Sirius is a shitty single person on Valentineâs day. 1 of 1001 different ways that Remus and Sirius could, in theory, end up together. Part of a series Iâm writing for and with @remus-mxxny based on our characterizations.
[remember that scene of peter and gwen in the closet in TASM2? this is that scene but it's wolfstar and sirius is hiding from filch.]
Remus hated only one thing about being a prefect: rounds. He spent most of the time trying to multitask, reading while walking or reciting his notes in his head. More often than not he would return to the dorm, mind racing with assignments he still had to do and guilt about wasted time when he could have been revising. He also hated catching his friends. When he first became a prefect, his friends took advantage of his shifts, working on new pranks and acheming when they knew they were safe. Since James started dating Lily and Peter started taking his studies more seriously after getting a stern talking to from McGonagall, Sirius would scheme on his own, wrecking havoc that Remus would occasionally catch him doing and look the other way.
He and Sirius were⌠something. He didnât know one-hundred percent what they were, but they had certainly crossed beyond friendship. There were lingering touches and secret snogs in alcoves or empty classrooms, furtive touches and whispered promises in the heat of the moment. No one knew about this shift in their friendship and they didnât talk about it. Well, until recently.
Last week, when they were wrapped up in each otherâs arms tucked away in the empty Muggle Studies classroom, Sirius told him, I donât want to hide anymore. Remus was frozen, confused, speechless. He didnât know what to say because he didnât know what that meant. Before either of them could clarify, they had to make a speedy exit when they heard the door knob jostle and so Remus never got to talk to him about it.
Perhaps Remus had been avoiding a moment alone with Sirius because he was terrified for the end of that conversation. He assumed this meant the end of their arrangement or whatever was going on. Sirius was sick of hiding, so that meant they were done. Sirius could wipe his hands of him and go back to the revolving door of women, who were still trailing after him like lovesick puppies. Remus excelled at avoidance and he would cling to that to avoid the not-quite breakup for as long as possible.
Even so, with exams coming up, they spent less and less time together. Most of Remusâ free time was spent studying and revising and moments alone together were few and far between.
Remus missed him.
He walked down the hall, heading back to the grand staircase when he walked straight into Sirius. He reached out immediately to steady his friend, who broke out into a relieved grin.
âMoony,â he breathed in relief. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWhat are you doing here?â Remus echoed, not letting go of him. They were alone in the hall and Merlin, he didnât even care if they were caught.
Sirius glanced over his shoulder and down the hall. His eyes widened and he grabbed Remusâ hand, dragging him off into a broom cupboard. As soon as the door was shut, Sirius pulled out the map and Remus could see Filch heading toward them. Remus cast silencing and notice-me-not charms.
âYouâre in trouble,â Remus whispered and couldnât help a smile.
âYeah,â Sirius said with an air of duh. âThere may have been an accident in the potions lab.â
âAccident?â Remus wasnât sure why he asked when he knew the answer. Filchâs footsteps lingered in the hall outside the broom cupboard, but he was just pacing back and forth, not getting closer.
âSemantics,â replied Sirius with a wink. He folded the map back up and looked at Remus. The closet was small and cramped. One wrong move and all of the cleaning supplies would tumble off the shelves and cause a mess. They were forced to be pressed against each other and Remus really didnât mind.
âYou didnât answer my question,â he continued. âWhy are you here?â
âIâm on rounds,â Remus explained. âJust finishing up, actually. Before I ran into you.â
They both froze when they heard loud shouting coming from Filch and Slughorn out in the hallway. Even with the silencing charm, it was just a habit to keep quiet when caught in a broom cupboard after a prank. Although they normally had better hiding spots than this.
âThis is a broom cupboard, Sirius,â began Remus in a whisper. âThis is the most cliched hiding place you could have chosen.â
âOh, Iâm sorry I didnât take you to the fucking Paris of hiding places, Remus,â Sirius hissed.
âThis is the stupidest hiding place,â Remus continued and Sirius just huffed in annoyance, looking back at the map. âListen, listen,â he put his hand over Siriusâ and pushed the map down. âI have to talk to you about last week.â
Remus wrapped an arm around his waist, pulling him in and Siriusâ eyes widened in surprise. He pressed their lips together sweetly, taking his time to hopefully show Sirius how much he missed him. Sirius rested his hands on Remusâ chest, fingertips running along the lining of his robes. He nipped at his lower lip and pulled back, breath shallow.
