“Mr. Refreshing is your ex!?”
Oikawa’s mouth lay agape as you sat on the couch, head in your hands. It was the only position that you could manage to pull yourself into, as you were thoroughly embarrassed by the conversation that just took place.
“Yes, you could call him that,” you rolled your eyes at Oikawa’s outburst. Of course, Sugawara was friends with your *now* roommate. Your life was some kind of sick joke.
Oikawa wasn’t wrong with his nickname for your ex--you also found him quite refreshing, still. However, it still stung to remember how abruptly things ended with your lover. It was too soon to talk to him, picking up the phone was a mist-
“y/n? Are you listening to me? Helloooooooooo y/n!”
You broke out of your bleak thoughts about life and looked to see Oikawa leaning over your shrunken frame with a look that read confusion.
“y/n, why didn’t you tell me Sugawara was your ex? I’ve known that guy for forever, we go way back! I can’t believe that you two would have ever dated, much less have a semi-dramatic breakup,” Oikawa rambled, thinking about his memories of high school and the feeling of playing with all of his peers. He missed the feeling of being on top, being king.
“I didn’t think it mattered. I’ve been trying not to think about him recently, it just…hurts. Plus, I didn’t know that you guys were close. From what I witnessed at Fukurodani, Kurasano, and Aoba Josai weren’t exactly all ‘buddy-buddy’,” you teased. Oikawa shrugged.
“Well, Suga was pretty cool. Compared to Kagayama and Hinata,” you both shared a laugh at the expense of the two crows. They both now played in the major leagues, with Bokuto and Hinata both on the same team. It sounded like a major headache for anyone within a 10-meter radius.
Even though you sat here talking with Oikawa like everything was fine, you were shaken up. Why would he call? Did he miss you as much as you missed him? Did he think about it when he was away? Does he still love you? Do you still love him? You snapped out of your gloom, to see Oikawa rummaging through the boxes that you guys had left to unpack. He paused as he pulled out a faded t-shirt, one that was all too familiar.
“Now where in the FUCK did you find this?! I thought I got rid of this shit like 5 years ago!”
~
You changed your outfit like 8 times since you’ve gotten dressed. You wanted to look perfect, but also like you didn’t care. But also like you did because you still did. So much. It was no use, you looked and felt like shit in every single thing that you wore. You guessed that that’s what breakups are supposed to feel like as if every bone had been ripped out of you.
You agreed to meet Koushi in a small cafe that recently opened a few minutes away from your apartment. It was small but busy enough that it didn’t feel like it was just the two of you in an awkward room. Closure, it was all you wanted. You had a beautiful new apartment and a new amazing friend, and you wanted to begin a new page. One that didn’t involve heartbreak and stress.
You gave one last look at your outfit, deciding that nothing was going to satisfy you, and walked out of the room. Oikawa sat at the island that protruded from a beam (one of your favorite features of the apartment), looking intently at the laptop that lay before him. You strolled behind him, grabbing a quick glass of water to calm your bubbling nerves. Sneaking a quick peak at his screen, words flew out of your mouth before you even had a chance to think.
“You’re not thinking of quitting your job back in Argentina are you?”
Oikawa looked up from his screen, his face twisting in thought. He sighed before closing his laptop.
“No, no. Nothing like that, I was thinking about joining a club. I miss playing, and I know a lot of the people.” Oikawa explained. You had seen him looking at volleyball positions, which surprised you considering he was a part of the San Juan team.
“Oh, makes sense. I’m out of it today sorry.” You frowned at the brunette boy before you and downed the rest of the glass of water. Why were you so nervous? It was just Koushi after all, and the breakup wasn’t rough, yet something was tugging at your heart. Oikawa seemed to notice your internal conflict and raised a quizzical brow.
“Wanna talk about it? I’ve been told I have great ears for listening…well actually all of my body parts have been complimented now that I think about it,” Oikawa joked, but he was sincere. He didn’t exactly know what had occurred between you and Sugawara, but you were his friend now and he wanted to support you.
“Well,” you sighed. “I’m meeting with Sugawara today, and I can’t help but feel like I made a wrong decision to leave, but I don’t want to go back to my previous life. Y’know?” you vented, raking your hands through your hair.
Oikawa knew all right.
