give you a knowing look, revealing that he could tell you weren’t being entirely honest. You laughed under your breath and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “Your friends like me, right?” you asked, embarrassment lacing your tone.
Seth furrowed his brows again and gently pushed a piece of hair out of your face that had been about to poke your eye.
“Of course they do! Why wouldn’t they?”
You shrugged dismissively. “I’m just overthinking things.” Although not untrue, it wasn’t entirely true either. You knew it came as a shock to both Seth’s friends and family when he announced he was dating you. He had never shown much attention to men before you, having only dated women before. Seth claimed he always knew he was on the homosexual scale, but never felt the need to label himself or share with anyone; he was comfortable with just being himself.
Seth gave you a knowing squeeze before letting you go, returning to the fridge to grab the cooled drinks. “Thank you for taking the long way to Winnipeg with me.”
Your cheeks flushed as you shrugged nonchalantly. “It seemed really important for me to get to know your friends. What better way to bond than with a 25-hour car ride?”
Seth chuckled and came back over to take your hands. His thumbs rubbed over your knuckles in that absentminded way he always did. “Still, not a lot of people would do this.” You smiled at him again.
As the heavy front door thudded shut behind you and Seth, you placed the cooler down to grab your keys from your pockets. You stepped out into the sun-drenched day, greeted by the sight of a white minivan parked idly at the curb. A group of guys were gathered around, laughter spilling out from their animated conversation.
“Jarvy!” one of them shouted, his voice filled with excitement as he rushed forward to envelop Seth in a hearty embrace. You stood a few paces behind them, the weight of the red cooler resting at your feet.
One of the guys from the van, with tousled hair and an easy smile, approached you with a friendly nod. “Need help bringing anything over?” he asked, his voice smooth and inviting. Your mind raced to the packing you had done just before leaving, and you beamed back at him, appreciating his offer. “Could you take this,” you replied, glancing down at the cooler that held the snacks and drinks, “to the van while I go back in and get the Stanley Cup?”
Without hesitation, Bryan, whose name you just remembered, nodded enthusiastically, reached down to grab the cooler, and made his way back to the van, where someone had already popped the trunk open to accommodate the goodies.
Meanwhile, Seth was caught up in the moment, exchanging hearty greetings with his friends and their camaraderie. With a burst of enthusiasm, he jumped in to help you, lifting both his suitcase and yours with apparent ease, the muscles in his arms flexing beneath his fitted shirt.
You took a deep breath as you forced your gaze away and turned back towards the house.
You focused on balancing the bright silver Stanley Cup in your arms, careful not to knock it against the door frame as you exited. As the sunlight hit the polished surface, it glimmered like a beacon of achievement. You gently placed it on the sidewalk, taking a moment to appreciate the trophy.
Turning around to secure the door, you made sure to check each lock with a determined hand and peeked through the window beside the door to confirm that all the lights were off. Satisfied, you finally turned back, just in time to see Seth approaching you. He had picked up the large cup with a boyish grin.
He leaned into you, pressing a soft kiss to your shoulder, the affectionate gesture making your heart flutter a little. “Ready?” he asked, his eyes bright with excitement. You smiled softly at him, your heart swelling with warmth from the day’s events and his presence. “Mentally, yes. Physically, though,” you admitted with a hint of humour, “I’m dreading the pain my tailbone will feel in about four hours.”
The van was packed to capacity, filled with loud laughter and boisterous chatter that echoed off the walls, much to your annoyance. Despite your growing headache, you plastered a smile on your face, trying to blend in with the jovial atmosphere. You nestled into the back bench, sandwiched between Seth and Matt, your hand resting lightly on Seth’s knee, a comforting connection amid the chaos.
You had been on the road for only an hour, but the two Kickstart Mountain Dews you had drunk were already causing an urgent sensation in your bladder. You could feel it pressing insistently against your urethra, demanding relief in about half an hour. On the seat between Seth’s thighs, a large bag of some generic brand of gummy candies sat enticingly, the air around it filled with a sugary aroma. The caffeine buzz was starting to take its toll, making your hands tremble as a minor side effect of the energy drinks combined with your stationary position.
Seth noticed and laughed, whether it was at you or something one of the boys said, you weren’t entirely sure.
He placed the hand that wasn’t digging through the sugary gummies on the hand that was resting on his knee. He started shaking his own leg, not being able to hold still for more than a few minutes.
By the second hour, the lively banter began to subside. It seemed that everyone had switched gears from high-energy antics to more subdued activities, primarily eating their snacks or scrolling through their phones. The chatter faded into a low hum, punctuated by the occasional bursts of laughter as people exchanged jokes.