âYou kissed me,â Sirius breathed, eyes scanning Remusâ face in confusion.
âMm, how was it?â Remus asked with a smile, pushing Siriusâ hair back.
âIt felt a little bit rushed,â confessed Sirius with a narrowed gaze.
âI know,â whispered Remus solemnly. âI know, I know.â
âYouâve been distant,â Sirius murmured, leaning forward to peck his lips again. âI thought-â
âNo,â he interrupted. âNo, Iâve just been busy revising.â
âI donât want to keep hiding.â
âYes,â Remus sighed, putting a bit more distance between them. He assumed this meant they were finished. Sirius was finally sick of hiding and found someone he didnât have to hide with. Well, it was fun while it lasted.
âIâm mad for you, Moony,â Sirius confessed, cheeks reddened and warm. âI donât want to hide from our friends anymore. I want to tell people. Not everyone, justâ Prongs at least.â
Remus blinked. âWhat?â
âWhat?â Sirius echoed, brow furrowed.
âYou want to⌠tell Prongs?â
âYes?â Sirius replied, again with an air of duh.
âOkay,â Remus nodded. âYeah, you uhâ Merlin, thatâs not what I thought you were going to say.â
âWhat did you think I...?â
Remus shook his head. âCan we talk about this when weâre not hiding from Filch in a broom cupboard?â Sirius opened his mouth to protest, but Remus grabbed the map from his hands and began to plot an escape, now desperate to continue the conversation elsewhere. âLook, you make it to the stairs here and Iâll distract them, alright?â
He handed him back the map and Sirius gave it a tap, concealing the magic beneath. Remus opened the door and Sirius hurried off down the hall to the large doorway leading to the grand staircase. He turned around just once to toss a wink over his shoulder at Remus who rolled his eyes.
Remus looked up to see Slughorn had gone and just Filch was bumbling around the other end of the hall helplessly. He bit back a smile. He hugged the wall as he slipped further down the hallway. He took out his wand and cast a quick and temporary impediment jinx. Immediately, Filchâs movements slowed down as if he were wading through water or encased in jello. Before he could turn around to see who cast the jinx, Remus was off hurrying down the same way Sirius left, racing up the stairs after him.
[Remember that scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 1 where Peter shows up at Gwen's bedroom after fighting the Curt Connors? Well this is that, but it's wolfstar and Remus is back from a mission infiltrating the werewolf pack gone wrong. | first wizarding war | ao3]
Remus gasped as he landed on the ground in front of Siriusâ bedroom window. The pain from his chest shot through him from the impact and then dissipated to a dull ache. He just apparated in from another Order mission attempting to persuade some of Fenrirâs pack to join their side of the war. It was going okay until the full moon when Fenrir himself showed up and showed him and the rest of the pack what happens when they disobey their pack leader.
He could see Sirius laying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, twirling his wand idly in his hand as he listened to a record playing. Sirius had been living with James and Lily after Hogwarts and Remus was back at home. It just made more sense for the full moons to live outside of a big city and Dumbledore kept him busy enough with all the Order missions that he was barely home anyway. This put a strain on their relationship on top of Sirius being frustrated that he wasnât being utilized for as many missions as he thought he should. He often stayed in his bedroom moodily listening to records and scowling at the ceiling. Like he was tonight.
Remus tapped the glass with his head, hunched over needing the wall for support to keep him upright. Sirius shot up at the noise and waved him in, waving his wand to open the window.
âDid you miss your intended apparition point?â he joked as Remus stumbled in through the window. Taking in his hiss of pain and hunched over posture, Sirius shot up and rushed over to him. âMoony?â
Remus gasped as Sirius touched his chest, it had stopped bleeding already - thank you, wolf healing powers - but just barely. His hand pulled back stained with blood from touching his sweater. âYou should see the other guy,â he quipped with another wince and fell forward.
Sirius caught him and gently brought him to the bed, easing him back on the mattress. âMerlin, Remus,â he breathed as he raised his shirt to expose the wound. He had three large gashes across his abdomen - claw marks. He had other wounds from the full moon, too, but those were more manageable.
âSirius, do you want to come out for a drink?â James called from the hall. âStop moping around in there.â
Remus winced and grabbed Siriusâ arm. âDonât tell him Iâm here,â he rasped.
âWhy not?â Sirius hissed, hands still shaking as they hovered over Remusâ wounded torso.