His decision to come back to Japan was a difficult one. Sure, it was impulsive, but that didn’t mean he didn’t think it through. Two weeks before he decided to leave, he happened to run into Hinata in Brazil. It was nice to see him, but the feeling of being ‘home’ was addicting. That night he booked a ticket to Japan and called his coach to set up a meeting, the rest is history. Coming back to it, Oikawa nodded, listening to your thoughts.
“He was a great guy too, and ugh. Where did this all go wrong.” you bury your head in your hands, feeling more stressed than before. Oikawa pouted, unsure of what to do. He had never had to comfort a girl like this before, usually it was a girlfriend or someone HE was breaking up with.
“Do you want a hug or something? Anything? I’ll do it,” he frowned, hating the way you looked. You had only known each other for two weeks, but the bond was immediate and he didn’t want his brand new roomie having a breakdown. You just nodded at him, needed the embrace of someone. Usually, it would be Iwaizumi, but Oikawa could be a cheap replacement…for now.
Oikawa was surprisingly a good hugger, his cologne only adding to the experience. You stayed in his embrace for a few seconds, allowing yourself a couple of deep breaths before you had to face the music. You took another breath and let go, hyping yourself up.
“Alright. Okay. I can do this, and everything will be okay afterward!” Cheering yourself on, you grabbed your bag and headed out the door. The elevator ride did little to calm your nerves, but luckily you had time to yourself as you walked.
You didn’t even know how to greet him anymore. There wouldn’t be a hug, or would there? Would you order what you always order? Would he? All of the thoughts swarming through your head came to an abrupt halt as you approached the store and saw him sitting by the window, his hair shining with the sun. You took a deep breath and walked in, it was happening.
The door jingled slightly as you entered the cafe, the aroma of coffee and baked goods wafted up, bathing you in it. At the sound, Koushi peeked his head around the corner and at the sight of your face, he sighed. You gave him a small smile and walked over to the table where he sat, placing your bag on your chair.
“Hi, Koushi,” you finally say, surprised the words didn’t get caught in your throat. Sugawara didn’t say anything and just looked at you, as if you were a ghost that he wasn’t sure was real or not. You couldn’t read his expression, was he upset? He had every right to be, yet, you couldn’t feel any animosity from him. Finally, he sighed and rushed forward to give you a hug, his hands finding the back of your head and back, holding you as if you could slip through his fingers at any moment.
“I’m sorry if this is weird, me hugging you, but…let me indulge for a moment.” he breathed out in a tone that broke your heart into a billion pieces. You frowned into the hug, finally reaching up to pat his back, unsure of what to do in this position. He still smelled the same, which wasn’t a huge feat, as it had only been a month, but still. After a few minutes, you broke apart and sat down at the table.
You weren’t sure what to say or what to do. After all, people rarely meet back up with their ex in circumstances like this. Looking up to meet his eyes, you could see the same feeling in his. The actual breakup was casual, you both agreeing with little argument, but yet it felt worse than being dumped.
“How was your trip?” you finally utter, trying to make conversation before the inevitable occurs.
“It was uh, not great really. I wanted to call you every day, but I thought you would still be there when I got back and we could talk but…” Sugawara trailed off, his voice becoming tighter with every word. It was clear that he was taking it the same way you were.
You frowned. Moving out wasn’t the plan, obviously, but Oikawa made an offer you couldn’t refuse. You refrained from mentioning Oikawa for now, as it was hardly the right time.
“Oh. I see.” you weren’t sure how to respond to his answer, not expecting the shift to occur so soon. “I…god, I don’t even know how to go about this,” you admit, putting your face in your hands. This was going worse than you thought. However, Sugawara laughed, confusing you.
“I’m so glad you said that because I don’t either,” he admitted, tilting his head to look at you through your fingers. You wished there had been a manual for this thing.
“I don’t want to lose you forever, though. I think we’ve grown tired and need to see life through a different lens, which isn’t a bad thing and I wish we could have had this conversation before…well y’know,” Sugawara laughed lightly as he spoke, his clear tone cutting right through your anxiety. You finally lifted your head, giving him a lopsided smile.
“How is it possible we think so alike?” you joked, referring to your feelings as well. He smiled and laughed. It was like seeing an old friend after a long time.
“I think that we both were looking for something at the end, but I can’t tell you exactly what. I love you so much Koushi that it hurts to think of us at night and I know I ruined-” Your sentence was cut off by Sugawara grabbing your hand suddenly.