Popcorn was flying past everyone’s heads as Noah ended up throwing it to people, trying to get them to catch it in their mouths, which had not ended up the way anyone had thought it would.
His eyes landed on you, and immediately, you shook your head, but Seth encouraged you, stating you were “the best at catching things in your mouth.” So, you opened your mouth and caught the buttery piece of popcorn in your mouth, earning loud cheers from all the men, including a light jostling from Seth.
By the third hour, the noise level began to fluctuate once more. Conversations about the Stanley Cup, which was securely nestled in the trunk alongside a jumble of suitcases, had been replaced by discussions centred around daily life, school, and shared experiences.
Suddenly, Bryan, who sat in the middle seat in front of you, turned around, craning his neck over the backrest with genuine curiosity. “Jarvy mentioned you didn’t work through the summer. What do you do?” His eyes sparkled with interest, drawing your attention.
Your eyebrows shot up in surprise at being singled out, but you swallowed your nerves and smiled lightly. “I’m an elementary school teacher,” you replied softly, your voice barely rising above the din of the van. Just as Luke, who sat to the left of Bryan, was about to dive into another question, Seth interjected confidently. “He works with special needs kids,” he declared, wrapping an arm around your shoulders with a proud smile plastered across his face.
A warm blush crept up your cheeks, and you attempted to hide it by focusing intently on your lap.
Lucus chuckled from the passenger seat, adding his remark with a teasing grin, “So that’s why you can handle Jarvy. He’s his own kind of special.” A ripple of laughter echoed from Sloan, who was at the wheel, clearly amused.
You laughed, leaning into Seth’s side, grateful for his supportive presence. He feigned an offended expression, pouting in playful indignation, but the slight upward curve at the corner of his lips indicated that the jest hadn’t truly stung him.
As the hours dragged on toward the tenth, the sun had dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow inside the van. You found yourself nestled comfortably against Seth, your head resting on his shoulder. The peacefulness enveloped you as you drifted into sleep, feeling secure in his embrace. His arm was protectively wrapped around you, ensuring you wouldn’t accidentally roll away and hit your head against the hard surface of the van. In his other hand, he held his phone. He lazily scrolled through Instagram, and his unlimited data plan fueled his addiction to the app.
Matt leaned against the wall of the van, his head resting against the small back seat window. He held his phone loosely in his hand, watching a movie he had downloaded, his AirPods resting in his ears. He glanced over at you both and smiled softly, a knowing expression on his face.
Sensing that someone was looking at him, Seth turned his head slowly, careful not to disturb you. He caught Matt’s teasing gaze and mouthed a curious ‘What?’ at his friend. Matt simply raised an eyebrow in response, a smirk playing on his lips before he turned his attention back to his movie.
Seth shook his head dismissively, a smile creeping onto his face as he planted a gentle kiss on the top of your head, relishing in the moment before returning to his phone screen.
The van turned into the parking lot of a small gas station on the side of the highway. You woke up to the sound of doors opening and people talking and groaning as they stretched their legs out.
Seth looked down to see if you were still asleep, but when he saw your tired eyes open, he smiled brightly. “Good morning, sleepyhead.” He said softly as he kissed your forehead. “We’re just stopping to get some gas, refill the snacks and use the washroom.”
You nodded and pecked his lips before sitting up and stretching. “How long was I asleep for?” You ask, your throat slightly croaky from sleep.
“An hour or two,” Seth answered while stretching his back. You and Seth stepped out of the van after Bryan and Luke folded down the middle bench to make it easier to climb out. Seth climbed out first and then turned around, offering you his hand to help you over the fabric seats. You gratefully accepted his help and, with a bit of struggle, climbed over. Once he knew you were safely on both your feet, he lifted your hand to his lips and placed a gentle kiss on your knuckles.
You heard someone teasingly say “oooohhh” before Seth turned around and playfully pushed someone you assumed was Sloan, based on the jacket barely visible in the moonlight.
You and Seth ended up being the last of the group still outside since Seth had offered to pay for the gas. The smell of gasoline filled both of your senses, but it was drowned out by Seth’s cologne as he held his arm around you, pushing you against him. He rested his face on the side of your head and kissed it, humming softly.
You looked up at Seth with a confused smile on your face. “For what?”
“For being you.” He said it like it was the simplest answer. You smiled and kissed him lightly. When you tried to pull away, Seth chased your lips with a slight huff. “I love you.”
You blushed and closed your eyes, deciding to extend the kiss, much to Seth’s enjoyment. “I love you too.” You mumbled against him. You could feel his smile before you both pulled away.