âBecause heâll want me to go to St. Mungoâs.â
âYou should go to St. Mungoâs!â
âSirius, please,â he pleaded, squeezing his arm weakly. Sirius hesitated, huffed out an exasperated sigh, and headed to the door.
âNo, James, I do not want to go for a drink,â Sirius said curtly, just poking his head through the door. âI would like to wallow in solitude, if you please.â
âOh, come on, mate,â James whined. âLilyâs gone to get takeaway. Weâll put one of those dumb muggle movies on you like so much.â
âI doubt Evans wants me to crash your date,â argued Sirius. âAnd do you really want me cockblocking you?â
James choked a bit, blushing. âI- er, Iâm just worried about you, mate. Moony will be back soon. You donât have to suffer all by yourself. Weâre all worried about him.â
âIâm fine,â Sirius snapped, shutting the door in his face. Remus watched him hesitate, shift back and forth, before opening the door again. âIâm sorry, Prongs. I-I am fine though. I just want to be alone.â
A pause and then, âokay. Well, weâll be out there if you change your mind.â
Sirius muttered thanks and shut the door.
âYouâve missed me?â Remus rasped with a smile, leaning up on his elbows to look over at Sirius, who grunted.
âOf course I miss you when youâre away,â he snapped. âI was worried about you. I always worry about you.â He kneeled down in front of the bed and pulled out a crate of medicinal potions and salves, bandages and wraps, and put them on the bed beside Remus. âNow what the bloody hell happened to you?â
âIt was going well,â Remus hissed as the salve hit a particularly sour spot. Sirius rolled his eyes and handed him a potion to take the edge off. âIt was. Then at the full, Greyback showed up and-â
âDamnit, Moony,â Sirius whispered, casting a cleaning charm to get rid of some of the dried blood. Sirius was adept at healer practices from years of helping Remus after the full moons. He moved with practiced precision and ease.
âI know,â whispered Remus, falling back on the bed and closing his eyes tightly in pain.
âAnything broken? Anything wrong that I canât see?â asked Sirius.
âNo.â
âRemus.â
âEr, I think I twisted my ankle apparating here, but-â
âRemus!â
âBut itâs nearly healed on its own, I swear.â Remus cleared his throat and with his eyes still closed, blindly reached for Sirius. He grabbed his arm and weakly pulled at him until Sirius laid down beside him, a hand on either side of Remusâ face, hovering over his face. Remus opened his eyes and smiled weakly. He rasped, âthank you.â
Sirius hummed in disapproval, pressing their foreheads together and breathing in deeply. Remus immediately felt better just being near Sirius and he figured that was a mutual feeling. With the war raging on, just being around the people you love was the only thing they had most days. Something they took for granted for so long.
âDo you have to go again next month?â Sirius asked, eyes searching his face. His own expression fell when he realized the answer. Remus leaned up to kiss him, but Sirius turned his head away. âNo,â he murmured and his tone nearly broke Remusâ heart. âNo.â
âWhat?â
âEverytime we say goodbye nowadays, weâre saying it as if it's our last, as if we might not come home later,â Sirius began, looking down. His hands trailed down Remusâ arms. âJames, Lily, Mary, Marlene⌠you.â He took a shaky inhale and looked back up. âI canât handle that anymore. I canât- I donât want to do that anymore.â
Remus reached out and cradled Siriusâ head in his hands, brushing their noses together and leaning forward to press their lips together. âOkay,â he whispered when they parted. Siriusâ eyes were glistening with unshed tears and so were Remusâ. They breathed unsteadily together, the moment suspended in fragility.
âLetâs get out of here,â Remus murmured. âCome back to mine. Get out of the city for the night. My mum is at her sisterâs.â
Sirius kissed Remusâ palm and threaded their fingers together. âI donât think you should move much more than you already have,â he protested weakly, but the decision was made.
âIâll sidealong. You apparate,â he reasoned. âCâmon. Letâs go.â
âI should tell James and Lily-â
âSend a patronus,â Remus tutted, tucking a stray bit of hair behind Siriusâ ear and kissing his temple. âTheyâll hear you go anyway. Theyâll know where youâre off to. Come on.â
They both knew they couldnât completely forget the war or avoid it to the point where they no longer were impacted by it, but they desperately clung to any bit of normalcy. With another pause, Sirius finally nodded and helped Remus to his feet, holding his hand tightly as they apparated to the Welsh countryside.