“You didn’t ruin anything y/n. We are both adults here, and we both agreed on something. Sure, we both fought it at points but we reached a decision. I called you here not to make you feel bad or anything, but to tell you that I want to be a part of your life y/n. You have been my best friend for 3 years, and if we end this by being platonic, that would be my biggest dream.” he poured out, smoothing his thumb over your hand. You smiled sadly, feeling tears rush to your eyes at his genuine love for your being.
“I would love that Suga, but could we take it slow? I’m still feeling like the ex-girlfriend who moved out right now, and I’m sure you have stuff going on,” you admit. Sugawara just nods and smiles.
“Whatever happens, I have a feeling that we’ll find each other,” he adds, before looking at something behind you.
“Perhaps now that we’ve had this discussion, we could share a scone and talk about what’s changed?” he suggested, much to your pleasure.
An hour had passed by since the end of ‘that’ conversation, and now you were nibbling on a raspberry scone as Sugawara narrated the trip he had taken with his students.
“So yeah, that’s how I dragged Midori out of a tree at 3 in the morning.” he huffed, placing his hands on the table. You smiled, his frustrations about being a teacher always being amusing.
“Anyways, onto you. I’m sorry for asking, but it worries me. Are you staying somewhere safe?” he questioned. You paused, realizing the conversation you were about to have.
“Uh yeah, about that. I just moved into an apartment not far from here,” you say, avoiding the obvious issue with the apartment. Sugawara smiles.
“That’s great! I would love to see it when you have time,” you gulp. You can’t keep it a secret forever, and you knew he wouldn’t be upset, but it would be awkward to explain how you moved in with another man less than a month after breaking up.
“Oh, yeah sure! W-whenever you’re free!” you give him a fake smile, internally panicking. Sugawara checked his watch quickly before turning back to face you.
“Well, actually, I have time today, if that’s okay?” he said casually, flashing his bright smile. Your heart sank to your stomach, the truth rearing its ugly head. You just nodded and mentally prepared for the storm that was about to happen.
“Great! We can walk over there right now,” you say through gritted teeth, wondering how you were going to explain it to him.
Once in the elevator of the building, you prepared for the worst. However, when you approached your door, you could hear the sounds of talking along with Mario Kart. Furrowing your eyebrows, you unlocked your door. When it swung open, you were greeted by all of the Seijoh alumni along with Bokuto and Akaashi.
“What in the hell?” you mutter, no one realizing that you and Sugawara had walked in. Matsukawa, Hanamaki, Bokuto, and Oikawa were engaged in a competitive game, while Akaashi and Iwaizumi silently talked near the island.
Shortly after you entered, Iwaizumi broke eye contact with Akaashi and locked eyes with you, then Sugawara. He quietly excused himself before walking up to you.
“Uh, we didn’t expect you back for a while.” He muttered, looking over at Sugawara. Sure, he was the one who told Suga to meet up with you, but what the hell were you both doing back at your apartment?
You crinkled your face in confusion, but Hajime gave you a look that said ‘I’ll explain later’, so you dropped it.
“I’m showing Koushi my apartment, I didn’t expect you guys to be here though,” you say with a tight smile, trying not to let something slip.
“Oh, did you all get this apartment together? I was hoping you would move in with someone you knew-” Suga was cut off by the groans and cheers from the game ending. Soon enough, your trio was discovered by the rest. Bokuto was the first to notice, seeing that Akaashi was now alone. He followed the trail to you, Iwaizumi, and Sugawara.
“Hey, hey! Is that Sugawara over there!?” he yelled, bounding over to give Suga a tight hug. You shook your head, he would never change. Akaashi quickly pulled Bokuto off of him, silently reminding him that he was your ex.
“Oh, right,” he muttered, quickly moving to be by you. Iwaizumi turned back to Sugawara.
“Sorry, you got cut off, but no we don’t live here, it's just y/n and-”
“Mr. Refreshing himself! Wow, I didn’t expect to see you after our little phone call!” Oikawa waltzed over, sparing you a side glance of confusion. Sugawara and Oikawa exchanged a handshake before the entire group migrated over to the common area.
You began to panic internally, the truth getting closer with every minute. Oikawa and Sugawara continued to talk as the rest of the group mingled. You turned pulling Iwaizumi aside.
“Haji, we have an issue, the bathroom now.” you pulled the buff man behind you and into the bathroom. Once the door was locked, you immediately began to explain the entire afternoon. Iwaizumi listened silently, the only feedback being a slight nod here and there.
“So yeah, and now he doesn’t know I moved in with some random guy I hadn’t met before last month.” You breathe out. Iwaizumi just raises an eyebrow before clearing his throat.
“It’s going to be fine, the circumstances were…odd and he already knows the guy. If he wants to be in your life still, he’ll understand.” you nod and thank him for his advice. When you exit, Sugawara is now talking to Akaashi and Oikawa in a small circle, reminiscing about high school and whatnot.
Strolling up behind them, you give Oikawa’s shirt a small tug, a warning for what was about to occur.
“Ah, it seems the pretty setters are reunited!” you joke, slipping into the conversation alongside Iwaizumi.
“Oh, y/n! I was just talking to these two about the day you picked us up from the airport, the day that changed my life forever!” Oikawa said dramatically. You laugh, trying to think of a way to let the news slip in casually.
“Hajime was so mad,” you giggle, recalling the way Iwaizumi pouted on the way home. Oikawa nodded.
“It’s okay, Iwa. We still love you and you’re welcome in our abode any time.” Oikawa teased, not realizing he just let it slip for you. Sugawara paused slightly, his eyebrows turning down. You froze, locking eyes with Oikawa, who had just realized what he had done.
“Uh..”
“Wait, you’re the roommate?!” Sugawara exclaimed, turning towards Oikawa. The brunette just laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I was waiting to tell you, I know it’s kind of weird and…” you rambled, not wanting the good state you were in to crumble. Sugawara just laughed.
“I cannot wait for the stories I’ll be hearing!” Suga continued to laugh, making Iwaizumi break out into a grin. You and Oikawa froze for a moment, looking at each other confused.
“W-what’s that supposed to mean?” you stutter out, not understanding Sugawara for the first time in your life. Sugawara stifles his laughter before looking at Iwaizumi.
“You two are the duo that will bring down the entire nation.” Iwaizumi declared in a joking manner, causing you to roll your eyes. You and Oikawa huffed out simultaneously, causing the rest of the group to laugh.
The rest of the evening went by smoothly, even Sugawara stayed for a while catching up with the others. However, you eventually called it quits around 11 p.m, kicking Mattsun out before he ate the rest of the food you owned.
“Drive safe, see you later!” you called out, closing your door behind him. You turned around to see Oikawa cleaning lightly, picking up the glasses that were used earlier. Moving to clean the dishes, Oikawa motions for you to sit down.
“I’ll do them, tell me about your little meeting with Suga today,” he grinned, leaning over the counter with a sly look in his eyes. You shrugged, causing him to pout.
“It was…normal? He had the same opinion that I do, and while we aren’t getting back together, I’m grateful to know he still wants me to be a part of his life,” you smile softly, the outcome better than you anticipated.
“See! There was nothing to be afraid of, I told ya so!” Oikawa stuck out his tongue, teasing you about how you stressed earlier. You roll your eyes, letting him win on this one.
“Oh! And I forgot to mention, but my old friend Kuroo asked if he could come to stay with us while his apartment was getting renovated! You might know him he’s from-” You cut Oikawa off, nodding your head.
“Nekoma, I’m aware of Kuroo. But why wouldn’t he stay with Kenma or something?”
“He’s at some convention in the United States right now I guess.”
warnings: like one curse word? uh this is long so 😐

For two weeks, you learned that Tooru Oikawa was very very loud. Both of you were currently staying at Iwaizumi’s while the lease was being finalized. Thankfully, you and Oikawa both made a decent amount of money, so you both could afford a bit more expensive apartment. You remembered the qualifications that Oikawa had listed off the day after you decided to move in together.
Three days earlier
“But y/n! I’m going to be home a lot, so wouldn’t it be better to have a larger living space?” Oikawa looked up at you with a teasing look in his eyes.
“Why would we need a large, expensive may I add, apartment? I’ll be home a lot too, but It’s not like we’ll be throwing parties or cooking-”
“Oh I plan on cooking,” Oikawa exclaimed while grabbing your hands
“You know how to cook?”
“You don't?”
Fast forward a couple of days, and here you were, moving into a large, expensive apartment. Trying to drown out Oikawa and Mattsun’s loud laughter, you moved into the kitchen to go over things.
Living with someone other than a significant other was hard work, no wonder why your parents didn’t want you to get a roommate off of campus in university. Sighing, you closed your laptop and got up to make some tea.
Green tea was the one thing drink that didn’t remind you of someone. Hajime was coffee, strong and dependable. Kaori reminded you of iced coffee, like Hajime but she was sweet and cool. And of course, peach tea reminded you of him. He was calm, refreshing, and sweet.
Your thoughts were shattered when a voice pierced through your consciousness. Oikawa.
“You seem to be interested in that teabag, something wrong?” He moved to your left side and bent down to make eye contact. Flustered, you snapped out of your depressing trance.
“Yeah! I'm just thinking about people and drinks,” you laughed the concern off and tried to reassure him.
“Drinks? Do you want me to invite people here?” Oikawa seemed confused. Why would you suddenly want to drink?
You waved your hands frantically, trying to stop Oikawa from doing anything.
“No! No, I was thinking about how drinks sometimes remind me of people,” you laughed as Oikawa cocked his head to the right, looking like a lost puppy.
“Oh, I see! So then, what do I remind you of?” the confused face on Oikawa’s face melted into one of cockiness and teasing. Nonetheless, you answered his question.
“Hm, strawberry lemonade.”
Iwaizumi arrived back home a few hours after the teabag incident and walked into a very intense Mario Kart tournament.
“Come on y/n~ let me win once, please.” Matsukawa groaned out as you beat him for the fifth time that night. Oikawa simply chuckled before getting up and greeting Iwaizumi.
“Iwa! When did you get here?”
“He obviously just did, idiot,” You rolled off of the couch before standing up to meet the two in the kitchen. Iwaizumi motioned his head towards your open laptop that had the details of the apartment displayed. As if he was stressed, he just sat down and sighed.
He couldn’t shake that feeling. Why did Oikawa come back? He was doing perfectly fine in Argentina, he had won against his team during the Olympics even. So why the hell was he here? How did you end up moving in with him? He tried summing it up as the shock of the breakup clouding your decisions, but as he stared at you and Oikawa picking out a rug, he felt as though that wasn’t it.
You were different.
~
Hajime trailed behind you and Oikawa as you gleefully ran into the elevator, excited about finally moving in. It took a few days to move in, but with all of your and Oikawa’s friends helping, things went smoothly.
“Oh just wait Iwa! We set up a little corner for you to stand in when we have friends over!” Oikawa teased Iwaizumi while you sent a short reply to Kaori. She and her girlfriend got into a little argument, so you were offering a piece of advice, although you felt as though you weren’t in the position to give advice anymore.
“Hey.” Iwaizumi poked your shoulder and gave you a look that was full of concern. He looked worried about something.
“What’s up?” You asked the taller male, who was looking down at your phone.
“Are you texting S-” Your eyes widened as the name of your ex-boyfriend threatened to slip past his lips.
“No! It was just...Kaori. I was offering advice,” you gave Iwaizumi an awkward smile as he apologized under his breath. Meanwhile, Oikawa was staring at you with curiosity. As he was opening his mouth to speak, he was cut off by the sound of the elevator dinging.
“Hajime! Let’s go!” you laughed while pulling the dark-haired man out of the elevator and towards your new home.
The apartment was large, to say the least, but it was perfect for you and Oikawa’s antics. The living room was spacious, and per request, there was a large kitchen for Oikawa to cook whatever he wanted. The two of you had your own rooms, of course. The third room was a study for you to work in, and for Oikawa to do whatever Oikawa wanted to do. Downstairs, there was a gym (which Oikawa enjoyed, although he would train elsewhere), as well as a small bakery across the street. Things were perfect.
Iwaizumi left after thirty minutes, claiming “I can’t stand to be around the both of you”, which led to Oikawa calling a near-by pizza place.
“I thought you liked to cook?” you teased the tall male, but he simply laughed.
“My dearest y/n, how do you expect me to cook with only carrots and cream cheese?” He laughed, motioning towards the fridge that had yet to be filled. Rolling your eyes, you lay down on the soft couch and breathed out. Oikawa moved your legs so that they rested on his lap before closing his eyes. Looking at your conflicted face, Oikawa tapped your legs, trying to draw your attention.”
“You seem to be lost in thought a lot, does this happen frequently?” you giggled quietly at his joke but sat up.
“No, I’m just..thinking that things are too easy right now. It seems like everything a week ago was so hard, and that my life was ending,” you giggled as Oikawa widened his eyes in concern.
“So why did you even move out of your previous apartment anyways? Did something happen with your landlord or something?” Oikawa questioned as he moved to grab something to drink. You sighed and shook your head.
“No, my boyfriend broke up with me,” you laughed as you watched Oikawa choke on his water. He set down the glass and rushed over to you, scanning your face for any signs of hurt. In the years that he had lived in Argentina, he had his fair share of relationships, and he knew that people were typically sensitive. But somehow, there was nothing there but worry.
“Well! I'm sure that you don't need him anyway, he was probably a shitty guy anyways so-”
“Actually, he was pretty amazing. There wasn’t anything to hate,” Oikawa closed his mouth in thought and was about to reply with a snarky comment, but the door rang. As Oikawa ran off to greet the delivery man, you just stared at the back of his head.
Was this the right choice?
Across town, a man dragged his things into the house. He had been gone for the last three weeks, and all he wanted was to lay down with his girlfr-.
Wait.
The light-haired man sat down on the couch and remembered the words that were exchanged before he left.
| Three weeks prior |
“....”
“y/n, I just don’t know what you want me to say-”
“Just go, okay?”
| Present time |
The man dug through his coat pockets before looking at his lock screen, not wanting to change it. He swiped up and looked for the one person that would always answer; you.
Calling your number, he stared at the one thing that was left out on the counter.
Peach tea.
~
You and Oikawa were arguing over what to watch as a “celebratory moving day movie”, as Oikawa called it.
“y/n, I have watched this movie every time that I’ve moved, trust me,” Oikawa whined as you held the remote out of his reach, making sure he wouldn’t put it on.
“Why not Howl’s Moving Castle? When moving in with a new person, you need a new movie to watch!” you pouted. Oikawa huffed and crossed his arms.
“I-I’ve never seen it,” he admitted under his breath. You widened your eyes and jumped on top of him.
“What do you mean you’ve never watched it?! Are you jo-” you were suddenly cut off by your phone ringing.
Although you changed his contact name and photo, the ringtone was personalized. Your blood ran cold as you picked up the phone. You shouldn’t answer, but you owed him after leaving abruptly. Covering Oikawa’s mouth, you picked up the phone.
“Hi,” you answered, punching yourself mentally for being so awkward. Oikawa mocked you as you sent him a glare.
“Oh god y/n, where are you? Are you staying at Kaori’s? I’m so sorry, I’m on my way-” you cut him off before he could go bang on your best friend’s door.
“Koushi, I'm not-”
“Koushi?! As in Sugawara Koushi?” Oikawa exclaimed with excitement. Your eyes widened as you felt your face go red. On the other end of the line, Sugawara stopped pacing around the living room and fell into a state of confusion as a familiar voice rang out from the other end.
“Oikawa? You’re back?” You could feel yourself sinking into a state of despair as Oikawa laughed and took the phone from you.
“Mr. Refreshing! Yeah, I'm back here while I’m on...break. How have you been? I haven’t seen you since-”
“I remember,” you could hear Sugawara’s laugh flow from the phone, and it made your heart hurt. You motioned for Oikawa to hurry up and give you the phone back, but he simply brushed you off and gave you the remote.
“I’ve been uh, not well actually. Which is why I was calling y/n,” Sugawara sighed. Oikawa glanced over at you and waggled his eyebrows. You rolled your eyes, humored by the man’s idiocy.
“Ah, I see! Anyways, I’ll let you get back to your call. I’ll have y/n give me your number later so we can catch up!”
“I’m not sure-” Oikawa handed you the phone, not understanding the context behind the phone call. You glared at him as he cheerfully watched the beginning of the film.
“I’m sorry about that, he’s uhm, intrusive,” you apologized to Sugawara, but he just brushed it off.
“It’s fine, I knew him from high school. It doesn’t seem like now is a good time to talk though, can we discuss things later? I’ll buy you coffee or dinner, whatever you want okay?”
“Yeah that sounds fine, I’ll talk to-”
“Are you okay y/n?” he asked hesitantly, knowing damn well that he had hurt you.
“I will be,” you ended the call, and immediately pinched Oikawa. He jumped and sent you a glare.
“Hey what was that for? I didn’t do anything!” you just rolled your eyes.
“I hardly think taking my phone to talk to my ex-boyfriend counts as “nothing”, Oikawa,” you huffed. His eyes widened before standing before you in disbelief.
“Mr. Refreshing is your ex?!”
facts:
- Sugawara is y/n’s ex ;)
- The former couple’s breakup was clean, but Sugawara didn’t mean to actually break up with y/n
a/n: SO. i’ve been gone for like a month, what’s up :) this chapter is quite longer than the rest, so i apologize, but it’s also an apology for being gone for like 45 days lmao. I wanted to say this from the beginning, but Kuroo’s chapters will always be a bit shorter, because his “route” is an extra one, and the main story was meant to follow oikawa. HOWEVER, i loved his character too much. His chapter will be out tomorrow loves <3.

Breakups were supposed to be hard, it’s a well-known fact, but you couldn’t help but cry out of frustration as you looked at all the boxes you had packed in a rush. Even though your friends had offered to come help with moving out of the apartment you had shared with your ex-boyfriend, you refused. After all, you were stubborn, not even a breakup could change that. However, your plan on doing everything yourself was soon abandoned as you whipped out your phone, cringing at the lock screen you had yet to change.
Pressing the top number, you only waited for a few seconds before the other end picked up. You never had to wait with him.
“Hajime, I know I said-” he cut you off before you could finish your sentence.
“Yeah yeah, I’ll be right over with food.”
You smiled at the fact that he always knew what to do and what to say.
_
You met Iwaizumi Hajime just before leaving for the United States in order to study abroad. In contrast to your frantic and nervous behavior before flying, he was calm and put-together. By some miracle, the two of you were sat together, and you learned you were going to the same college in California. He told you how he went to Aoba Johsai, and you told him how you attended Fukurodani.
Over the course of a year, you and Hajime became best friends and saw each other at their worst. You would wear each other’s high school apparel and eventually would share an apartment in your last year before returning to Japan. Although others misunderstood the relationship between you two, it was defined as a familial bond. He was your older brother, and you were his younger sister.

Back to the present day, Hajime sat in your living room as you began to sort through your clothes. Snorting at a familiar old teal shirt, he laughed.
“What are you laughing at?” you scowled at the man who was sprawled across your sofa.
“Nothing, it’s just that I can’t believe you still have that! It’s not even mine,” he clutched his stomach, seeming like he was remembering something. You just narrowed your eyes before throwing the fabric at his face.
“Well if it’s not yours, whose is it?” you questioned the brunette boy. He sat up before opening his phone up to show you a picture of four boys at graduation. You had seen the picture before, it was framed in his bedroom. He pointed to a taller boy who had wavy hair and was holding up two fingers behind Hajime’s head.
“Oh, Oikawa right?” you asked Hajime, as he had told you about his high school friends before. He nodded before saying that the shirt belonged to him.
“I’m not even sure why I have it, especially because it wouldn’t fit me,” he questioned to himself. He set down the food container that was still on his lap and sat down next to you in order to help pack more efficiently. He seemed to be lost in thought before turning to you.
“Where are you going to stay after this?” you set down the skirt you were holding in your hands before letting out a sigh.
“I don't know Haji. My sister said I could stay with her, but she lives in Kyoto, and that’s too far from everything.”
“I would offer you to stay with me, but Mattsun brings too many people over. It would just be uncomfortable for the both of us.” you laughed as he rambled on about his roommate’s antics.
Issei Matsukawa, another high school friend, was Iwaizumi’s roommate. You had met him many times, along with Hanamaki, another friend. The three of them made up ¾ of the Iwaizumi’s lock screen. The only person you hadn’t met yet was Oikawa, as he was living in Argentina as a professional volleyball player. Hajime was extremely proud of him, even though he wouldn’t admit it to his face.
“Maybe I should call up Kaori and see if she will let me crash at her-”
Your sentence was cut short as the Godzilla theme began to play from Iwaizumi’s pocket. He took a look at who was calling before excusing himself to the kitchen, although it was no use. The next words that fell from his lips were very loud and said with disbelief.
“You’re coming home?!”

Two weeks later, you were sitting in Bokuto and Akaashi’s shared apartment browsing through the apartment listings when Iwaizumi called you.
“Haji, what’s up?” your ears were met with an unfamiliar voice that was definitely not Iwaizumi’s.
“Haji?! Is that what she calls you Iwa?” you could hear Iwaizumi sighing on the other end, as Akaashi entered the room with tea and a glass of wine. You thanked him quietly before hearing an argument break out on the other side of the phone.
“Hajime? Everything good over there?” you asked as you sipped the warm tea. It was quite good, and you made a note to thank Akaashi later.
“Good? Yeah, no. Could you come and pick us up from the airport?” you could sense the frustration in his voice, but decided not to ask questions right now. Instead, you hopped in your car and drove towards the Tokyo airport.
Upon your arrival, you saw Iwaizumi standing near a taller male who had light brown hair. You immediately recognized him as the man from Iwaizumi’s lock screen, but wasn’t he in Argentina? You strolled up to the pair and raised an eyebrow at Iwaizumi’s angry demeanor. He just sighed and pulled the man and his bags towards your car. You just took his silence as a sign to just drive.
On the way back to Iwaizumi’s apartment you learned three important things about Oikawa.
He was very smart and handsome
He was back in Japan for a year at most
He easily was going to become one of your closest friends
His behavior towards you was light and cheerful, and you had no trouble keeping a conversation but Iwaizumi seemed to be lost in thought as you drove closer to his home. Oikawa sat in the backseat, telling you all kinds of stories, including the one where he decided to come home and take a break.
When you pulled up to Iwaizumi’s shared apartment, you watched as Hanamaki and Matsukawa gave the boy a large hug before asking about his life in Argentina. It was almost worrisome as you watched Iwaizumi hold back from rejoicing with the others, but he eventually gave in.

After a few drinks with the four boys, the conversation turned to where Oikawa would be staying while he was in Japan. He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck before setting down the drink he had been holding for a good portion of the night. Turns out, he stopped drinking heavily after a night in Rio that he refused to talk about.
“Ah, well I don't currently have a place,” he gave a short laugh before Hanamaki spouted out that you didn’t either. You and Iwaizumi both slapped his head as Oikawa and Mattsun laughed.
“Is that so!” You turned as Oikawa placed his fingers on his chin, seeming like he was in deep thought. He then acted like he had discovered lighting.
“I got it, y/n be my roommate!” he grabbed your hands and begged you to stay with him, even though you had barely known each other for 6 hours. Iwaizumi interjected right away.
“No, absolutely not.” He crossed his arms and began to have to stare at Oikawa intensely before laughs broke from the tall boy’s lips. You hated to admit it, but you were very desperate, and shot Iwaizumi a pleading look. He eventually broke, much to everyone’s delight.
“That settles it! y/n tomorrow we go apartment shopping!”
As you and Oikawa talked over plans, and how things like rent would be handled, Iwaizumi stared at his friend in confusion. One thing had been bothering him since the phone call he received two weeks ago.
Oikawa Tooru did not take breaks. Ever.
a/n: y/n is very naive, i think we should establish this before we move one. second of all, y/n and her ex seemed to just fall out of love, but y/n DOES still harbor feelings for the mysterious man
summary: after breaking up with your boyfriend of three years, you move out of your apartment as your best friend’s high school friend comes back to Japan for a “break”.
a/n: this prologue is kinda vague, because im not mentioning who the ex is right away, but things will get better I promise lmao. enjoy <3

Things didn’t end messy, nothing ever ended messily between you and ___. It did hurt, however, as you really thought the two of you would make it through anything. No matter what, you promised to yourself that the growing distance between the two of you was just in your head and that it wouldn’t come to an end. You wished that the perfect world that was in your head could become reality, but it wouldn’t.
It happened at the dinner table.
___ looked at you, and as if you could read each other’s minds, you both sighed. With the same eyes that previously looked at each other with love, you both stared at each other in sadness.
The false time of prosperity that lived in your head was now gone as you both retreated to your shared bedroom and began going over things that the other would like to keep. He said you could keep the apartment. You refused, as it was his as well. It wouldn’t be fair.
Within three hours of him leaving, you were a mess and now had to figure out how to pack everything before he returned home. You would be okay, right?
Telling your friends was the hard part, but there was one person who made it easy to forget about his comforting eyes and his soap that was still in the bathroom because he knew you liked to use it sometimes.
a/n: i tried to upload this sooo much earlier but tumblr decided not to comply and then i cried about it, but anyways :,) enjoy <3
